+STOP! Read Before You Start!
Always use the proper equipment when you make soap. Making cold process soap is a fun rewarding activity but needs proper equipment that is safe to use.
You don’t need to buy brand new equipment, look for your supplies at second hand stores and yard sales. You’ll be able to build up a nice set of supplies that way.

+Considerations
www.latherandlotions.com
Before you begin to purchase your supplies there are a few things you should consider.
1. You should never use anything that has or is made with aluminum, it reacts with lye.
2. What size batches will you be making? Are you going to be making a few bars for family and friends or are you starting a business?
3. How much storage room will you have for your supplies? Do you live in a small apartment with limited space or do you have a large space where you can store more?
4. You will need to keep your soap supplies separate from your kitchen supplies, you can’t use your soap supplies for both.

+ Soap Making
Equipment
We highly recommend that you use equipment that is only used for soap making. Soap making substances can be harmful if ingested. Not much equipment is needed and some of it can be purchased at second hand stores or yard sales.
You will be working with essential oils, fragrance oils and sodium hydroxide, these substances may absorb into your equipment so that’s why we recommend not using any of it for household use. Please do not use anything with aluminum as it reacts with the sodium hydroxide (lye). For your pots don’t use tin, iron, cast iron or Teflon. For stirring we only use stainless steel, plastic, glass and silicone. Don’t use wooden spoons they will shred!

+A Note On Stainless Steel Cold Process Soap Equipment
SOAP NOTEGive yourself time to gather the right soap supplies
for your needs. If you plan on selling your soap you
should buy the best supplies you can afford, it is an
investmentin your business. Talk to your accountant about
start up costs.

+Why I Like Working With Stainless SteelI know that stainless steel costs more than plastic supplies, but if you find stainless steel equipment at a good price you should consider buying it. Here are a few reasons why. Stainless steel cleans up easier. Essential oils and fragrance oils can melt plastics.
Stainless steel has a high resistance to corrosion. Stainless Steel will retain heat and cold longer. Stainless steel has a longer life cycle than most plastics.

+HAVING SAID THAT
Use those supplies that you can afford for your needs. Consider if this a hobby or a business (how often will
you use your supplies) If you are making soap and you’re in it for the long
run….get the best supplies you can afford.
+How to Clean Up Cold Process Soap Safety
www.latherandlotions.com
SOAP NOTEYou can clean up quickly and without incident if you
do it properly. After you clean up, store your soap
making supplies in a place separate from other household
items. Having a separate cabinet or bin works great
for this.
+Cleaning Up
Be sure keep all of your safety gear on while cleaning up.
After you’ve finished use disposable towels to wipe any spills. Place them in the bag you’ve put aside for cleaning up.
Next wipe off any excess soap from your bowls and utensils. (don’t put excess soap into your drain it can clog your pipes)
Wash your smaller utensils and tools first using an oil cutting dish cleaner.
Next wash the larger bowls one at a time.
Double check for all soap and lye spills.
Then wash the gloves you have on with soap and water.
Carefully remove your eye goggles and wash them.
