1. Purpose
This specification document outlines requirements for Supplier labels with a two dimensional (2D) DataMatrix barcode for Bourns, Inc.
The DataMatrix 2D barcode is a black and white, graphical image that stores information both horizontally and vertically. A 1D barcode stores information horizontally only, not vertically.
The DataMatrix 2D barcode allows more efficient data capture, greater data accuracy, and compact data storage on labels. The DataMatrix 2D barcode provides more efficient data capture by providing all necessary information with a single scan of the barcode. The DataMatrix 2D barcode has greater data accuracy because it contains embedded error correction codes which allow scanning of the 2D barcodes despite minor smudges and smears. The DataMatrix 2D barcode provides compact data storage because it stores more data in a smaller space than a 1D barcode. A 1D barcode can store hundreds of alphanumeric characters. A 2D barcode can store thousands of alphanumeric characters.
2. Scope
This specification document for 2D supplier barcode labels is applicable from all Bourns, Inc. suppliers and sub-contractors.
3. Qualifying Suppliers
A qualifying supplier produces labels with a DataMatrix 2D barcode which includes the following criteria: EC 200 error correction, ISO 8859-1 data encoding, minimum 300 DPI resolution, and minimum 13.16 mils size.
Bourns, Inc., or your local Bourns purchasing contact, should be notified in advance if a supplier cannot produce 2D barcodes that include these criteria.

4. Barcode Organization
It is recommended that the DataMatrix 2D barcode include the following criteria:
DataMatrix Barcode DataMatrix is a 2D barcode with a black and white graphical image. When compared to a 1D barcode, the DataMatrix 2D barcode stores more information in a smaller space, requires a single scan for processing, includes error correction codes, and easily handles data encodings of various lengths. Table 1, on page 4-5 discusses the content of the DataMatrix 2D barcode.
The DataMatrix 2D barcode can be printed as a square or rectangle. It is recommended that the DataMatrix 2D barcode have a square shape printed by a thermal transfer printer.
Error Correction: ECC 200 ECC 200 uses Reed-Solomon error correction. According to the Electronics Components Industry Association (ECIA) Reed-Solomon error correction allows a DataMatrix 2D barcode to be scanned even if 25% of the barcode is damaged.
Data Encoding: ISO 8859-1 ISO 8859-1 is the data encoding standard used to store data values on the DataMatrix 2D barcode.
EIA standards EIA standards are used for all electronic component and systems on a global basis.

Version 4: 6/23/2016
Minimum Resolution: 200 DPI A minimum 200 DPI (dots per inch) resolution is recommended for the DataMatrix 2D barcode to be scannable.
Minimum Size: 13.16 Mils A minimum bar size of 15.0 mm by 15.0 mm is recommended for the DataMatrix 2D barcode to be scannable.
A DataMatrix 2D barcode with a bar size smaller than 15.0 mm by 15.0 mm may not be scannable.
Figure 1, below, shows the minimum bar size for the DataMatrix 2D barcode.
Figure 1. DataMatrix 2D barcode with bar size 15.0 mm by 15.0 mm.
Thermal Transfer Printing Thermal transfer printing is recommended for DataMatrix 2D barcode printing. This technology allows maximum readability and scannability of the 2D barcode.

Barcode content should be encoded using the ISO 8859-1 encoding standard
6. Barcode Scan Requirements
When scanned, the DataMatrix 2D barcode scan should adhere to the following criteria:
1. data identifier values must appear before the actual data values 2. all data values should be separated by a plus sign(+) 3. no blanks or line feeds are allowed between data values 4. if no data values are assigned, the data identifier should be included 5. no spaces are included in the 2D barcode scan results
7. Label Text content (Human Readable) summary
It is recommended the label text be black letters on a white background with a minimum point size of 13.

Version 4: 06/23/2016
14. Labeling It is recommended that the labels follow this criteria:
Label Size
Label sizes are described using the standard format of Height by Width (H x W). Example labels have been rotated left 90 degrees to show label upright. When printing, the label will print on standard 4in by 6in thermal transfer labels.
The requested label size is: Height = 152 millimeters, Width = 102 millimeters for
the Packing Slip, Box, and Mixed Load labels. Height = 50.8 millimeters, Width =
102 millimeters for the intermediate label.
The label size should be large enough for accurate scanning of the DataMatrix 2D Barcode.
Any variations in label size should be submitted to Bourns, Inc. for approval prior to implementation.
Label Placement
The placement position of the Supplier labels should allow the DataMatrix 2D barcode to be clearly visible and easily scanned.
The label should be small enough to fit one surface of a box or container without overlap onto another surface. Note: Please refer to the Global Labelling Power Point to get a detailed explanation of placement, and uses for all Supplier labels.
