special, indirect, consequential or compensatory damages, directly or indirectly resulting from the negligent conduct or

other acts or omissions of any individual certified by AWS.

In issuing and making this standard available, AWS is neither undertaking to render professional or other services for or

on behalf of any person or entity, nor is AWS undertaking to perform duty owed by any person or entity to someone

else. Employers and other persons utilizing the services individuals certified by AWS are responsible for determining

the qualifications, competence, and ability of those individuals.

This standard may be superseded by the issuance of new editions. Users should ensure that they have the latest edition.

Publication of this standard does not authorize infringement of any patent or trade name. Users of this standard accept

any and all liabilities for infringement of any patent or trade name items. AWS disclaims liability for the infringement of

any patent or product trade name resulting from the use of this standard.

Finally, the American Welding Society does not monitor or enforce compliance with this standard, nor does it have the

Foreword

(This Foreword is not a part of the AWS EG2.0:2015 Supplement, SENSE Level I – Welder Training Performance Testing Procedures but is included only for information.)

The AWS Schools Excelling through National Skill Standards Education (SENSE) program began in 1993 with the award of a grant by the U.S. Department of Education to develop a series of standards and a program for the recognition of welders based on welding performance testing and practical knowledge tests. The development of this National Skill Standard involved the participation of the welding industry through a survey designed to arrive at a consensus of welder skills and competencies required to fill the need for qualified welders in a variety of industries. The result of this survey was an occupational task analysis that formed the basis of the SENSE standards for the training of welders. AWS EG2.0, Guide for the Training of Welding Personnel: Level I-Entry Welder is intended to provide a skill standard defining the minimum welder training requirements for a Level I-Entry Welder. The recommended requirements in the AWS EG2.0 guide are based on AWS QC10: Specification for the Qualification and Certification of Level I—Entry Welder. AWS QC 10 defines the compulsory and optional modules required for either partial or full completion registration for AWS SENSE Training Certified Entry Welder credential. These credentials are registered in AWS’s SENSE Training Certified Database and are available for employer verification of training competencies. The new guideline supplement, AWS EG2.0 Supplement, SENSE Level I - Welder Training Performance Testing Procedures was prepared to improve training as prior editions of EG2.0 did not provide recommended welding procedure specifications (welding parameters) for performance tests. Improved welder training can be achieved by using and teaching application of AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPSs) that are directly relevant to the SENSE Level I-Entry Welder performance qualification tests. For each Level I workmanship and welder performance qualification tests, this supplement provides a recommended Welder Performance Qualification Technique Sheet and accompanying AWS SWPS standard data (based on SWPS availability for each performance test application). SENSE performance qualification tests are part of the completion requirements to be registered as an AWS SENSE Training Certified Entry Welder. These procedures are for welder training / educational use only and shall not be used by employers for welder performance qualification tests nor for production welding. Comments and suggestions for the improvement of this specification are welcome. They should be sent to the Secretary, AWS Education Committee, American Welding Society, 8669 NW 36 St., #130, Miami, Florida 33166.

Supplement SENSE Level I – Welder Training Performance Testing Procedures

1. General Provisions 1.1 Scope. EG2.0, Guide for the Training of Welding Personnel Level 1 – Entry Welder establishes a

skill standard by defining the recommended minimum welder training requirements for a Level I—Entry Welder in accordance with AWS QC10, Specification for Qualification and Certification of Level I—Entry Welder. AWS EG2.0 Supplement, SENSE Level I - Welder Training Performance Testing Procedures was prepared to improve training as prior editions of EG2.0 did not provide recommended welding procedure specifications (welding parameters) for performance tests. Use of this Guide is voluntary. Training organizations desiring to register a trainee as an AWS SENSE Training Certified Entry Welder, or to record completion of modules or units, should consider this guideline supplement to better prepare trainees to the requirements AWS QC10.

Requirements forApplication of SWPSs

Scope. The data to support this Standard WeldingProcedure Specification (SWPS) have been derivedfrom the above listed Procedure QualificationRecords (PQRs) which were reviewed and validatedunder the auspices of the Welding Research Coun-cil. This SWPS is not valid using conditions andvariables outside the ranges listed. The AmericanWelding Society considers that this SWPS presentsinformation for producing an acceptable weld usingthe conditions and variables listed. The user needs asignificant knowledge of welding and accepts fullresponsibility for the performance of the weld and forproviding the engineering capability, qualified per-sonnel, and proper equipment to implement thisSWPS.

Application. This SWPS is to be used only aspermitted by the applicable fabrication document[such as code, specification, or contract document(s)].The fabrication document should specify the engi-neering requirements such as design, need for heattreatment, fabricating tolerances, quality control, andexamination and tests applicable to the end product.

User’s Responsibility. An SWPS does not replaceor substitute for fabrication codes, specifications, contract requirements, or capability and judgment on

the part of the user. An SWPS is to be used only aspermitted by the applicable fabrication code, specifi-cation, or contract document.

The ability to produce production welds having prop-erties suitable for the application depends upon sup-plementing the SWPS with appropriate performancequalification tests and sound engineering judgment. The user is responsible for the quality and perfor-mance of the final product in accordance with theprovisions of the fabrication document.

Supplementary Instructions. To adapt this SWPSto a specific application, a user may issue supple-mentary instructions. Such instructions may consistof tighter fit-up tolerances, higher minimum preheattemperature, or any other instructions necessary toproduce a weldment that meets the requirements ofthe fabrication document. These instructions shallnot be less restrictive than provided in the SWPS.

Safety. Safety precautions shall conform to the latestedition of ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding,Cutting, andAllied Processes, published by the American WeldingSociety.

This specification may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. The specification doesnot purport to address all of the safety problemsassociated with its use. It is the responsibility of theuser to establish appropriate safety and health prac-tices. The user should determine the applicability ofany regulatory limitations prior to use.

Standard Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

Permission to reproduce for intra-company use only is granted by the American Welding Society

Requirements for Applicationof Standard WPSs

Scope. The data to support this Standard WeldingProcedure Specification (WPS) have been derivedfrom the above listed Procedure Qualification Records(PQRs) which were reviewed and validated underthe auspices of the Welding Research Council. ThisStandard WPS is not valid using conditions andvariables outside the ranges listed. The AmericanWelding Society considers that this Standard WPSpresents information for producing an acceptableweld using the conditions and variables listed. Theuser needs a significant knowledge of welding andaccepts full responsibility for the performance of theweld and for providing the engineering capability, qualified personnel, and proper equipment to imple-ment this Standard Welding Procedure Specification.

Application. This Standard WPS is to be usedonly as permitted by the applicable fabrication doc-ument [such as code, specification, or contractdocument(s)]. The fabrication document shouldspecify the engineering requirements such as de-sign, need for heat treatment, fabricating toleranc-es, quality control, and examination and testsapplicable to the end product.

User’s Responsibility. A Standard WPS does notreplace or substitute for fabrication codes, specifica-tions, contract requirements, or capability and judg-

ment on the part of the user. A Standard WPS is tobe used only as permitted by the applicable fabrica-tion code, specification, or contract document.

The ability to produce production welds havingproperties suitable for the application depends uponsupplementing the Standard WPS with appropriateperformance qualification tests and sound engineer-ing judgement. The user is responsible for the quali-ty and performance of the final product in accordancewith the provisions of the fabrication document.

Supplementary Instructions. To adapt this Stan-dard WPS to a specific application, a user mayissue supplementary instructions. Such instructionsmay consist of tighter fit-up tolerances, higherminimum preheat temperature or any other instruc-tions necessary to produce a weldment that meetsthe requirements of the fabrication document. Theseinstructions shall not be less restrictive than pro-vided in the Standard WPS.

Safety. Safety precautions shall conform to the latestedition of ANSI/ASC Z49.1, Safety in Welding andCutting, published by the American Welding Society.

This specification may involve hazardous mate-rials, operations, and equipment. The specificationdoes not purport to address all of the safety prob-lems associated with its use. It is the responsibility ofthe user to establish appropriate safety and healthpractices. The user should determine the applica-bility of any regulatory limitations prior to use.
