WELCOMEWelcome to the 15th edition of the Fraser Yachts Superyacht Gallery, your exclusive guide to some of the best superyachts for sale and charter around the world, along with an insight into the latest market trends. 2014 was a very positive year for the yachting industry with new build sales and construction projects at their highest levels in Europe since the global financial crisis began, while brokerage sales improved once again and were steady worldwide. Buyer confidence in the U.S. and global markets boosted this trend and led to clients ready to purchase yachts which allowed the year to end on a high note for the industry as a whole. This is good news for everyone and I’m delighted to say that Fraser Yachts continues to be The Superyacht Experts and lead this growth, with our brokers selling more superyachts than any other brokerage company for the fifth year in a row. 2015 started off very strong with Fraser Yachts having 6 closings in the first month, including the sale of the 57m CALIXE, the 43m FOUR WISHES and the 39m SERENITY J. Four of these yachts were sold in in-house deals where Fraser Yachts represented both the buyer and seller. Our team of experts continues to attract new and exciting listings with the additions of the new ultra sleek and modern 66m OKTO and 50m MAYRA, the sophisticated 51m ALDABRA, and the stunning 50m ARIANNA to our sales fleet. Fraser Yachts boasts an impressive fleet of yachts for sale across the board proving that we are the experts when it comes to listing, marketing and selling yachts.

Charter bookings are already strong for 2015 with many yachts already booked for July and August and an increased number of bookings for June and September as well. The winter and holiday season are also already receiving bookings well in advance which is a very positive sign. We have welcomed several new yachts to our charter fleet, including the luxurious 57m LADY SARA designed for ultimate entertainment and relaxation; the historic 49m sailing yacht XARIFA recently refitted leaving her in top condition for charter guests to enjoy this summer; and the state-of-the-art 42m MI VIDA available for charter in the West Mediterranean. Most recently, 2015 brought about the launch of VF Yachts, a partnership between Fraser Yachts and V.Delta which will provide Project Management Services to the superyacht industry. You can read more about this new venture on page 8. Plus we have opened two new offices in Phuket and Kuala Trengganu in Malaysia as part of our expansion in Asia. BROKERAGEwhat trends have you noticed in the new construction market in the past year?

The global order book remains strong with more than 300 yachts above 40m currently under construction. Sailing yachts account for 14% of these projects which is in line with the existing fleet structure. Not surprisingly, the 40-60m range accounts for the majority of yachts under construction (65%), however it is the 70-100m and 100m+ segment which are experiencing the greatest growth rate.

There are currently 142 yachts between 70-100m, yet there are 48 new yachts of this size being built, which will increase the fleet by over one third. In the 100m+ yacht size there are currently 34 yachts in the fleet and 25 new yachts being built (an increase of 74%). Having said all this, the number of yachts delivered in 2014 once again exceeded the number of contracts signed and there are still good opportunities for new orders to be placed with high quality shipyards.

how did 2014 fare for the superyacht brokerage market as a whole? what is the outlook for 2015 and how do you see it impacting the superyacht market?

The last quarter of 2014 was particularly strong for the US and we believe that the strengthening US economy and the improving US dollar will have a positive impact on the industry as a whole, we are already seeing this in the charter market and we believe it will start to impact on the Sales and Purchase and New Build market too. However, we are conscious that the current geopolitical uncertainty in some regions may have a negative impact on the Sales and Purchase market.

In terms of global wealth, North America and Europe still dominate the global UHNW landscape as the two regions with the largest UHNW population and wealth. Growth in the United States rebounded ahead of expectations after the first quarter of 2014 and growth is expected to exceed 3% in 2015-2016.

2014 overall was a strong year for the brokerage industry with the number of yachts sold surpassing that of 2013. One notable point about the sales of 2014 was that there were 8 yachts sold with a final asking price in excess of 60 million EUR, whereas in 2013 there were no yachts of this value sold. This had an impact on the total last asking price of the top 10 brokerage yachts sold in 2014 which amounted to 916 million EUR. Over the past three years we have seen that Q2 and Q4 have consistently been the strongest quarters in terms of the number of yachts sold. Q2 of 2014 was significantly strong and saw almost 150 yachts being sold and was the highest selling quarter since the global financial crisis. 2014 was also the first year where more boats were sold than came onto the market since the global financial crisis began. A decrease of yachts available for sale should eventually have a positive effect on prices and help them stabilise. We also noticed a decrease in the difference between the last asking price and the actual selling price, indicating that owners are now setting more realistic prices when they bring their yachts onto the market and buyers are ready to spend again.

do you think the charter industry in 2015 will be as strong as it was in 2014?

Yes I do, in fact at present the indications are that it will be even stronger than last year. For several years now the charter market has been gradually improving as the economy has recovered. The 2014/2015 Caribbean charter season was considerably stronger than previous years and we are seeing yachts in the Mediterranean book up earlier, particularly in the good quality 60m+ size range.

We are also receiving enquiries and bookings for the 2015/2016 winter holiday season. If clients are looking to book charters in high season, the sooner they begin looking, the more selection they will have. Overall, all boats seem to be booking earlier with some clients already looking at booking charters for the 2017 season.

In addition, we are seeing many charter clients looking for longer charters. The normal charter used to be for seven days; now there are many enquiries and charters booked for 10 – 21 days. We have also seen more clients booking charters in the normally quieter months of June and September. These factors are expanding the charter season and increasing the number of weeks booked.

have there been any significant changes in regulations this year?

The recent amendments to the Spanish regulations now make it much easier to obtain a Spanish Charter License for EU registered yachts. We are seeing a number of those yachts applying for this license. This has always been a popular destination and surely the yachts with this new license will have many charters booked.

Croatia, too, has an obtainable charter license which allows yachts to start charters within the country. Prior to this, the yachts would often start the charter in neighbouring countries such as Montenegro. With that said, many charters still start in VAT free Montenegro which also boasts new marinas for superyachts.

In other areas, French Polynesia has reduced their 12% tax to 5%. This is a significant reduction and an attractive perk to those clients who are considering chartering in this region. As always, charterers are advised to use an experienced and certified broker who has access to all the latest information, so that they can relax and enjoy their charter in confidence.
