It is with great sadness that the family of Ernestine R. Avelar, age 84, announce her passing in the early morning of Friday, Sept. 25, 2020, surrounded by loving family and after a long-time battle with dementia. Ernestine (Tina), was born Sept. 30, 1935 in Tempe, AZ to Trinidad Corral and Juan Ruiz who later moved from Scottsdale to Sonora where she, her brothers and

OBITUARYErnestine R. Avelar

sisters shared wonderful memories growing up in their quaint but bustling town. She moved to Ray/Kearny and married Raul C. Avelar, and they grew their family to six children. Later in life she became one of the first women to become a member of the local Elks Lodge where she was a member for 24 years. Tina took pride in cooking and cleaning for her lodge and for her church, the Infant Jesus of Prague, to which she donated both time and tithes. She was welcomed into Heaven by her mother, father, brothers Albert and Jimmy, sisters Erma, Bobbie, Josie and Talita, son Patrick and granddaughter Elicia. Tina will be greatly missed and forever remembered by her surviving children: Ruly (Vicki) Avelar, Cindy (Marco) Robles, Jackie (Leon) Abeyta, Anna (Matt) Vestal and J.T. (Susie) Avelar; 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless family and friends. Funeral services will be closed to immediate family only due to the pandemic.

Superior, Ariz., Sept. 22, 2020 - Resolution Copper announced today that the company has awarded more than $185,000 in grants to five local school districts for the upcoming school year. Along with supplying personal protective equipment (PPE) for teachers and students, the funds will ensure that up to 600 students in the Superior, Globe, Hayden, Miami and Ray school districts will receive technology to support distance learning. “These students are the future of our community, and we want to do whatever we can to make sure they feel safe, engaged and connected as they return to school this fall, especially during these challenging times,” said Andrew Lye, Resolution Copper Project Director.

Resolution Copper fulfills back-to-school needs for hundreds of local students and teachers

“In order to reopen school remotely, the Superior Unified School District had to purchase over 340 iPads and other devices. In addition, we purchased 100 internet hotspots for our Superior students who did not have access to the internet at home,” said Superintendent Stephen Estatico. “Resolution Copper once again supported our schools and our students by providing us additional funding to purchase the technology needed to begin our remote-learning program. We are truly grateful for their continued support. Thank you Resolution Copper!” The grants were designed to enable each school district to use the funds for their specific needs, whether it was additional PPE, tablets and other devices, or expanded internet connectivity and data plans to facilitate virtual learning. “Without the iPads, the district would not have had the option to offer distance learning which is life saver during the COVID 19 pandemic. The grant provided our students with 21st century learning tools to make distance learning possible,” said Jeff Gregorich, Hayden Winkelman Unified School District Superintendent. “I am especially grateful to have the support of Rio Tinto and I look forward to continuing our partnership to support the education of all students in the Copper Corridor.” These donations are part of Resolution Copper’s previously announced commitment to donate $780,000 in 2020 to assist organizations throughout the broader community during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. As

part of that commitment, the company has provided support to community organizations with a focus on four key areas: education, health and wellbeing, vulnerable populations, and economic resiliency. Since April, funds from Resolution Copper have also helped supply PPE to local frontline workers, provided meals to families, sustained local small businesses, offered scholarships to local students, supported domestic violence shelters, and ensured childcare for essential workers and emergency first responders. Since 2016, the company has invested more than $2.2 million in over 280 local initiatives around Superior, Arizona, spanning education, environment, community development, and arts and culture. In 2019, Resolution Copper committed to a four-year $1.2 million agreement with the Superior Unified School District, including providing support for STEM and robotics programs at local schools. It has also awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships to over 200 local students since 2002.About Resolution CopperThe Resolution Copper project is operated by Resolution Copper Mining, which is a limited liability company owned 55 percent by Resolution Copper Company (a Rio Tinto PLC subsidiary) and 45 percent by BHP Copper Inc. (a BHP PLC subsidiary).

To recoup some of the losses from the cancellation of the event the club is hosting a raffle. Tickets will be sold from Sept. 19, 2020 – Oct. 29, 2020, winners will be drawn via live Facebook feed on Oct. 31, 2020. Copper Area News is committed to providing our readers with as much information as possible. We post a daily update on our Facebook page with the total positive COVID-19 Data. This graph shows the daily counts of positive cases for the past week as of press time on Sept. 28, 2020. There are a few points we would like our readers to consider when following this data. 1. This will continue to be a rolling total of positive cases. It does not refl ect recoveries or deaths. The Arizona Department of Health Services does not break out this data.2. If you see a reduction in numbers from day to day it is most likely due to a data entry error or mis-coding of a zip code (at the state level).3. This is all zip code based data; most of our zip codes include unincorporated areas. There is no way to track exactly which areas each of the positive cases are. Example, Kearny and Winkelman each have small communities in their zip code that are not in the Town’s incorporated boundaries.4. If you live in Gila County, please follow the Gila County Health and Emergency Management, Facebook. They have maintained their data on recoveries and current positive cases. 5. You can follow other data such as ICU bed use, Ventilator use and hospital capacity online: https://bit.ly/3inh28O Working together, we can slow the spread of the virus across the Copper Corridor. Wear a mask in public, remain physically distant (6 feet apart or more), practice good hygiene (wash your hands frequently, sanitize high touch areas) and stay home if you are not feeling well.

The Town of Superior announced late last week that it has entered into negotiations to purchase the historic Old Superior High School from Elijah Cardon. There will be a discussion of the one-year option agreement at a meeting of the Superior Town Council on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to submit a comment for or against the purchase may submit it before the meeting at [email protected]. In 2019 the Town signed an agreement with RCM (Resolution Copper Mining) to provide $2 million dollars to build a multigenerational center for the Town of Superior. The Town committed to raising the additional $2 million needed for this project by selling town-owned properties, such as the Belmont Hotel and the one remaining site in the Superior Industrial Park,, and also by securing grants and loans through the USDA and other entities. The Multi-Gen facility will consolidate town functions, moving the library, senior center, and Town Hall into the same building and allowing them to share administrative staff and resources. The historic building will also provide space for the Superior Alumni to add to the history of the

new construction in this period, which would have meant fewer amenities in the finished building. The Old High School can provide all of the amenities that are unattainable in this current construction environment and finishes not available within the current budget. the building will be less expensive to renovate, and at over 50,000 square feet, it provides existing usable space for all of the intended functions and will allow for future growth. Proposed re-use renovations would include ADA access to the main building, adding A/C to the balance of the space, installing information technology infrastructure, and renovation of the commercial kitchen. Over the next year, the Town will have to complete several studies and reports to qualify for federal funding, including a Preliminary Architectural Report, a Financial Feasibility Study, and EPA Phase One and Phase Two Reports. If all of these actions are completed by the end of the year, the Town could receive funding from RCM and USDA by the spring of 2021. The Town would like to thank Elijah Cardon for taking such excellent care of the building over the years and for making it available to the Town to facilitate this important project. We also would like to thank Resolution Copper Mining for providing matching funding and USDA

The Town of Superior Police Department

Superior Police Department unveils new badge

Superior Police Department’s new badge design.

has a new badge. You may have seen officers wearing the new badge which has incorporated into the design landmarks known around Superior. Prior to the new badge, the department never had just one official badge. There was no uniformity – officers were all wearing different badges left over from previous administrations. Detective David Lester was the lead in getting the new badge made. The idea for the badge came from Sgt. Shackelford. “It was a fantastic idea from Sgt. Shackelford, a tribute to the town and people of Superior” said Detective Lester. “Everyone in the department contributed to the color, sizing and lettering on the badge. It was a good team building exercise as well. It was good for morale.” After the design was selected, they got a tattoo artist to do the rendering of the Superior landmarks and the badge. These landmarks are the old smelter smokestack, Picket Post Mountain and the Queen Creek Bridge. The new badge has received a nice response from the townspeople. A photo of the badge was posted on the Superior

Police Department Facebook page. There have been 153 likes and 80 comments posted so far. Comments have been positive and the design of the badge received many compliments. The new badge reflects a new department

under Chief Frank Alanis. “It is a new start for us, holding ourselves to a higher standard,” said Lester. “We are very proud of our department, what we are doing and love the direction it is going. We will be the best small agency in the state!”

Superior Detective David Lester displays a box of new badges that are yet to be assigned to an officer.
