The students then work together to write a story about KUBO’s adventures as a superhero. The story should include KUBO’s superhero name, superpowers, and elements of the obstacle course as locations in the story. BEFOREHAND Students should understand how to use KUBO and the Coding TagTiles ® . Students should have an introduction to story elements (setting, conflict, theme, and character). RESOURCES • 1 KUBO robot per pair, fully charged • 1 set of KUBO Coding TagTiles • Classroom items that could be used to create elements of the obstacle course for KUBO (paper tubes, cups, tape dispensers, model cars, pipe cleaners, building blocks, construction paper) Superhero Obstacle Course (PRIMARY FOCUS: ELA) For students from approximately 4 to 8 years old.

S U M M A R Y

Each group of students changes KUBO into a superhero by creating a costume from the blank costume printout and creates an obstacle course for KUBO to complete. The students then work together to write a story about KUBO’s adventures as a superhero. The story should include KUBO’s superhero name, superpowers, and elements of the obstacle course as locations in the story.

• Social Studies: Students add elements of their school, town, or neighborhood into the obstacle course.

• Art: Students add additional background elements to their obstacle course to set the stage for their story.

E X T E N S I O N A C T I V I T I E S

• Student groups rotate to try out the different obstacle courses.

• The student groups share their KUBO superhero with the class and talk about the elements in their obstacle course.

S O L U T I O N E X A M P L E

Superhero details: Super KUBO’s costume consists of a personalised costume with an eye mask, and KUBO’s superpower is x-ray vision.

Obstacle course ideas: Students could incorporate materials easily found in the classroom. Students could also use the blank activity map to make an obstacle course. Certain conditions could be given to the groups, such as the course must include three turns (left and right). Students could have KUBO go past a car, wait in front of a tree to help a cat that is stuck at the top, and so on.
