What are the business drivers?
– Need to be more agile– Need to reduce costs – Rely less on IT support– Be more flexible – BYOD– Increase staff motivation &
retention
And businesses are demanding more:
Serco Internal
Why now?
– Technology on the rise
– Growth of mobile and tablet– Improved mobile and landline connectivity
– Reduced costs in mobile and landline tariffs
Serco Internal
Broadband – Landline technologies

The thing about copper….
Fibre can run 40Km at 10,000Mbps and not loose signal strength

Speeds
• Speed is measured in Mbps
• Often shown as Mb or Mbps
• Megabits per second
• (not megabytes MB – 8 bits to a Byte)

Upload speeds
• ADSL - 0.5Mbps
• ADSL 2 - 1Mbps
• Satellite – 1 – 6 Mbps
• Cosmic office download 10Mbps….. Upload 0.8Mbps
• Important to you? Tailor packages - offer upload speeds on 100Mb package are up to 30Mb or higher.
Serco Internal
Why do you need good upload speeds?
• Filesharing - A fast broadband upload speed will reduce the time it takes to share files,
• Remote server connection - if you work from home using a remote network, your work files will transfer quicker with good upload speeds at your office. Guide to downloading for more information
• Video conferencing and webinars – if you are hosting either, then your upload speeds need to be really strong. Check them before hosting.
• Social networking - If you use sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitpic to share photos and videos, you'll be familiar with the long wait between finding the right photos and having them appear on your profile, especially if you're uploading lots of pictures at once. A fast broadband upload speed will improve this dramatically.

Data allowance
• Typically
• ADSL line 10GB monthly data allowance
• Fibre 40GB monthly data allowance
• 1 film downloaded = 1 GB
• 100 emails = 3MB (without attachments)
• 100 photos = 500 MB (roughly)
Serco Internal
Contention
• Contention ratio: is the maximum number of other people you have to share the connection infrastructure with.
• So a contention ratio of 50:1 would mean that the maximum number of people you could be sharing the connection with at anytime is 49 other people.
• If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then your download speed could drop hugely, in reality though this doesn't happen and you can enjoy much faster download speeds

– Web chat, increases conversion (10 -25% Scottevest) – Video (increases spend and time on site(M&S)
•
Serco Internal
• Convert new sales, retain accounts in far reaching places without visiting, Skype, Google Hangouts means less time
• Webinars can deliver interactive, continuous sales, demonstrations and how to support sessions (uploads) Hospitals now use it for consultant review and analysis (better example?)
Serco Internal
4. Improved reliability, security and DR
• Cloud as a backup to PCs /server/data
• Levels of redundancy in place
• Security of data – not held locally on laptops
• Less reliance on local infrastructure and fire, floods, theft
Serco Internal
• Case study – Consultancy in Devon
• 7 FTE – in 4 in Devon - 3 in Manchester
• Apple Mac based
• Little IT knowledge
• Don’t want a central server
• Like to be flexible
Serco Internal
They implemented
• File sharing – Dropbox for teams
• CRM system – Daylite

What are the barriers to take up?
• Knowledge and fear
• Low IT confidence
• Inability to understand packages
• No knowledge of what they currently have
• And technical language
– 5MB, 25Mbps, 3G, 4G, modems, Firewalls,
• Lack of time and evidence to invest in change
• Unaware that have to signup to new broadband package

I need faster business broadband
1. Do you know what your speed is? Check at different times of the day – at your location http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest
2. Are you on the right package? Often a cheap package, low bandwidth, residential package? High contention rates.
3. Find out what your exchange is currently enabled to? http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping_full
4. Is it worth switching - what packages are available to you? http://www.moneysupermarket.com/broadband/business-broadband-deals/
5. What’s coming to your area? http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when

In the mean time…
• Think about
– Avoiding peak time use– Extension cables to router – place router directly into the first
socket– Check.. out of date router (get replacement free), cheap router,
web browser and hardware– Check no-one is running background tasks (iradio, icloud
syncing etc)– Clear your web browser’s cache – Change Password on router– Channel change on router– Replace Micro filters & order a broadband accelerator
