The team with possession has four attempts, called ‘downs’, in which to advance the ball at least 10 yards towards their opponent’s end zone. Confusingly, if a team succeeds in going 10 yards, this is called a ‘first down’. If a team fails to get a ‘first down’ after four downs, the other side takes possession.
DOWNS
When play begins again (except at the beginning of a half and after someone has scored), the offensive players line up opposite the defensive players on the ‘line of scrimmage’, an imaginary line that extends from where the football is placed to both sides of the field.
LINE OF SCRIMMAGE
At the line of scrimmage one player on the offence, the ‘centre’, passes the ball backwards between his legs to another teammate, usually the ‘quarterback’ to begin play. This pass is called a ‘snap’. Only once the snap has been played can the offence and defence pass over the line of scrimmage.
SNAP
A ‘fumble’ occurs when a player loses possession of the ball while running with it or being tackled.FUMBLE
This happens when a forward pass fails. It hits the ground before a player gains possession.INCOMPLETE PASS

road to the final
As we prepare for the biggest sporting event in America to hit our screens, we look back on the two finalists and how they made it to Super Bowl XLIX.
It all started back in September. The Seahawks, fresh off of winning Super Bowl XLVIII, were predicted to be the first team since the Patriots back in 04/05, to win back-to-back Super Bowls. A mediocre start to the season for them – only 3 wins from 6. Many thought the pressure of knowing they were favorites, was getting to them. Any doubters were soon proved wrong though. A string of convincing
results was to follow. Seahawks would go on to win 9 out of their next 10 games to finish off the regular season top of NFC West. No other team in the NFL finished the season stronger than. Next up were
the Panthers in the divisional play-offs. The Carolina Panthers had the worst record out of all the teams that made it into the play-offs, so a predicted, convincing win for the Seahawks was inevitable. It was surprisingly close for a half, with the Panthers keeping up with the Seahawks tactics. But any hope
was short-lived in the 3rd quarter, where quarterback Russell Wilson started opening up the defense like a training match, throwing for three scores and completing 15 of 22 passes. Final score: 31-17 to Seattle. The final hurdle before they reached the final came in the shape of the Green Bay Packers. And a mighty hurdle it came to be. The Seahawks looked out by halftime, with the Packers 16-0 up. They were sloppy, giving away 5 turnovers. A huge rally was mounted by Seattle, who took the lead with two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Green Bay forced overtime with
a field goal late on, but it was Seattle who had the last say of the game. Wilson hit Jermaine Kearse for the game-winning touchdown in the final minutes. The Seahawks had won the NFC Conference
Championships, 28-22.
The New England Patriots had a solid season, although starting and ending with losses to The Miami Dolphins and The Buffalo Bills respectively. It would be the first time they lost their opening
game since 2003. Two more slip-ups throughout the season were the only negatives New England had to face, ending the regular season with a record of 12-4 and going on a 7-game winning streak in the process. They were to go through to the AFC Divisional round as 1st seed. They faced 6th seed Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional play-offs, which turned out to be their toughest game of the season so far. They trailed three times throughout the game – twice by 14 points – but still managed
to come back in great fashion to advance through. Brady had a great game; passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns, completing 8 out of 9 passes in the fourth quarter and hitting LaFell for a touchdown with 5 minutes left. Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco thought he would snatch the game at the death, but his pass was intercepted in the end zone with 1:39 left. The Patriots would see the game out 35-31. They advanced to the AFC Conference championships and played their best game of the season to dispatch the Indianapolis Colts 45-7. They completely shut down Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck, who completed just 12 out of 33 passes, compared to Brady, who completed 23 out of 35. A hugely convincing win to seal the AFC Conference Championships. This was the 8th time The Patriots had
made it to the Super Bowl.
So two very different Conference championships, but the same result - wins for Seattle and New England. The Seahawks have recent Super Bowl victory. The Patriots have impressive Super Bowl
history. Both have what it takes to win. Both know what it’s like to lose. Both will put everything on the line for this game. Strap yourselves in for the most anticipated final for years – Super Bowl XLIX.
