rial If you mess with my GREEN, I turn RED

I commute daily on the R72 and on a recent journey I was, as is not unusual on the R72, stuck behind a truck owned by a national retailer. I really don’t mind cruising at 80km/hour, as I’m all for more efficient fuel consumption - I am forever grateful to the friend who explained how much fuel you save if you travel con-stantly at lower rpm’s.

And besides I’ve hung up my tag as ‘Mommy Rush’ – the title my older boys gave me many years ago when they explored what my title would be if I was a

Mr Men or a Little Miss book – I will add, this was uttered as we flew around a corner in a bright yellow Beetle on the way to school and work.

What’s more, my decision to live here

in paradise is motivated largely by the quality of the quieter lifestyle on offer and enjoying the unspoilt beauty of our roadside scenery definite-ly qualifies as a criteria! If you beg to differ, I suggest you head over to a neighbouring city and try find the scenery while you commute to and from work daily. For example, what was wine lands in the Western Cape are fast becoming back to back housing estates with shopping malls interspersed and the Cape Town--Somerset-West stretch of highway, like the Johannes-burg-Pretoria stretch, offers almost continues development. Even East Lon-don is no longer the quieter small city I once knew, and the deserted East Coast Resorts route I so loved to travel late at night or over a weekend, after getting off shift, is now simply a fond memory from my days as journalist at the Daily Dispatch. Nowadays it too offers continuously built up areas and it takes forever before you begin to experience the Wild Coast from a roadside perspective.

But back to my R72 commuting, as I travel what grabs my attention and solicit my anger – as incidents of utter sense of helplessness usually does for us mere mortals – is when the plastic bottle, or fast food outlet packag-ing comes flying past my windscreen. I’m not worried about personal ve-hicle damage but the littering really gets my goat, as they say. Where were these folks when the rest of us were taught to Zap it in a Zibbi blik … Time to bring back the campaign? Why do I feel helpless, well it happens too fast to capture the culprit on camera, besides I’m driving and shouldn’t be handling a smart phone or camera while I’m driving (right folks?) and as it is not always a well-known retailer’s truck who offends it could well just be an arbitrary motorist, so I have scant recourse to report such an offender.

On one such an occasion then, my youngest son, aged 9 at the time,

watched my reaction, and tapped his older brother on the shoul-der and said: “Wow, when you mess with mommy’s GREEN she really turns RED”.

You’ll see more editorials along this line in future as the well-being of our Earth and sustainable use of her splendour is a mat-ter dear to me, and a matter that should be a priority on every individual and household’s agenda. We only have one earth, treat her wisely and with respect for that is the legacy you leave behind for your children and their children to come. Maya Lloyd

P.S. I have, since my return to the Eastern Cape in April 2013, developed an additional R72-issue, the fact that motorists (regardless of race, gender or age category) do not appear to

understand the road-markings and this time I don’t feel helpless as we can publish images and explanations of the rules and hopefully educate a few souls on the way and in so-doing keep our roads safer.

PoRT ALFRED resident Kim Fouché has been selling Annique Health and Beauty Products for the better part of seven years. She was introduced to the products by her sister in Cape Town, who upon hearing of her infant niece’s allergy to bath products had sent Kim a few items from the Annique Baby range. Kim was subsequently delighted to see the rash fade from her daughter’s skin, and became curious about other uses for Rooibos extracts.

Interestingly, her story parallels that of Annique’s founder, Annique Theron, who in 1971 discovered the soothing power of Rooibos infused milk formula when quieting a colicky baby. Theron published many books on her findings, including The Rooibos Baby, and The Primitive Lifestyle. Her self -titled company, Annique, now does extensive farming in the Western Cape, and uses mainly the petiole, or top part of the leaves, which contain the

most potent nutrition and are considered of a higher quality.

Annique’s skin care lines are updated every three years to integrate scientific breakthroughs. one such addition is Aquavital, a moisture complex containing 16

different proteins which revitalize tired skin. Their products target all ages, gender and ethnicities and include a Men’s range, Makeup, and Baby products. A few examples of Annique’s skin care regimes are The Spa range, reasonably priced body oils and creams for dehydrated skin; oily and problem areas are combated by the Synergy line; and uneven pigmentation is lessened by the Essense collection. The Body Expert range is also significant in reducing cellulite and draining the lymph nodes of toxins.

Not only do they concentrate on skin care, Annique also stocks an extensive array of perfumes, natural slimming aids and vitamins. The Resque line relies on the strong scents of wintergreen, peppermint oil and menthol to ease muscular pains, headaches and sinusitis and also offers a cream to prevent blistering and bruising. According to Kim, Annique’s wide variety of Rooibos tea infusions makes the product beneficial to the user’s health and

Kim Fouche, Port Alfred –based dis-tributor of the Annique range of Health and Beauty Products, is delighted to announce that she will now be supply-ing the Annique products on a full time basis.

Forty years of home made eats, arts and crafts in KentonThe Kenton home Industries is an institu-tion in the seaside village. established 40 years ago it continues to offer locals and vis-itors to the resort, sweet and savourty treats alongside a bevy of handcrafts created with love.

As Mel Beresford, one of the members, suggests “It not only offers a wide variety of treats and gifts but it is also an outlet for the many crafters and home bakers who retire to our town and offer stimulation and pur-pose to so many here in Kenton”.

here you will find home-grown veg, coun-try-fresh chickens and eggs, home-made ginger beer and a selection of indoor plants, also earth-worm tea and earth-worm farms. There’s hand-made glassware, cards, knit-ware, crochet, jewellery and even a selec-tion of second hand books. Candles, honey, cordials, preserves and frozen home-cooked meals. And of course all those tea time treats from savoury quiches to milk tart, koeksis-ters, brownies, morning rusks, anytime bis-cuits and even fudge.

Kenton Framing

Enthusiastic art lover, Claire Louw, recently purchased Kenton Framing, previously trading as Savannah framers in Kenton-on-Sea. originally from Johannesburg, Claire relocated to Bushman’s River Mouth three years ago. “I have a great love of art and a great collection of my own art and pictures,” Claire said.

Claire’s decision to take over the business was a serendipitous one, having returned from a holiday in China with a delicate paper cutting, she asked a friend where she could have this delicate item framed. The friend recommended Savannah framers. Claire met Di Bott, the then owner of the business, and the women struck up a great rapport. Claire’s friend later enquired whether she came right with the framing and just happened to mention that the business was for sale. After giving it some thought Claire contacted Di and discovered that Di after meeting Claire had thought her to be the perfect candidate to take over the business and was delighted with being approached. This certainly made for a happy transition period in the business which saw Di and Claire working side by side with Di passing on skills and know-how until the 1st of August when Claire took over the reins entirely.

“I see some beautiful art coming through here and I am delighted to help enhance it,” a beaming Claire said. “The combination of creativity with the need for precision really suits me,” she said. Working in the shop daily also affords Claire, a relative newcomer to the area, opportunities to become familiar with more of the locals and expand her horizons. “I just love it here,” she added.

Kenton Framing stocks an extensive range of frames, mounting and boards. Each work brought in is given the personal touch and made up according to the customer’s unique preferences. “I offer conservation framing which means I do not do anything to the artwork that cannot be undone and we waterproof all works to protect it against damp,” she said.

Kenton Framing is open from 08:30-16:00 daily except for Wednesday’s when as per Kenton tradition it closes at 13:00. on Saturday’s it is open from 08:30-11:30.

Beads For aFrica

It’s a family affair at Beads For Africa, with mom, Di Churnside, dad, Dave, and son, Guy, designing and creating new items for this treasure trove of a shop situated in the basement of the Sea Cottage Estates Building in Kenton on Sea. Even daughter, Dania, has a shelf offering dried fruits and nuts. And after thirteen years with the business, Sarah Mahlangu is part of this happy family at Beads for Africa.

“About 20 years ago we moved from the Vaal River to Randburg and on recommendation of friends came down here for a holiday. We found a little advertisement for the business under our vehicle’s windscreen wiper and decided to have a look. We decided there and then to do it and also bought a small fisherman’s cottage in Elliot Street,” Di said.

Beads For Africa stock mobiles, key rings, bookmarks, jewellery catering for everyone from bracelets for kids and lovely ethnic and funky items for all to more elegant items for adults and so much more. A hand made bag range from Zimbabwe and wood carvings and other wooden items created by Dave. All the bead items are made with carefully sourced Czechoslovakia glass beads.

Up-cycling is a natural trend for Dave, for example Di pointed out the spectacular range of copper jewellery made from the pipes of their old geyser. Another item, a unique black glass pendant was created from the glass from a bottle they brought back from Wales many years ago, which unfortunately broke, but which Dave up-cycled into this unique treasure.

The Intarsia or laminated wood jewellery and accessory items, are detailed and time-consuming works to create, but the final products offer such richness with the contrasts created between the light and darker shadings of wood utilised.

You need to spend time in this busy little basement as there are so many items to peruse, here you’ll find an item to suite every personality, a gift for everyone. And on the slight chance that you don’t see anything that tickles your fancy why not ask for a custom-made design.

Beads For Africa is also a great place to source individualised items for guests of every kind of function – from weddings through to business events – a key ring, a bookmark, or a personalised wine stem adornment to add that extra pizazz to your next elegant dinner.

The trading hours are 08:30-16:00 except for Wednesday’s when they close at 13:00 and on Saturday’s they are open until 13:00.

sunshine spar

The Sunshine Spar recently underwent a revamp with the installation of a new floor, refrigeration, touch screen cash points, and front entrances.

“We need to design a store that can accommodate both our in and out of season trade,” Christo Pienaar, one of the three owners of the business, said. The other owners are Francois Wehmeyer and Nelmarie Jansen.

“We are a community-minded enterprise and we are well aware of the importance of catering for our 11 months out of the year trade, our valued locals, having said that our facilities need to be upgraded in regularly in order to make the annual seasonal transition which brings with it additional demands and requirements in order for us to operate more efficiently,” he added.

The growth of the Sunshine Spar over the years has created employment opportunities and in order to continue striving for an improved standard of service, the owners reinvest into their store at regular intervals in order to offer even better service for their existing clientele.

“Where we can buy local produce, we do, for example in our fruit and vegetable section we currently stock tomatoes, cucumbers and salad packs all sourced locally,” Christo said. Speciality items are stocked according to demand but if there are items that you require on a regular basis but do not yet find on their shelves, all you need to do is ask. “We cater for demand,” Christo said.

FOCUS ON KENTON ON SEAmaBini’s coFFee shop

Sandor Isaacs is an old hand in the coffee shop and restaurant business, but it wasn’t until last year December when he finally took the plunge to set-up shop for himself. “I have worked in restaurants and coffee shops in the area since my high school days, then one day a local lady who had come to know me over the years as I worked in various different venues, said to me, “Sandor it’s time for you to stop working for other people and to start your own business”. Initially Sandor gave scant regard to the comment but hours later he pondered the idea and realised other than a permanent venue, he already had everything required to set up shop, as he and a friend were already running a catering business, Glitz ‘n Glamour, and had all the essentials required to run a coffee shop.

The venue on Main Street lent itself to apportioning a section of the premises to arts and crafts and Sandor contacted local artists and crafters and offered them the opportunity to exhibit their wares on site. “Having interesting things to look at gives my clients something to do while their meal is being prepared,” he added.

A unique touch is the fact that all Mabini menu items are also available as take away meals from their daily menu through to the Sunday Lunch menu offering. All food is prepared freshly on site with one or two treasured items in the dessert line brought in by local ‘experts’. Breakfast, lunch and dinner and tea-time is catered for and pizzas are on offer too. The daily specials are extremely reasonably priced and offer handsome portions.

cannon plant & tool hire

Cannon Plant & Tool Hire recently extended their services after building new premises in Boknes. Initially owner, Piet van Rooyen, built the premises as he needed a workshop where he could service and repair his equipment. However Piet soon realised that the need existed for a small hardware convenience store which stocks small items builders working in Cannon Rock or Boknes may require.

Piet originally started Canon Plant & Tool Hire from his garage in Cannon Rocks after 20 years in construction whilst working for Telkom. The demand soon outgrew his premises with the generous support from the local community of builders in Boknes, Kenton, Bushman’s and Alexandria and that’s when, almost nine years ago, the premises in Kenton, located at number one School Road, was opened.

Cannon Plant & Tool Hire cater for all builders’ equipment tool hire and is open from 07:00-17:00 from Monday to Friday and also offer a delivery service for a fee. Natasha Basson is available on site in Kenton to assist you while Hannetjie Beneke is in charge of the mini-hardware store on Boknes or give Piet a call on 072 356 0108/046 648 2237.

PREVIoUSLY owned vehicles, used cars or second-hand cars, choose your own specific word of choice for it, some even call it ‘demo’ mod-els. No matter the description , they all have ‘mileage’ on the odometer, proving it has been owned and driv-en by someone else and unless the owner’s manual comes with it, you won’t know who or where from.

When searching for a used vehi-cle one should be concerned about quite a lot of pointers. Most impor-tant factor is has any body-repairs been done to it and if so, why ? Ac-cident repairs (in my estimation) should become part of any vehicle’s permanent history. on average most people owns approximately five to seven vehicles in their lifetime, this is not a statistic, but from my own experience in the motor-trade.

The value of your vehicle, as a

trade-in, purely depends on the condition of it. The appraisal of any vehicle begins with the body (shell) and checking whether it has been repainted , has dents or chip marks that needs any form of repair.

Mechanical faults are the next in line for pre-purchase inspection. En-gine, transmission , drive-train, elec-trical systems, glass, etc thereafter one needs to inspect the interio as it is also a factor that lessens the value,

for example take a look at the con-dition of the seats, carpets, look for any dashboard damage and so forth.

Why am I telling you all this? It is entirely up to you, the buyer, to in-spect the possible new (used car) acquisition. In a similar manner the agreements must be made before-hand, if necessary, about any re-quired extra work to be done to such a vehicle.

The joy of owning a newer car is al-ways a thrill to anyone and shouldn’t become a heartache because of some discrepancy not sorted out from the start. The new law concerning buy-ers’ protection is not the answer to anyone. Take my word for it, going to court is not cheap .

Motoring tip for the week: Always make your purchase from a repu-table dealer.

Cheers, Erich.

Stone Ground Flour Now in Stock

GEE wizz, I am longing to put that sign on my office door during the week! I want to be the one sitting on a boat out at sea while everybody else is at work. I could legitimately use the excuse that I am doing re-search for my column. Any volunteers willing to take me out to sea?

The weather has been playing havoc with deep sea angling for the last couple of weeks, with strong winds intermittently whipping the sea into a frenzy of white capped swells, not conducive to peaceful fishing. The water temperature is quite warm, around 21° and the sea is clear. The commercial anglers have had very few fishing days this month and on the days that they have been able to go out, the cob have been scarce, plenty of carpenters, daggarad and other reds but not much of the big-ger fish (cob, geelbek, hake).

A few charters are managing to get a couple of hours of deep sea fish-ing in, in between almost gale force winds, but they too are catching the big stuff. We caught up with skipper, Albert Kolver, a few days ago, he came down from Kroonstad to do a little fishing with a couple of his buddies and they went out to the Beacon at about 35m and caught a few size cob and some reds but nothing spectacular. They tell me that that they had a super day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves despite the meager catches.

Two weeks ago Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club participated in the Lee Cat Inter-Club Competition. Conditions were good and the weather lovely, however par for the course very few fish were caught, only two cob of size, in the entire competition. This species competition has a different host club for each event, with the host club providing boats and skippers to the guest clubs. There were two teams (A&B) from PARSC, a few from Dias Fishing Club and a few from Port Elizabeth that took part. Congratulations go to PARSC’s B team, Carel de Jaeger, Arthur Judd and Brian Cullen who won the event.

Well that’s it for this week please contact me with all your fishing news on 082 676-1742 or email [email protected].

Believe it or not, despite the grim expressions, these three guys, Daan Odendaal, Johan Lombaard and Skipper, Albert Kolver really enjoyed their fishing trip! Al-bert has a holiday home in Port Alfred and regularly comes down from Kroon-stad to fish off his boat SUNFISH.

Road Tests Prove Positive for Go Kart Enthusiasts

GINa FlOreNce

Port Alfred’s central business district was closed by the traffic department on Sunday the 18th of August at 7am as extensive testing was conducted to prove the efficacy of the new roads, with a view to possibly re-hosting the Border vs. P.E Go Kart Championships. The tests have proved positive for Go Kart en-thusiasts, who are reportedly “happy with the grip,” and plans to conduct further testing on safety and precautions prior to organizing the event have been set in motion.

Twelve year old Cameron Kelly from the Algoa Kart and Mo-torcycle Club in P.E was chosen to test the theoretical 1.1km course - which stretches from the outskirts of Gluckman Street, down Main Street and past the library - on a Mini- Rok Kart with a 60cc engine. According to Presenter and Go Kart enthusiast, Brendan Kelly, “The route comprises a mix of tight corners, fast flowing sweeps and a long straight down Main Street, (making it) ideal for Go Karts”.

The next test will be with a Kart from a higher classification, namely a Super- Rok with a 125cc engine, and is due to be conducted within the next few months.

It's official! Cameron has been selected to race for Team South Africa at the World Rok Kart finals in Italy later this year!
