Tyler Pearce is a Year 9 student at Beerwah State High

School and an Australian Indoor Rowing Record Holder.

Tyler is the new Club Captain of the Sunshine Coast

Indoor Rowing Club, and is the youngest member to sit on

the committee. He has been recommended by a number of

teachers at Beerwah High School.

Tyler does a lot of charity work as well as his sport and is

undertaking the Great Cycle Challenge to raise money to

help the fight against childhood cancer in October. The

participants will pedal as many kilometres as they can

throughout the month.

This October, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Because right now, cancer is the largest single killer of children from disease in

Australia – over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die

every week.

Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

And so I am riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research

Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding

a cure for childhood cancer.

RACE DIRECTOR INSIGHTS!

I have had the privilege of being a Race Director and/or Indoor Rowing events organiser many times. There are a couple of things I’d like to share with you so at your next event you may feel a bit more knowledgeable and less stressed!

* It is important to understand the Resistance Setting on

the Rowing machine, the “Drag Factor”.

The lever on the side of the flywheel governs the resistance level: – “The Damper Setting” You should check the Drag Factor (DF) on the machine you are about to race on and adjust it to match the resistance you are used to. “Know the weight on the bar”. At an event where machines are connected to the Venue Racing Application system, the DF number is displayed on the monitor in the same location that your heart rate is displayed if you are wired up to a heart rate monitor. Look for the DF number displayed during your warm-up on the race machine, adjust it to the number you normally use. The lever position to obtain the desired DF will vary due to how clean the machine cylinder is. A clogged mesh will obstruct air from getting to the fan. “Know your Drag Factor number. Adjust the machine to match the DF you are familiar with.”

*It is important to understand the Start sequence!

When everyone is ready the Race Director will click on the “Prepare to Race” button on the computer, as soon as the rowing machines’ fans stop, the “Start” button will be selected. You will be holding your handle and be ready to start. At this stage your heart will be quite busy… Your monitor will display, 1. Sit Ready, 2. Attention, 3. ROW Begin rowing as soon as “ROW” appears, this is when the clock starts. Some people have made mistakes thinking time starts when they begin.

*It is important to Row Down after your race! By rowing down you will recover quicker. Maintaining a higher respiration rate and heart rate allows the body to recycle out noxious gases out of the body. You will feel better for it although it will be the last thing you will want to do! Enjoy your rowing!
