IntroductionThe use of sunscreens to reducesolar heat gain through glazing isrecognised as an importantconsideration in modernbuildings.
In Northern latitudes such as theUK, the sun's altitude is lower, resulting in more exposure forvertical glazing to heat gains.
With increasing emphasis oncontrolled internal environmentsand the need for reduced energyconsumption, planning for solargains is necessary even in airconditioned buildings.
Besides being very practical, sunscreens also provide thedesigner with additional creativeopportunities.
Screen typeSunscreens are produced in arange of 'louvred' blades or inellipsoid blade styles. Ellipsoidblades may be used in vertical orhorizontal form and can beadjustable.
MaterialAll sunscreen blades arealuminium. Framework or sideplates are also in aluminium, while wall brackets, brace armsand support arms are normally insteel or stainless steel.
FinishesAluminium profiles are available innatural anodised or polyesterpowder coat. Steel is plated andpolyester powder coat finished.Stainless steel is self colour.
Fixing methodsSimple screens may be fixed tostructure via wall brackets andbrace arms. Larger / heavierscreens can be fitted via supportarms or direct to structure.
Screens may be fitted to curtainwall systems by the use of ourspecial brackets. However, thesuitability of the curtain wallprofile to carry the imposed loadsmust be confirmed.
Centres of wall brackets /support arms depends on screentype, span and design wind load.
Sunscreens above windows The length and width ofprojection of a screen dependson a number of variable factorsamong which are time of yearand time of day.
For south facing elevations inthe UK the highest sun altitudeoccurs at mid day. The sunaltitude rises during the monthsof April and May, peaking atJune, then declining through toSeptember.
The east-west sun path alsomeans that for optimumshading a sunscreen should bewider than the window inquestion.
However providing optimumshading for all occasions basedsolely on sun position would beincorrect. Shading requirementsshould be considered (by therelevant consultant) inconjunction with the type ofglazing, building structure, typeof sky (cloudy / clear) etc.
Sun altitude at 52º latitudeat 12 noon

Sun altitude at 55º latitude at 12 noon

South facing sunscreens should behorizontal, either projecting from thehead of the window or horizontalplaced in front of the window.
Screens facing east or west shouldbe vertical (moveable).

Altitude is the angle up from thehorizon.Azimuth is the angle along thehorizon, with zero degreescorresponding to north andincreasing in a clockwise fashion.
Sunscreen ‘depth’ and ‘width’.
Depth = height
tan VSA
Width = depth x tan HSA
Width is the size that the screenshould project beyond thewindow jamb for maximum sunscreening.
Shadow AnglesWhen shading a window, theabsolute azimuth and altitude ofthe sun are not as important asthe horizontal and verticalshadow angles relative to theorientation of a specific surface.
The Horizontal Shadow Angle(HSA) is the angle between theorientation of a surface and thesolar azimuth.
The Vertical Shadow Angle (VSA)is the angle formed by a virtualplane between the bottom lefthand and right hand corners ofthe window and the sun.
HSA and VSA are measured inthe sense NESW. North beingzero degrees, east being 90degrees.
Sunscreen blade angle andpitchBlade spacing must cater for thehigh point of the sun in June andfor the low point - normallyconsidered to be September(while in winter months the sun islower it is also weaker due togeneral daylight conditions).

SizesFixed blades are available in 100,200, 300, and 400 mm styles.
Blade spanThe span (length) of blades doesdepend on design loads (seeblade length guide).
FixingsThe small 100 mm and the 200mm blades would normally beassembled on to side plates(ladder construction), forconnection to support arms.
Blades types 200 and 300 can befitted as per the adjustable bladedetails but with the link rodlocked in the required position. This arrangement caters forexpansion / contraction of blades.
The large 400 blades wouldgenerally be fitted direct tostructure utilising our specialexpansion bracket fittings.
End capsProfiled end caps are fitted toblades with expansion fixingarrangements.
For shorter blade spans, endcaps may be used for fixing tosupport arms / structure.

GeneralAdjustable blades have support /pivot axles housed in analuminium channel frame - topand bottom for verticalapplications and each side forhorizontal. A link rod joins eachsunbreaker blade to ensureuniform movement.
Control of adjustable units is byelectric actuator fitted to theconnection rod.
RotationBlade rotation is clockwise.
SizesBlades are available in 200 mmand 300 mm profiles produced inmodular sizes with 'non standard'lengths being catered for byclosure angles.
Blade SpanThe span (length) of blades doesdepend on design loads.Recommended spans are givenfor each blade type.
End capsProfiled end caps are fitted toellipsoid blades.
Link rodsAluminium channel with stainlesssteel pins.
ConnectorFlat bar for joining link rodson larger screens.
Head / cill or side framesExtruded aluminium channel.
AxlesStainless steel:Axles have nylon pivot bushes.Head and side axles are fittedwith centralising collar.
Electric operation24 volt motors can be supplied. These are fitted with an additionalprotective cover.
Technical performanceThe axle mechanism has beensubject to a 50 000 cycle weartest with no deterioration ofcomponent parts.
Pivot axles and channel framehave had static load test of 150kg (1.5 KN) applied to each axlefor a period of 20 mins withoutpermanent distortion to axle orframe.
Ellipsoid blades have beensubjected to uniformly distributedload tests to establish bladelength and acceptable deflection.

Sunscreens may be fitted to various types of curtain wallmullions.
These details show the mostcommon form of fixing sunscreensupport arms. The holes requiredin the mullion would normally befactory drilled for accuracy.
Where long blade spans or largerprojecting screens are required, brace arms may be needed todistribute loads over the mullion.
For these screen applications, thecurtain wall supplier must confirmthe suitability of their systemprofile to carry the imposed loads.
The depth of screen arms isdetermined by screen projection, span and imposed loads (wind /snow / self weight), as is thenumber and size of fixing pins.

SizesLouvred screens are producedfrom our 50, 75 or 100 bladeprofiles.
Framed screensThese are light weight simplescreens of short projection andlimited span.
They are fitted to structure viawall brackets and have brace armsupports.
Ladder screensScreens with greater projection orlonger span between supportscan be produced in thisconstruction. Also used wherebrace arms are not desired.
A 75 mm diameter tube facia isavailable for ladder screens.
Simple brace bars are fitted toblades where required. Wherefacia tubes are used the ‘brace’will be a rod / spacer.
Vertical screensThese will generally follow thesame format as above.
