Th e commitment of Sunnybrook Foundation’s volunteers

Michael Horgan’s fi rst experience of Sunnybrook was in 1973, when a torn ligament, sustained playing football, saw him admitted to

Sunnybrook’s Emergency Department. This marked the beginning of a long and dedicated commitment to Sunnybrook, and laid the foundation for his most recent and biggest success as a volunteer – helping to raise $25 million for the Schulich Heart Centre.

Michael is Chair of the Schulich Heart Centre Campaign Cabinet, a volunteer post charged with the responsibility of leading fundraising initiatives for the heart centre.

With the successful completion of the Schulich Heart Centre Campaign’s major capital project in December (see story overleaf), Michael is brimming with delight.

“This was, without a doubt, both the toughest challenge and the greatest achievement that our volunteer cabinet has experienced,” remarked Michael, who credits the success of the $10 million all-or-nothing matching campaign to lots of hard work and a bit of good luck.

As a keen golfer, Michael even

incorporates his hobbies into his volunteer fundraising by co-chairing the committee which organizes the annual Sunnybrook Golf Classic, also in support of the Schulich Heart Centre. Now in its fourteenth year, the Golf Classic has raised over $1 million.

When asked why he invests so much time supporting the Schulich Heart Centre, Michael was unhesitating in his reply. “Cardiac care is a big issue. Sunnybrook leads the way in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedures and innovation, and the physicians are absolutely committed to the best practices in cardiac care.”

“Donating to the Schulich Heart Centre is the best investment that anyone will ever make,” says Michael. “This is something that I fi rmly believe in, and I am delighted that the centre has garnered such loyalty and support from the community.”

“The real key to the success of the matching campaign is the strong base of donors who recognize the importance of the work done at the Schulich Heart Centre, and who have stepped up to support it,” says Michael. “Their support means the difference between excellent care, and extraordinary care.”

Driven by seeing tangible results, Michael is particularly looking forward to the completion of the Cardiac Acute Care Unit which will be renovated and technologically enhanced to care for our cardiac patients.

While Michael is busy with work for the heart centre, his wife, Mary-Ellen, sits on the Brain Sciences Campaign Cabinet, raising funds for this key hospital program, including The Centre of Advanced Neuro-Imaging and Diverse Interventions (CANDI).

“CANDI is of great interest to Michael and me,” says Mary-Ellen. “Once built, the centre will be used to monitor physicial changes to the brain before, during and after treatment of brain disease.”

“This will have wide-reaching implications for the treatment of disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and multiple sclerosis, as well as the cognitive and behavioural aspects of stroke, and mood and anxiety disorders.”

To learn more about the Schulich Heart Centre or CANDI visit www.sunnybrookfoundation.ca or call 416-480-4483.
