This year is no exception. I’ve enjoyed the events I have attended so far – including Choir Girl last week – and am looking forward to the Trade Winds on Friday evening. If you haven’t made it out yet, jump online and check out the libraries Festival Fun program, which includes extended hours at the city library. Head to darwin.nt. gov.au/libraries/ events to see the latest program. You can also pick up a great meal with the family at Festival Park (next to the Civic Centre) or just enjoy the ambience. Today the City of Darwin is hosting a public workshop that provides an opportunity for everyone to get involved in the development of the Darwin CBD Masterplan. More than 100 people will be meeting to discuss the future planning of the CBD. There are limited places available and I encourage anyone who is interested to join in at the Double Tree by Hilton. You can also have input on the project via a survey on our website. The Darwin CBD Masterplan aims to produce a precinct-based blueprint and set of principles to guide Darwin’s growth over the next 20 years. We are focused on liveability, connections into the CBD, potential areas for new development, and guidance for the private sector on how to get the best commercial return on investment in the CBD. These opportunities will include: Movement by private and public transport, pedestrians and bicycle. The public realm, including streets, parks, malls, the water’s edge and open spaces. Infrastructure such as arterial roads, bridges, utility services and social infrastructure. Potential and existing tourist networks and facilities that tell the stories of Darwin. Land uses such as office, retail, tourism, residential and community spaces. Landscaping character. Have you joined our conversation on the web? Our Darwin ordinary council meetings are now live on the web so you can listen in to decision-making discussions about your city. The webcasting is part of a three-month trial that is running between July and December. Jump online to join us at our next council meeting – and let us know what you think via our online survey. Finally, thanks to everyone who bought a cupcake from our RSPCA Cupcake stall in The Mall on Monday. The stall raised more than $1000. It’s contributing to an early total of $6200 heading into the RSPCA NT fundraiser kitty. Cash deposits are yet to be counted and the RSPCA are accepting further donations, so don’t miss out. You can head to the RSPCA website at rspcacupcakeday.com.au. Your donations will help give a surrendered puppy a home, rescue a neglected pony, provide emergency surgery to an injured kitten and help save lives. Early vote option available EARLY voting in this year’s feder- al election began yesterday, for voters unable to vote on the day. ‘‘The early voting services allow people who may be working, away on holidays or cannot easily access a polling centre on Saturday, September 7, to register their vote in advance so they do not miss out on having their voice heard at this election,’’ said NT electoral officer Robert Pugsley. ‘‘In Darwin, the early voting centre is located at the Double Tree by Hilton Esplanade Hotel, at 116 The Esplanade.’’ ‘‘Early voting services for Territorians will be available at other locations around the Terr- itory including Darwin Internat- ional Airport, Lyons, Palmerston, Fred’s Pass, Jabiru, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek,’’ Mr Pugsley said. The venue is open from 8.30am 5.30pm. Visit aec.gov.au. Helping girls with life skills THE Palmerston Girls Academy will be hosting the 2013 Nestle Deadly Chicks Mentoring Seminar from today until Friday. Around 100 girls from across NT will take part. Over the three days the girls will rotate through educational workshops concerning personal presentation, nutrition and hygiene, sexual and mental health, resume writing, interview skills, financial literacy, respect for culture, tertiary education options and workplace readiness. The workshops will focus on the benefits of positive self- image, educational commitment, responsible personal conduct, employment, respect for self and others, and pride in culture. Prominent indigenous women, such as Dorothy Morrison, chief executive of Heart Foundation Darwin, will be there.
