From the time it was founded in 1398 by King Taejo during Chosun Dynasty, Sungkyunkwan became the sole national academy of higher education in Korea until the beginning of the 20th century. Sungkyunkwan has produced many prominent scholars who have played a pivotal role in the advancement of Korean philosophy, arts and sciences. Classrooms, dormitories and other traditional Korean style structures, well preserved and designated as national treasures, are still located on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in uptown Seoul.
Sungkyunkwan University was founded in 1946, preserving the national tradition and pride of Sungkyunkwan that had been the sole national academy of higher education in Korea. With vision, the university opened a second campus in Suwon in 1979 and all the natural sciencesrelated colleges and schools were moved from the main campus. Currently, the university is operated on these two campuses; the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Seoul, and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon. Since 1996, Samsung, which is one of the largest multinational companies in the world, has been nancially supporting our university. The university celebrated its 600th anniversary in 1998 and has set out an ambitious university development plan called VISION 2020, with its goal to become one of theglobally leading universities in the world. SKKU will strive to achieve this vision by providing world-class education and producing world-class research outcomes that are recognized globally. At present, the university has approximately 18,000 undergraduate students and 6900 graduate students in 18 colleges and schools.

The School of Pharmacy was established in 1953 and has provided top-class pharmaceutical education in Korea ever since. Approximately ve thousand of the School’s alumni are working in community pharmacies and hospitals as pharmacists, pharmaceutical and other related companies as research scientists, and in government agencies. Many pharmacists and researchers who graduated from the School are actively contributing to the nation’s health care policy and developing new pharmaceuticals for the well-being of humankind. Currently, 273 undergraduate students and 204 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are enrolled in the School of Pharmacy. The School receives annual extramural research funds in excess of $6.7 million from both the public and private sectors. Our faculty members and graduate students publish annually over 160 peer-reviewed research papers in SCI journals. As a part of our eorts to be a world leader in pharmacy education, the School strives to provide competitive educational programs in cutting-edge teaching and research facilities for undergraduate and graduate students. The School of Pharmacy aims to educate students who are committed to pharmaceutical care and promotes scholarly activities in pharmaceutical sciences.
