Initially the construction of this tramway was promoted by the United KingdomTramways, Light Railways and Electrical Syndicate Ltd (UKTLR) under the Houghton-le-Spring and District Tramways Order of 1900, but despite its grand sounding namethe UKTLR was in no financial position to commence construction of the tramway.

In November 1903 the Sunderland & District Electric Tramways Company Ltd wasformed and took over construction of the tramway from the UKTLR. Commencing inJanuary 1904 the tramway was built to standard gauge by Bruce Peebles & Co ofEdinburgh and was all but complete by May 1905, but negotiations with SunderlandCorporation for the temporary supply of electricity fell through and it was not until 10thJune 1905 that the tramway opened to the public, using electricity supplied by thecompany's own power station. By 1908, however, electricity was being supplied by theDurham Collieries Power Company, who operated from premises adjacent to theTramway Company's depot in Philadelphia. When the Power Company ran intodifficulties and went into liquidation it was taken over by the Newcastle-upon-TyneElectric Supply Company who promptly gave notice that it was to raise the charges, which would have placed the Tramway Company in financial difficulties. A High Courtcase followed and the Tramway Company was succesful in stalling the increase, butthis was just the start of the financial difficulties that were to beset the Company untilits demise in 1925.

The tramway as built began near the coast at Grangetown (where it connected withthe Sunderland Corporation system) and ran south to Ryhope before turning

westwards through Tunstall, Silksworth, East Herrington and West Herrington to NewHerrington; from there it turned south through Philadelphia (where the depot wassited) and Newbottle to Houghton-le-Spring. Two branch lines ran from NewHerrington to New Penshaw and from Houghton-le-Spring to Fencehouses. By August1906 the main line had been extended a further 3 miles to Easington, making a totalof just over 14¼ miles of track.

The initial fleet consisted of Nos. 1-15, open-top cars from Brush and Nos. 16-30,top-covered cars from Etablissements Arbel of Paris, liveried in blue and white.

From the commencement of operations the Tramway Company was undercapitalisedand when buses began to erode the tramway's takings just before the Great War theCompany called in a Receiver. However the onset of the War brought a brief respitefor the Company as most of the competing buses were requisitioned for war work, butthis was only to be temporary. When the War ended bus competition began again inearnest and with the prospect of having to renew the worn out track and infrastructurethe Company had little option but to abandon the system.

The first closure came in May 1924 when the branch line to New Penshaw was closedand replaced by the Company's own buses, which also offered a connection toWashington. In June 1924 the line to the south of Houghton-le-Spring was closed andreplaced by buses.

At a meeting of the shareholders on the 6th October 1924 it was agreed that thetramway system be totally abandoned in favour of buses and following this, inFebruary 1925, the name of the Company was changed to Sunderland DistrictTransport Company Ltd.

On the 12th July 1925 the final tram ran and the tram depot was converted toaccomodate the buses. The cost of conversion, however, was too large a burden forthe Company, which again proved to be undercapitalised and for the second time aReceiver was appointed. On the 18th June 1927 the Sunderland District OmnibusCompany Ltd (SDO) was registered and fresh share capital injected.

In 1928 the SDO acquired two operators that brought with them two additional routes- Newcastle to Hartlepool via Sunderland and Herrington Burn to Gateshead, alongwith 6 vehicles.

On the 1st January 1931 the Northern General Transport Company acquired the entireshare capital of the SDO, which continued to be operated as a subsidiary.

In October 1931 the SDO, along with the Northern General Transport Company andUnited Automobile Services acquired the business of A1 Services of Coundon, whichallowed the Company to run through from Sunderland and Durham to Bishop Auckland.

Thereafter the operations of the SDO gradually expanded under the influence of its

parent company.

In 1932 the Company introduced double-deckers to the erstwhile single-deck fleetwhen 10 AEC Regents (Nos. 111-120) were purchased and in 1951 the SDO pioneeredthe inroduction of the underfloor-engined chassis to the Northern General group when10 Leyland Royal Tigers (Nos. 238-247) were added to the fleet.

Although the main depot remained at Philadelphia throughout the Company'sexistence a depot in Crow Lane, Sunderland was also used. This accomodated 10vehicles although the premises were sold off following the cessation of World War II.Land at Houghton-le-Spring was purchased in 1929 with the intention of building a newdepot but this never materialised, whilst additional accomodation at Hetton-le-Holewas used until 1958 for the storage of coaches surplus to requirements during thewinter.

In 1968 the BET sold its bus interests to the Transport Holding Company (later theNational Bus Company [NBC]) and Northern General Transport thus became a state-owned company. The NBC thought that the way forward was with larger operatingunits. Northern General had a number of subsidiaries and the NBC, in its wisdom, decided that all should be absorbed into the parent company. As a result the assetsand services of the SDO passed to Northern General on the 1st January 1975, bringingto an end 70 years of the SDO’s separate tram and bus operations.
