“What is truth? said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer.” This comment on John 18:38 is the opening line of Sir Francis Bacon’s essay Of Truth, and though 400 years have passed since Bacon wrote this line and 2,000 years since Pilate first asked the question, our world has not changed much. We live in a world that asks, “What is truth?” and, having asked the question, does not stick around to hear the answer.

We also live in a world that is uncertain that there is an answer to the question of “what is truth.” For example, in news and politics the same events are given completely different portrayals depending on what radio station, TV station, newspaper, or website you find yourself listening to or reading. Which portrayal is true? How do we sort through all these divergent opinions and beliefs to figure out what is really happening? Even more tragic, for many people the situation seems even bleaker when it comes to religious truth. It is estimated that there are roughly 4,200 religions in the world, and many of these religions can be even further divided into subgroups. For example, as of 2014 it was estimated that there were roughly 45,000 Christian denominations worldwide. Given the staggering number of religious beliefs in the world, is it any wonder that many are tempted to ask, “What is truth?” and to throw their hands up in despair?

Yet, we know that truth does exist and can indeed be known. Jesus tells us that He Him-self is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Likewise, Jesus testifies saying, “for this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice” (John 18:37). It is not up to us to invent or discover the truth. Rather Truth Himself came and lived among us and now “the Spirit of truth” works through God’s word to “guide you into all the truth” by pointing you to Christ (John 16:13). This is why the Psalm-ist can praise God saying, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119:105). Just like the headlights on your car light the road to show you where to go and dangers to avoid, so too God’s word lights our way as we journey through this dark world.

Does this mean all people will desire to know the truth or listen to it? Sadly no. In 2 Timo-thy 4 Paul writes to Timothy charging him to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2) but also warning him that, “the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Our sinful passions and desires do not like hearing what God wants us to hear; our itching ears like hearing what they want to hear.

How do we guard against our itching ears? We spend time in God’s Word checking to see if what we are being told is truth can really be found in there. This is what the Bereans did in Acts 17 and why Luke commends them, writing: “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character . . . for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed” (Acts 17:11-12).

What is truth? Can we really know it? Jesus is the truth, and we can certainly know Him. He came and dwelt among us, He remains with us yet today, and His Spirit continues to guide us into all truth as He works through the lamp of God’s Word. We may be tempted by people saying what our itching ears desire to hear, but we can follow the example of the Bereans, examining the Scriptures every day to see if what we are hearing is true. This is exactly what our Lord urges us to do, for He tells us, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).

Lord, keep us steadfast in Your word. Help us to abide in Your word so we may know the truth and be set free. Amen.

Pastor’s Letter June 2019

MAY 2019 WOMEN OF JOY MEETING MINUTES Joy Lutheran Church Basement Tuesday, May 14th, at 9:30 a.m.

Present: Iva Lou Fluegel, Marilyn Benting, Laurie Hoheisel, Sara Elmstrand, Elaine Belsheim, Gretchen Beecroft, Diane Althoff, Jody Dobe and Konnie O’Neil Refreshments were served by Iva Lou Fluegel. Elaine Belsheim read an excerpt from the Lutheran Witness, “Hot Dish Heaven—Lutheran Potluck.” The Bible Study was “Running the Race” from the Lutheran Women’s Quarterly. President Sara Elmstrand called the meeting to order. The April minutes were approved as read. Treasurer’s report has a balance of $1,815.63. Old Business: Because of unforeseen difficulty, no one attended the LWML Spring Rally May 4th at Lord of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Forest Lake. Sara will make sure our in-gathering donation of polar fleece to sew hats for the homeless is delivered. It was decided that no bake sales will be scheduled for the summer months. Tentative date for the next bake sale is Sunday, September 15th. FYI: A new sink has been installed in the sacristy. Ongoing concern regarding the appearance of the counter top surface in the newly remodeled kitchen. Issue not resolved. New Business: Konnie O’Neil suggested the possibility of a summer activity for Women of Joy and guests including a walk-ing tour of the Munsinger Gardens in St. Cloud, followed by viewing The Saint John’s Bible at the St. John’s University Library, Collegeville and lunch either at a restaurant or at the college food service. Diane Althoff suggested we explore using the Senior Activities Center bus for transportation versus several individual drivers. Konnie will contact Audrey Clough or Jeannie Winselman from SAC regarding availability of bus transportation, number of passengers and cost. Tentative date is Thursday, July 18, 2019. Offering of MITES and the Women of Joy general fund were collected. Meeting ended with LWML pledge, prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. Next meeting: Tuesday, September 10, 2019. Respectfully submitted by acting secretary, Konnie O”Neil
