From the Interim Pastor….

Sitting in front of a blank computer screen, facing yet another newsletter

deadline, thinking I’ve been doing this for nearly half a century…. Then, an email

sharing an article from the Wall Street Journal about “pews and cradles.” Got my

attention for sure. It spoke of the declining church attendance among young

families coupled with the declining birth rate in our country. Of course, the WSJ

saw implications for the future of political power.

I was reminded of an article in Living Lutheran by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

titled “What’s God Up To?” She wrote of the same decline and problems as did

the WSJ, except that instead of asking what can we do, Bishop Eaton asked that

we remember whose church this and who indeed is in charge. The article

reminded us of the times when the People of God thought they were at the end

of the road only to find that God was doing a new thing. None of us knows what

God is up to, but we sure don’t want to get in the way!

If we want to attract people to our congregations to rebuild a

memory, God will not bless our efforts. But if we – grabbed by

the Spirit in baptism, changed by the word, intimately and lovingly

connected to Jesus and each other in communion, and set free

by grace to serve the neighbor – invite all people into true life, then

we shall become part of the answer.

To that, I say, Amen Bishop! It sounds a lot like Helping Transform Lives in Christ!

Summary of Council Meeting Minutes June 10, 2019

Staff Reports: Pastor Jim Bangle:

Pastor Bangle spoke proudly of our church’s web page as he reminded us that this is important way to represent our church (11,000 hits in the past 3 years). It was also noted that there is a lot of traffic on the web calendar. The decision was made to continue to use the web calendar and to discontinue the use of google calendar.

Committee Reports: Audio Visual: Motion-activated cameras were installed around the perimeter of the church. The next step is to determine if further monitoring is necessary during Sunday services. Call Committee: The committee is actively screening candidates. Nominating Committee: The committee did a great job of selecting our new Council members. Outreach: Terry Huret is planning to write a training program focused on creating a safe environment for children. He will propose to have Family Promise participants to read and sign a list of rules in the presence of a host. Prayer: Thank you to the donors who gave $817 for the Prayer Quilt Ministry. WELCA – Volunteers completed 93 kits during a work day. Old Business: New Treasurer and Assistant – We thank Martin Schick for his many years of dutiful service. Martin will now assist the new Treasurer, Paul Castille. New Business: Confirmation! New Members! – The church is happy to welcome the new confirmands as voting members. Thanks for faithful service to retiring Council members – Lynn Bulle, Terry Huret, Edna Kinner, and Zach Trumbo.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Mission Statement:

Holy Trinity Lutheran church, called by Christ, and guided by the Holy Spirit, affirms God’s love for all His creation. In response, we commit ourselves and our gifts to God’s work and His praise through worshipping, celebrating the sacraments, proclaiming the Gospel, teaching God’s Word, and loving all people. Following Christ’s example, we promise to live our faith in word and deed by being a living sacrifice for others, forgiv-ing and reconciling our differences, and ministering to those in need. All this we do in the sure and certain hope of our salvation.

Our Motto — Helping Transform Lives in Christ

Shingles and Shingrix

➢ About 1 out of 3 people in the United States will develop shingles.

➢ If you've had chickenpox you are at risk for having shingles.

➢ Your risk of getting shingles and having serious complications increases

➢ as you get older.

➢ About 1 in 10 people who get shingles develop nerve pain that can last for months or years.

➢ Shingles can lead to serious complications.

➢ You can get shingles more than once.

➢ Shingrix is the new vaccine for preventing shingles and long term nerve pain.

➢ Research has shown the new vaccine to be more than 90% effective in preventing shingles and

the nerve pain that often accompanies shingles.

➢ People can still get shingles after taking the vaccine, but the vaccine may reduce the severity and

duration of the shingles.

➢ The CDC recommends everyone 50 years and older with a healthy immune system receive the

new vaccine.

o Shingrix has been approved and recommended for people older than 50 including those who

have had shingles before and for those who have had the original vaccine; Zostarvax.

Talk to your Doctor about your vaccine options.

Talk with your insurance provider about the cost.

The More You Know… This month Worship and Music Committee continues its series of Trumpet articles covering a variety of topics on symbols, colors, design/architecture, traditions, seasons, and festivals that many of us either don’t think about very often or perhaps are not sure of the significance of these things. In the July article, we will provide an overview of the church year.

The Church Year

The church year differs from the calendar year in a number of respects – and this often generates some confusion. And, many worshippers do not often think about the church year calendar. However, un-derstanding the church year will provide context for what is seen and said in worship. This graphic provides a clear overview of the entire year. The church year begins with Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas. As noted in an earlier arti-

cle, this is a time of prepa-ration for the coming of Christ. Christmas comes next with about 2 weeks before the Baptism of Our Lord and Epiphany (the arrival of the Kings or Ma-gi). The Epiphany season varies in length, with its end marked by the Trans-figuration and the begin-ning of Lent. Lent lasts for 40 days (not counting Sundays) and ends with Palm Sunday. “The Three Days” are at the end of Holy Week, leading up to Easter Day. The Easter season continues until Pentecost. Currently, the church is in the largest section, listed in the graphic as the “Time after

Pentecost,” which is also called the Season of Pentecost. In 2019, there will be 23 Sundays in this season, ending with Christ the King Sunday – the end of the church year. Then the calendar cycle be-gins again with Advent. This Church Year calendar provides a framework for worship and study of the Good News. It guides worshippers through key events in the life of Christ and in the life of His church. Worship is struc-tured around the readings from the Bible, and those are selected to follow this church year. To cover more of the Bible in worship readings and to prevent readings recurring annually, there are 3 “Lectionaries” or series of readings that cycle year after year. Currently the readings are coming from Lectionary C. The selected readings in turn provide text options for the sermon. And, the hymns are selected to pair with the readings and the sermon topic. Other worship details such as banners, colors of paraments, choice of anthems, and use of special symbols (Lenten cross, Advent wreath, Chrismon tree, Easter lilies, etc.) are also tied to the church year calendar. In worship, it is not just the month and the date that matter – it is also the time of the church year! This provides a framework for worship in a liturgical body such as the Lutheran Church.
