Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with

the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the

faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ’s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of

victory—the marriage feast of the lamb.

Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, in whose image we are made, who claims us and calls us beloved. Amen.

Holy One, we confess that we are not awake for you. We are not faithful in using your gifts. We forget the least of our siblings. We do not see your beautiful image in one another. We are infected by sin

that divides your beloved community. Open our hearts to your coming, open our eyes to see you in our neighbor, open our hands to serve your creation. Amen.

Beloved, we are God’s children, and Jesus, our Beloved, opens the door to us. Through Jesus you are forgiven, by Jesus you are welcome, in Jesus you are called to rejoice! Let us live in the promises prepared for us from the foundation of the world. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

O God of justice and love, you illumine our way through life with the words of your Son. Give us the

light we need, and awaken us to the needs of others, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

First Reading Amos 5:18-24

In the days of Amos, people thought that the day of the LORD would be a time of great victory, but Amos

announced that it would be a day of darkness, not light. He said liturgy is no substitute for obedience.

The LORD demands justice and righteousness in the community.

Alas for you who desire the day of the L'()!

Why do you want the day of the L'()?

It is darkness, not light;

as if someone fled from a lion,

and was met by a bear;

or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall,

and was bitten by a snake.

Is not the day of the L'() darkness, not light,

and gloom with no brightness in it?

I hate, I despise your festivals,

and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings,

I will not accept them;

and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals

I will not look upon.

Take away from me the noise of your songs;

I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

But let justice roll down like waters,

and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Word of God, Word of Life! Thanks be to God!

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Some of the Thessalonians are worried that dead Christians will be excluded from the resurrection to

eternal life when Christ comes again. Paul reassures them with the word of hope that all Christians,

living or dead, will be raised into everlasting life with Christ.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may

not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so,

through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of

the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede

those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with

the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we

who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the

air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Word of God, Word of Life! Thanks be to God!

Gospel Reading Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus tells a parable about his own second coming, emphasizing the need for readiness at all times.

[Jesus said to the disciples:] “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their

lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the

foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As

the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout,

‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed

their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But

the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and

buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were

ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came

also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake

therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

This is the Gospel of our Lord, Thanks be to God!

Offertory Prayer

God of all goodness,

generations have turned to you,

gathered around your table,

and shared your abundant blessings.

Number us among them

that, as we gather these gifts from your abundance,

and give thanks for your rich blessings,

we may feast upon your very self

and care for all that you have made,

through Jesus Christ, our Sovereign and Servant.

Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Longing for Christ’s reign to come among us, we pray for the outpouring of God’s power on the church,

the world, and all in need.

Holy God, we feel the strain and stress in our nation as we work through the aftermath of the election

and the finalization of the vote counting. We need your blessing to unify our nation. We are divided

more than ever. Unite us in hope, Unite us in Christ.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy Creator, surprise and delight us with the beauty of the world you have made. Bless the work of

landscapers, architects, and artists whose work invites us into harmonious living with your creation.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy Judge, let justice roll down like waters over this world. Reign over the courtrooms of every land, in

the hearts of those who guard the law and those who stand accused of crimes. Be present in cases where

we long for both justice and mercy to prevail.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy Companion, console those who feel lonely or abandoned. Share the hours of those who live and eat

alone. Comfort those who have few friends or who struggle with their identity and place in this world.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy Protector, be with all observing Veterans Day this week. Guard the lives of active duty and retired

military personnel. Comfort all who mourn those who have died in the line of duty. Heal the wounds,

both physical and mental, experienced by service members.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Holy and Immortal One, we pray in thanksgiving for the lives of all who have died. Remind us of the

frailty and shortness of our own lives and inspire us to use them for the building up of your kingdom.

Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Receive our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior, until that day when you gather all creation

around your throne where you will reign forever and ever.

Amen.

With bold confidence in your love, almighty God, we place all for whom we pray into your eternal care;

through Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in

heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are

yours, now and forever. Amen

Video Streaming As this pandemic has made clear, online streaming of worship is a new and important reality for congregations. Even after the pandemic is over, there will be a need for continued online streaming of worship services. We realize that this level of equipment and computer software will be a significant investment and in doing so, we are offering opportunities for members to donate to this project.

If you would like to donate to this special project, please send your gifts to the church office (or you may drop it off in an envelope) with the words “Video Project” in the memo line and on the envelope. Our hope is to have the project complete just before Christmas so that we can utilize the streaming service for the holiday.

“Beet Hunger” Beets You can pickup pickled beets for the Beet Hunger project. Our group of pickle makers have quarts ready to go. You will find them on a table in the narthex. There are remittance envelopes for you to take and send your gifts directly to Interfaith Outreach and Community partners. Their needs are high, the suggest amount is $5/pt for beets, but gifts greater than that are very much appreciated. You may also put it in your regular giving envelope and mark it Beet Hunger.

Lighthouse Meets Virtually!

Our online Lighthouse meets Wednesday, Nov. 11 and will meet every-other week on Wednesday nights. Here are the times for each age group:

6:00-6:25PM Sailors (3 years - 2nd grade) 6:30 – 7:00PM Mariners (3rd - 5th grade) 7:15 – 7:45PM Navigators (6th-8th grade)

There are more Journal pages available for download on the church website. Contact Sue Megrund if you are not get-ting the emails with Zoom login information.

Online “Children’s Church” !

We understand that a longer online worship might not work for every family and every situation. That is why we will be coming to you with a 15-minute family-friendly worship ex-perience. You will find Pr. Jeff leading a lively song or two on guitar, a scripture reading, a short 5-minute message, pray-ers, and a “take-it-with-you” idea to help your children con-nect the message to their week. Our kid’s bulletin is also still available for you to print off and enjoy too! Check out our church website for the links each week, listed under “Kid’s Church”. We hope that these additional worship opportunities provide an enriching worship experience for you and your family dur-ing this time of social distancing and COVID-19.

Word for Women Update

Word for Women is up and running for fall with online Zoom meetings planned every other week at 9:30 am, new (and former) members are always welcome!

Pastor Jeff will lead the group this fall in two book studies. The group will read and discuss Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor during our Nov. 5 and 19 sessions. In the group’s Dec. 3 and 17 sessions, we’ll discuss Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible’s View of Women by Sarah Bessey. Members should obtain their own copies of the books from the library, a bookstore, or order online in order to participate.

Please contact Lisa Pole ([email protected]) or Bonnie Welshons ([email protected]) if you’d like to join and aren’t already on the email list.

West Suburban Grief Coalition News

The West Suburban Grief Group is continuing to meet during the pandemic. They hold their meetings by Zoom and have a speaker once a month. They intend to get back to the normal meetings once it is safe to do so. Call Alva Benson 763-545-1108.

Christmas Wreaths

Our Scout Troop 539 is selling Christmas wreaths this year. If you want to get a wreath, email the Scout Master, Virgil Stay, [email protected]

Tech Team Forming St. Barnabas is going to be video streaming our worship services soon. In addition to regular worship, we will have the option of recording weddings, funerals and other special services.

We are looking for people that would like to be part of this ministry. We are uncertain of how this will be organized, but we envision that the team will rotate responsibilities.

Our equipment is coming soon from EMI and once it is in-stalled they will train us on how to use it.

Contact the church office to be put on the interested list and you will be contacted with the specifics of the team.
