Christ appeared and greeted them, “Peace be with you.” As they realized that it was Jesus, their fears slowly vanished. They even rejoiced after having recognized that it was their Master and Lord who appeared to them. Jesus gave them a lasting gift: the Holy Spirit. From that time on, they experienced a total spiritual re-birth. He gave them the power that conquered their fears, doubts and anxieties. The Holy Spirit is indeed the dynamic force who transforms not only the Church but every human person. We have encoun- tered many people whose lives were “renewed” because of the Spirit. Their eyes were opened to realize their frailty and emptiness despite material fullness and satisfaction. They realized that giving up that fullness does not make them empty but contented and happy. Pentecost is not only the feast reminding us of the coming down of the Holy Spirit fifty days after the Resurrection. It is also the birthday of the Church. For it is the Spirit who is the driving force of the Church and every baptized Christian. The Spirit which Jesus gave as a lasting gift to the apostles is the same Spirit at work in our present time.

President of U.S. Bishops

Conference Responds to

Santa Fe High School

Shooting

May 18, 2018

Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the following statement in the aftermath of the Santa Fe High School shooting in Santa Fe,Texas:

"Our community and our local church joins an ever-growing list of those impacted by the evil of gun violence. I extend

my heartfelt prayers, along with my brother bishops, for all of those who have died, their

families and friends, those who were injured, and for our local community. Sadly, I must yet again point out the obvious

brokenness in our culture and society, such that children who went to school this morning to

learn and teachers who went to inspire them will not come

home. We as a nation must, here and now, say definitively: no more death! Our Lord is the Lord of life. May He be with us in our sorrow and show us how to honor the precious gift of life

and live in peace."
