HOLY WEEK Today, Palm Sunday, we begin the holiest week of the liturgical year. I encourage you to enter into the mystery of these days by attending the Masses and services of the Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and then Easter Sunday. Please see our Holy Week/Easter schedule on page 8. Please note the extra times for confessions this week, as making a good confession is the best way for us to prepare for Easter. This information is provided on our parish website at www.stmaryoldtown.org as well. As we traditionally welcome many visitors — Catholic and non-Catholic — to St. Mary’s during this holy season, included here are the guidelines for reception of Holy Communion:

GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION For Catholics: As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Communion devoutly and frequently. To be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and should have fasted for one hour. A person conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession, except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, canon 916). Frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For Our Fellow Christians: We welcome all of our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in that Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (John 17:21). Because Catholics believe the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (Canon 844, 4). Members of the Orthodox Catholic Church, the Assyrian Church of the East and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these churches (Canon 844, 3). For Those Not Receiving Communion: All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express, in their hearts, a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. For Non-Christians: We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and unity of the human family.

Living Faith A Reflection for April 9 — Palm Sunday

As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed

into service to carry His cross. Matthew 27:32

The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor

and help him “carry his cross”. These opportunities aren’t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like

helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs

before our own and not expecting anything in return.

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS TROOP 0325 American Heritage Girls (AHG) is a scouting and Catholic fellowship opportunity for girls, ages 5-18. AHG is a Christ-centered leadership and character development ministry focused on building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.
