Our Hospitals and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act)

If you or a friend are in Sarasota Memorial or Doctors Hospitals and are looking for spiritual care, there is a procedure you must follow due to the new laws that are now enforced.

If you are at Sarasota Memorial and wish Holy Communion or a visit by the Catholic chaplain you must:1. Dial 0 and ask for the Chaplain’s Office and request Communion.This chaplain is full-time at the

hospital and lives at St. Martha’s Parish. We pay a portion of his salary to ensure our Catholics are seen.2. If you are going to be there a few days, call the Parish Office and let us know. Father Michal or

Father Henry will then visit you. Both priests visit the hospitals once a week. The Chaplain visits every day. It is important to take the above steps, as there no longer is a Catholic parish list available to the priest.

3. The same is required at Doctors Hospital and Hospice.

The laws, though they seem strict, are for the privacy and protection of the hospital patient.

It is near the new concession stand (the highest building).

Remember and Honor Loved OnesThis Easter, we will have our beautiful 7-foot lily tree placed

behind the altar for all to see. It will add to the festive Easter decorations and celebration. This is a memorial tree, giving parishioners an opportunity to remember or honor a loved one by sponsoring a beautiful plant as well as all the Easter lilies and decorations in the church and chapel.

‘No hands but yours’During World War II, the story is told that a French village had been bombed by mistake.

When the villagers returned home, very little had been left undamaged. Refusing to be daunted, the people resolved to rebuild their little town.

While clearing away the rubble, they found pieces of white marble from a statue that had stood in the middle of town. The townspeople decided to rebuild the statue and commissioned the best sculptor they could find to handle the project.

When the statue was finally completed, it was unveiled amidst much fanfare. The statue turned out to be a figure of Christ...but it was missing its hands, which had been damaged beyond repair.

The villagers thought about it, and decided to change the inscription of the statue. No longer did it read, “Come unto Christ.” The statue now reminded them daily, “ I have no hands but yours.”

Meghan grew up in a nominally religious household. Her great-grandmother was Catholic, and she went to Catholic school, but her faith didn’t resonate with her for much of her life.

After getting married and having a daughter, she began to rethink her faith. One day, she randomly met a mother from our Mothers’ Circle group at a local Chick-fil-A. As they

began talking, this mother invited Meghan to join the group.

With the support of the Mothers’ Circle ministry, Meghan has “re-verted” back to her faith and has brought her family with her. Now she’s “paying it forward” by helping to create a caring and welcoming environment that will help connect people to Jesus Christ through faith, hope & love.

Dear Parish Family of Saint Thomas More,

People have asked me if I am ok and where have I been? To me, it is important that a retired pastor steps away and makes room for the new pastor. So, I have been doing just that. It is important that there is closure and a time to take the energy from my 14 years with you that has been infused into the parish and then connect to the new energy of Father Joe Clifford. God has a plan and it is for all of us to become better servants of Christ.

On a funny note, I am trying to stay low key, so I am going to Mass at different churches in the county so far, four. Last Sunday morning was really comical, with sun glasses on, jeans and a very casual shirt while walking across the parking lot at Incarnation this man looks at me and seriously says, “Sir, you have to go to St. Thomas More some weekend.” I said, “why?” He said, “You need to see how much you look like the pastor there.”

So often we react negatively to any change but I truly believe this change is great and it will add new thoughts and ideas to a growing parish. I am very happy to hear of Fr. Joe Clifford’s appointment - his positive reputation precedes him. I am anxious to help him wherever he wants and I feel assured that the wonderful spirit of St. Thomas More will continue on.

I will try in April to send individual thank you notes, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone! I had no idea how I had touched so many people. The letters and notes sent have been just incredible. The men and women who helped to restore my home, the many who packed me and moved me and unpacked me is incredible. Also, the naming of the Spirit Center after me is humbling but also awesome. I walked by it for a week and never noticed it!!!

Holy Communion in the HandsCommunion in the hands, the original way the early Church receive

for several centuries, is the preferred and most hygienic way to receive,

“Make a throne of your hands to receive your King.” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem 348 A.D.) Grabbing the host with 2 fingers or placing your hands side by side so the Host could fall through is not appropriate. One hand should be UNDER the other to take the Host and place it in your mouth.

The correct response is, “Amen!” (Translation: So be it!) when the minister says, “The Body of Christ.”

Profound bows (from the waist) and genuflecting before communion are not designated in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). Both can cause accidents. People have tripped over those genuflecting in the Communion line.

Intinction (dipping the Sacred Host into the Precious Blood) is permitted ONLY by a priest or deacon.
