St. Lawrence the Martyr Church SUNDAY, JULY 2, 2017
MISSION STATEMENT St. Lawrence the Martyr Church is a community of Catholic Christians who gather
together to celebrate the Eucharist, their love of Jesus Christ and their love of one another
as children of Christ. We are a diverse community focused on creating an enthusiasm for our faith and enriching the lives for all who come to worship in our parish. Inviting and
welcoming liturgies, multiple youth and young adult activities and adult enrichment
programs all help make the Word of Christ a living reality at St. Lawrence.

BECOMING A PRIEST With the ordination of Deacon Sylwester taking place this weekend, I thought that it would be good to write
about the sacrament of Holy Orders. I took the following notes from The Catechism of the Catholic Church.
• Jesus was sent into the world to save humankind from our sins and to lead us to heaven. For this purpose,
Jesus was consecrated by the Father and given an apostolic mission.
• To continue His work on earth, Jesus called the Apostles, consecrated them and entrusted to them His sav-
ing work.
• The Apostles entrusted this mission to three groups of successors, to the Order of Bishops, the Order of
Priests and the Order of Deacons. Bishops, priests and deacons share in this mission in different degrees.
• Men become participants in these Holy Orders through ordination, which means incorporation into an or-
der or group. In the liturgy of ordination, the Holy Spirit anoints the priest.
• Bishops and priests share in the consecration of Christ the High Priest and in His mission. Priests are
coworkers with the bishops in the apostolic mission.
• Bishops and priests are called to build up, sanctify (make holy), and lead the Church. The lives of the
bishop and priest are directed to serving the Church in these three ways.
• In the Eucharist, priests and bishops exercise to a supreme degree their sacred office.
• Priests always exercise their ministries in subordination and obedience to the bishop.
• A bishop and his priests together form a unique priestly college. Priests are expected to work with the
bishop and represent the bishop.
Two of the great “powers” entrusted to the priest are the forgiveness of sins and the consecration of bread and
wine. Not even our Blessed Mother or the angels can forgive sins or confect the Eucharist. The calling to
priesthood is a tremendous calling. The greatness of this calling humbles the priest and fills him with awe at
God’s mercy and trust in him. Please pray for Father Sylwester and all priests as they continue the saving mis-
sion of Christ, the High Priest!
PRAYER IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Service Committee of the Diocese of Paterson is planning monthly prayer meetings for all those who wish
to gather and pray in the Holy Spirit and who wish to learn more about “Life in the Holy Spirit.” St. Paul’s
Inside the Walls Evangelization Center in Madison is not able to accommodate the prayer meetings during this
summer so they will be held in our parish chapel on July 10 and August 14 at 7:30 pm. You are most wel-
come to join us for this form of prayer that brings us the joy and strength of the Holy Spirit!

SUMMER BIBLE STUDY
Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance
There has been a day change for the evening session of
the summer bible study. We will be meeting on Tuesday
evening starting July 11 at 7:30 pm. Fr. Nick has asked for the change. The AM session will remain on Tuesday
morning after the 8:00 am Mass. Books will be available
at the first meeting and are $20. Books are also available in the Parish Office for anyone wanting to get a head
start. It is important that you give a working email ad-
dress when you purchase a book so that the link to the online videos can be sent to you. Join us as we discover
that the words of St. Paul are as important today as they
were in the 1st Century. All are welcome!

THE 7 “UPS”
1) Wake Up!
Decide to have a good day.
“Today is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and
be glad in it.”
Psalms 118:24
2) Dress Up! The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is
an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
“The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man
looks at outward appearance; but the Lord looks at the
heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
3) Shut Up! Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice
as much listening as talking.
“He who guards his lips guards his soul.”
Proverbs 13:3
4) Stand Up! For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will
fall for anything.
“Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper
time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. There-
fore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…”
Galatians 6:9-10
5) Look Up!
To the Lord.
“I can do everything through Christ who strengthens
me.”
Philippians 4:13
6) Reach Up!
For something higher.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge
Him and He will direct your path.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
7) Lift Up!
Your prayers.
“Do not worry about anything; instead pray about every-
thing.”
Philippians 4:6
HELP NEEDED TO HOST HOMELESS FAMILIES
IN FAMILY PROMISE PROGRAM The families enrolled at Family Promise of Morris Coun-
ty will be staying at Grace House of Mendham Hills Con-
gregational Church July 23-30. Volunteers are needed to provide meals or dessert, host the families or set up and
clean up. Two adults are needed for each shift (families
can volunteer, but at least 2 adults must be present). Shifts can potentially be divided up.
Volunteers from St. Lawrence Church helped in the past years to host them. This is a great opportunity to help
homeless families of Morris County. For information or
to sign up, contact Beatrice Basso at (973) 294-4059.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beautiful story of the woman prom-
ised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in
Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embar-
rassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings
offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be
cause for rejoicing and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be en-
joyed and shared generously with others.
Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic
instruction received by candidates for baptism at the
Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core be-
lief and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story
about something that He underwent once upon a time, but
it is our story, the story of how we joined the other mem-bers of the one Body of Christ, the Church. We were not
only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but
raised to eternal life with Christ.

A word from Fr. Nick: “I once again thank you for your con-
tinued generosity to God and to the mission of our parish.
Your offerings make so much possible!”
A testimony from a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great
Church in South Euclid, Ohio: “ . . . but tithing doesn’t mean
we have to give up what we have. It’s about giving enough.
The vocabulary of our faith invites us to the table at every Mass
for a spiritual meal; this church is our house, and the people in
front of and behind us are not just familiar faces. They are the
family with whom we share our gifts. Tithing isn’t painful. It
is our joy to know that we are supporting our house, a house
given to us, without conditions, without strings other than that
we care for it. We are not asked to give up anything, but to
share with God what He shares with us.”
