The Twelfth Day of Christmas “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a popular song most of us have heard many times before.

Traditionally, the feast of Epiphany was the twelfth day after Christmas, or January 6th, and traditionally, for

many people, it marked the end of the Christmas season and celebrations. On that day, many people would

take down their decorations. Christmas vacation would end for school children. People would prepare to

enter the bleakness of the long winter season. However, the celebration of Epiphany should really perk us up

and remind us of what we celebrated just a few days ago.

What does the word Epiphany mean anyway? People of faith say it means, “Appearance of Jesus as

Messiah,” not just another person, but as the one long awaited. It also means, in a more general sense,

manifestation or showing. Today we celebrate the event in which Jesus was shown to the world, particularly the non-Jewish world, for the first time. The three wise men represent the Gentile world. A baby was born

into the world and the three astrologers went to see this baby. Certainly, babies are born every day all over

the world, but there was something special about this baby. This baby was both human and divine. This

baby came into the world for the whole world. Each gift given by the wise men is symbolic and tells us

something about this newborn infant.

The gold symbolized the royalty of Jesus. It tells us that He will have a kingdom, not consisting of

armies and palaces, but one built on love and peace. The frankincense symbolizes adoration and prayer, as

does incense today. When we pray to the Father, we ask Jesus to bring to Him our petitions. Our prayers rise

like incense to the Lord. The myrrh symbolizes the death and burial that one day will be a part of Jesus’

earthly existence.

For today’s feast of the Epiphany, blessed chalk is available in the narthex. You are invited to place a

piece of chalk home with you and mark your doorway with the following inscription: “20 + C + M + B + 20.”

The C-M-B are the initials of the legendary names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar. It also stands for Christus Mansionem Benedicat: May Christ bless this dwelling place. As you mark your doorway, the

presiding member of the household prays: “May all who come to our house this year (hence, the 20-20 in the

inscription) rejoice to find Christ living among us. May we seek and serve in everyone we meet, Jesus, Who is

Lord forever and ever. Amen.”

Send Your Prayer Intentions with Fr. David on His Pilgrimage to Prague On January 8 I will be making a pilgrimage to Prague, Czech Republic, to visit Our Lady of Victory Church. It is there that the original statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague statue is kept. I will be celebrating Mass there and would like to invite you to write below any petitions you would like me to pray for during the Mass. Please write your petitions on the lines below and put them in an envelope marked “Prague Pilgrimage.” If you wish to not have me see the petitions, please write “Prague Pilgrimage - Confidential” on the envelope. I will not open any envelopes marked “Confidential” but will bring them with me and place them on the altar with the others. You may place your envelopes in the collection basket or drop them off at the Ministry Center. I will need to have all the petitions in my possession by Tuesday, January 7. Please pray for me during this time and all of you will be prayed for as well. Thank you! Fr. We Make House Calls! —Communion for the Homebound—

If you or a loved one are temporarily or permanently homebound and unable to attend Mass, the St. James Ministry of Care can bring Holy Communion to your home on a regular basis. To have a qualified and trained St. James lay parishioner bring Communion to YOUR home, please call the St. James Ministry Center at 630-469-7540.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

The Art and Environment Committee would like to thank the over many volunteer men, women and children who helped transform the church environment this holy season. We accomplished this transformation in record time! In addition we’d like to thank all those who stayed after coffee and donuts earlier in the month to help put the trees together. We are so very grateful for everyone’s help. May the Lord bless you this Christmas season.

Thanks to Our Liturgical Ministers!

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of our liturgical ministers who gave generously of your service this Christmas! Your gifts of time and commitment are crucial to the positive experience of liturgy offered at our parish. It takes many of us working together to create this beautiful experience of God's love at Mass. You truly do make a difference. Thank you!

Travelers

The Magi brought gifts with them. Although King Herod was greatly troubled, Jesus and his parents did not fear these travelers. God was with them all. And God is with us and everyone even to this day. • Whom do I fear? • How can I be like Jesus and his parents and the

Magi to accept everyone? • What will I do to assure pathways of peace for

migrants, travelers, refugees, and aliens?

We are blessed to have you with us today—and every weekend! Our liturgies are enhanced by your presence and participation. We hope that you find the experience here at St. James to include a warm and inspiring celebration of the Eucharist and the faith that we profess.

Welcome to St. James!

Please Support Our Advertisers

Our Sunday bulletin is one of the primary ways we communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J. S. Paluch Company, the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers—many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. We ask you to consider patronizing these businesses and when you do, take a moment to tell the owner that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin. Thanks!
