“DISCOVER THE ONE THING NECESSARY”
OUR PARISH LENTEN MISSION: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20
In years past, almost all parishes would have a parish mission. In fact, we had a
parish mission for families back in 2014. This year, we are planning a parish
mission to be held shortly before Lent. Our presenter is Andre Lesperance of
Evangelical Catholic and the theme of the mission night is, “Discover the one
thing necessary.” Our theme comes from the story of the visit of Jesus to home
of His friends in Bethany, Martha and Mary. You may recall the story of where
Martha is busy with matters of hospitality during the visit of Jesus to their home.
Martha complains to Jesus that Mary is not helping with the chores and Jesus re-
sponds, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There
is only one thing necessary. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be
taken away from her.”
Plan to join us for our one night mission that will set the tone for our Lent 2019 at St. Lawrence the Martyr
Church. Come consider with us what Jesus calls “the one thing necessary.” Please mark this date on your
calendars so that you may join us for this mission that will set the stage for our parish for Lent 2019! Free
childcare will be provided.
OUR PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND
A brief update on our pilgrimage to Poland in May 2019 (May 13 to 20). To date 15 people have sent in
their deposits. More are expected to join the pilgrimage. Anne Breslin of Great Experiences Tours has as-
sured us that they will definitely operate this pilgrimage. There is still space to join us although there is a
limit to how many be part. Brochures are available in the church and in the Parish Center.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
This past Tuesday, I received a call from Chris Bell of Good Counsel Homes. To date, they have received
$7572 in donations from our parish and they expect that they will receive other donations by mail. Chris and
Emiliano Bell and all at Good Counsel are most grateful and I am, too, for your help. Your donations help
mothers and children and are saving the lives of children who might otherwise be killed by abortions when
the mothers have nowhere else to turn for help.
In addition, close to $6000 was donated at Christmas in the door collection for goats for our sister parishes in
Haiti. At $50 per goat, we are helping about 120 families to have a source of milk for their families! Thank
you and God bless you!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
February 17-March 3
First Congregational Church of Chester (FCCC) will
host homeless families of Morris County enrolled in
the Family Promise Program.
FCCC is a small congregation and they need support
from St. Lawrence parish, especially since this time they
host the families for two weeks.
St. Lawrence Church supports this effort with volunteers
to:
• Set up facility for the families
• Clean up daily
• Provide dessert and/or dinner
• Host guests for one shift (sitting in the common
room, being available, helping kids with homework,
playing with them)
• Stay overnight
This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals or fami-
lies to get involved. If you are doing this for the first
time, training is available (not required, but helpful). If
you are interested in helping, please contact Beatrice
Basso at 973-294-4059.

TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING.
Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider
tithing and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to
the parish, 5% to God’s other charities) in gratitude. The
spiritual practice of tithing disposes us to make God first
in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the
tithe, but the tither. Not the gift, but the giver — for God!
Tithing Income January 13, 2019 $10,776.00
Tithing Income January 14, 2018 $11,689.00
Reflection: “To each individual the manifestation of the
Spirit is given for some benefit.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)
St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a rea-
son. How has God blessed you? Are you using your gifts
according to God’s plan? How are you helping to build
God’s kingdom here on earth? Remember that if you
don’t do the work God planned for you, no one else can
do it. Live the life God has intended for you, feel His
love, peace and joy!
From Father Nick: “I thank you sincerely for your gen-
erosity in the collections and I pray that God will bless
and reward you for all that you do for His Church and for
those in need.”
Testimony from a Parishioner of Our Lady of Gua-
dalupe Parish, Buckingham, PA: “Thank you for mak-
ing our parish a tithing parish. It gives me great pleasure
to share the blessings that the Lord has bestowed on us. It
removes the question of ‘How much do I give this
week?’ I feel truly blessed to be a member of this parish
and look forward to all that is to come.”
A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we
can actually show them something, demonstrate what we
mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human un-
derstanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People
want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us
Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world.
During these past weeks, we have seen how Jesus was
revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi and
then began His adult “public life” at His baptism by John.
Today’s Gospel reading tells us of His “first sign,”
providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana.
Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always
easily understood in His own day, nor is He even now.
So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and sim-
plicity of His birth, His humility and openness before
John the Baptist, His kindness and compassion toward
people in their ordinary problems, such as running short
of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus
that we come to know God.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride,
so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5).
Psalm — Proclaim His marvelous deeds to all the nations
(Psalm 96).
Second Reading — All the varied gifts in the Christian
community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
Gospel — Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana,
Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11).
