2 THE B APTISM OF OUR LORD

Welcome to Worship at St. Paul’s!!

The community of believers at St. Paul Lutheran Church takes delight in having guests inits worship. Our congregation strives to present a witness to Christ that is faithful to the Word of

Holy Scripture and to the confessional heritage of the Lutheran tradition.

GUESTS:  We encourage you to sign a “visitor” card located in the pews and our Guest Booklocated in the hall outside the worship space.

HOLY COMMUNION IS OFFERED by invitation of the Lord himself. Access to the Lord’s Tableis by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the

celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usherand returning along the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may comeforward with their arms crossed and receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receivethe wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicantstill receives the whole Christ.

TO THE PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN—Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!

Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on in worship. They tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads.

Quietly and kindly explain the parts of the Liturgy and actions of the worship leaders. Share the worship folder with them at eye level.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.

If you have to leave worship with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus said“Let the children come to me.”

Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the

Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship.

Please let your child use this worship folder to draw and doodle.

The presence of children is a gift to the Church. Please welcome children and give a smile ofencouragement to their families.

HOLY COMMUNION THE B APTISM OF OUR LORD

Installation of Congregation CouncilSunday, January 11, 2015 + 9:30 a.m.

BAPTIZED IN WATER Our re-creation in baptism is an image of the Genesis creation, where the Spirit moved over thewaters. Both Mark's Gospel and the story in Acts make clear that it is the Spirit's movement thatdistinguishes Jesus’ baptism from John's. The Spirit has come upon us as upon Jesus and the

Ephesians, calling us God’s beloved children and setting us on Jesus’ mission to re-create the world.

The Liturgy (which means “the work of the people”) involves participation. The texts marked in plaintext are spoken by the worship leaders while the assembly responds with bold  text.

8 THE B APTISM OF OUR LORD

The PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated.

LITURGY OF THE  W ORD The FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-5Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the primeval darkness, God brings light. This familiar storywas good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news

for any person living in the chaos and darkness of despair. God created and continues to create newlife. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was aformless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from Godswept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light fromthe darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. Andthere was evening and there was morning, the first day.

The reading concludes:The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The PSALMODY Psalm 29 After introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. The assemblysings the refrain after each verse.

Give to the Lord, you sons of God,

give to the Lord glory and praise, give to the Lord the glory due his name:adore the Lord in holy attire Refrain

The voice of the Lord is over the waters,the Lord, over vast waters.The voice of the Lord is mighty;

The voice of the Lord is majestic. Refrain

THE B APTISM OF OUR LORD  9

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, “Glory!”The Lord is enthroned above the flood;the Lord is enthroned as king forever. Refrain

The SECOND READING Acts 19:1-7In Ephesus, Paul encounters people who had received John's baptism of repentance but had neverheard of the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After Paul baptized them, the Holy Spiritcame upon them and empowered them with gifts of the Spirit.

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and cameto Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, "Did you receive theHoly Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not evenheard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3Then he said, "Into what then were youbaptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." 4Paul said, "John baptized withthe baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was tocome after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the nameof the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit cameupon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied — 7altogether there were

about twelve of them. The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel as it is proclaimed in the midst of the assembly.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11

Mark's gospel reports the story of Jesus' baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spiritdescends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit.

The Lord be with you.

 And also with you.

10 THE B APTISM OF OUR LORD

The Holy +1 Gospel according to Mark.Glory to you, O Lord.

4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of

repentance for the forgiveness of sins.5

And people from the whole Judeancountryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and werebaptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wildhoney. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me;I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I havebaptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

9

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw theheavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voicecame from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

The reading concludes:

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

The assembly is seated after the procession returns to its place.
