Instead, they advance an agenda that considerably injures the middle class. We need an active partner ready to help pass a budget that looks out for the middle class families and those who are struggling.” Recently, Hernandez criticized Rauner’s need to approach the financial challenges facing Illinois “like a business.” “Illinois isn’t just a business. It is a society that consists of people who not only contribute money for services but who need those services to different degrees. In other words, Illinois isn’t just a business built on finances. It is a family focused entity that provides services to every person in this state. We cannot lose sight of those needs as we address the state’s challenges,” stated Hernandez. Rep. Hernandez touched upon the Department of Human Services Welcoming Center, located in North Riverside, being shut down leaving thousands of people without basic to critical services that include medical, domestic violence, and childcare. “Governor Rauner has focused solely on cuts, which is a ‘business approach,’ but many of those ‘cuts’ target and harm middle class families, for example, like cutting medical care for the elderly and the disabled and funding for necessary emergency shelters/homes for families and children.” Hernandez went on to further state; spending cuts need to be part of the process. We need to take steps to make sure state agencies are living within their means, but we cannot cripple those services or make them ineffective. Good “business” practices are important, but we need to keep in mind we are dealing with the needs of people, not just statistics and numbers. State Representative Lisa Hernandez represents the 24 th Illinois House District, which includes parts of Berwyn, Brookfield, Cicero, and Riverside. Loretto Hospital Partners with Illinois Eye Institute Introduced earlier this year, the Illinois Eye Institute (IEI), under the leadership of Dr. Dominick L. Opitz, associate professor of optometry, conducted a weekly eye clinic at Loretto Hospital to provide specialized eye care diagnosis and treatment to patients with mild-to-serious eye conditions. Dr. Opitz’s arrival could not have been timelier with the recent accomplishment of Loretto’s Senior Ophthalmologist Dr. Mark J. Benjamin, who advanced to the forefront in cataract surgery when he performed the hospital’s first dropless cataract procedure last year, and was the first to utilize the new dropless cataract technology in Illinois, according to Imprimis Pharmaceuticals, the San Diego, CA, company that formulated the medication. When asked about bringing his expertise to Loretto, Dr. Opitz said: “I’m really excited about this [partnership]. There is definitely a need for these types of eye care services in underserved communities like Austin. So, it’s really about providing excellent care and access to quality health care regardless of one’s ability to pay.” For more information about Loretto Hospital’s Eye Clinic call 773-854-5306.

Hernandez: State Needs More than ‘Business Approach’

Edited by Lawndale News

State Representative Lisa Hernandez has a message for Governor Bruce Rauner. “Governor Rauner’s reforms do not apply to the budget. Instead, they advance an agenda that considerably injures the middle class. We need an active partner ready to help

pass a budget that looks out for the middle class families and those who are struggling.” Recently, Hernandez criticized Rauner’s need to approach the financial challenges facing Illinois “like a business.” “Illinois isn’t just a business. Noah’s Arc Foundation Unveils New “Rock Your Drop” PSA

On Saturday, Aug. 1st, Noah’s Arc Foundation (NAF) launched its latest public service announcement (PSA), entitled “Rock Your Drop,” at the Major Adams Community Committee

Center (MACC). “’Rock Your Drop’ is based on the Drop of Consciousness movement we launched last March,” said Cecilia Rodhe, co-founder and president of NAF. “It’s symbol, a teardrop,

represents the scars and strength of those affected by violence, and wearing it demonstrates that you are committed to creating peace, unity and positive change.” The PSA campaign

asks athletes, celebrities, musicians, activists and kids why they choose to rock their Drops. Answers such as: the youth, Chicago, positivity, consciousness and an end to gun violence were voiced. Through this campaign, Noah’s Arc Foundation wants the public to think about the

positive things in their own lives that would compel them to join this movement for peace. “Wearing the Drop means something, it’s a commitment to peace and a promise to spread the message,” said Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls center and co-founder and chairman of NAF. “When

you wear it, you show the world that violence is our problem – it’s not just a south side or a west side issue, it belongs to us all.” To view the PSA and learn more about the Drop of Consciousness movement, please visit www.rockyourdrop.com.

Comcast Doubling Internet Essentials’ Speed and Providing WiFi Routers to Participants Comcast announced that it is doubling the download speed of its Internet Essentials program, the company’s broadband service for low-income families, and will begin providing in-home WiFi service, including a WiFi router, at no additional cost. Internet Essentials was created to provide

easier access to the Internet and close the digital divide that separates communities into information haves- and have-nots, based on socio-economic conditions. Internet Essentials has been available in Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region (Central and Northern IL, NW Indiana and SW Michigan) and across

the company’s entire service area since 2011. Internet Essentials will increase speed to 10 Mbps downstream, giving program participants free WiFi routers they can use to extend the Internet service in their homes and connect more devices. To get the router, participants need to call 1-855-8-INTERNET.

To receive the faster Internet speed, customers simply need to reboot their cable modems. Existing customers who would like a WiFi router just need to call the dedicated call center and either request to have one shipped to them for free, or they can schedule a professional installation, also for no

additional cost. New customers will have the

option to receive a WiFi router when they sign up.

“No

The Descendants of DisneyBy: Nikoleta Morales

It is often said that parenting is the toughest job in the world and it is very well so. This also stands true in Disney’s new movie “Descendants” where some of Disney’s favorite villains (Maleficent, Evil Queen, Cruella de Vill and Jafar) prepare their kids in the Isle of the Lost to take over Auradon with their evil ruling. Their kids are allowed to study college in Auradon but their main focus is to help Maleficent by stealing Fairy Godmother’s magic wand. Even though there is a saying that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, this apple might very well be sweet on the inside. Maleficent’s daughter Mal is a perfect example of that! Her mom’s dream to help her rule over and destroy might be challenged by her daughter’s sweet side. Mal falls deeply in love with Beauty and the Beast’s son Prince Ben from Auradon who shows her that everyone has a choice

to make in life. If you thought that you have seen it all and that Disney can’t surprise you with something new, “Descendants” will challenge that view. It is by far one of the most creative and interesting twists of the fairy tales we have seen so far and it’s worth to be seen by all parents and children alike. Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson star as the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains, in Disney’s “Descendants,” a live-action movie that – with a knowing wink at traditional fairy tales –fuses castles with classrooms to create a contemporary, music-driven story about the challenges in living up to parental and peer expectations. Made for kids, tweens and families, the movie is directed, execu t ive -produced and choreographed by Emmy Award-winning Kenny Ortega. Gov. Rauner Signs Bill to Improve Achievement Gaps

A second legislative bill was signed yesterday by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner--introduced and passed on behalf of the Vision 20/20 group--ensuring a balanced accountability measure focusing on continuous improvement, recognizing the diversity of struggling schools and aimed at

eliminating achievement gaps across the state. The model adopted under HB2683 (now Public Act 99-193) allows local flexibility, promote shared accountability, and is sensitive to local district improvements. The passage of this bill marks the second legislative victory for a

collective group known as Vision 20/20. The group consists of the four largest education associations in Illinois along with the Regional Offices of Education (ROE’s) and the Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Demographics and Diversity (SCSDD). Just last week, the governor

signed a bill (HB 2657/PA 99-58) designed to streamline the licensure process for teachers and administrators and establish reciprocity with other states in order to increase the pool of qualified candidates for positions in Illinois. The Illinois Balanced Accountability Measure (IBAM) implements an accountability model for schools that in addition to using standardized test scores also provides flexibility for school districts to use an evidence-based framework to demonstrate student improvement and growth. The group worked with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in arriving at the final agreed-upon language. For more information, please visit http://illinoisvision2020.org
