Welcome to the Community Band of Brevard’s Winter Concert. In today’s program you will hear an eclectic set of selections including both seasonal and non-seasonal compositions. Some of them are very familiar to most people—in particular ‘Twas the Night before Christmas, which will be narrated by Sue Diebel—and some will probably be heard for the first time by most of you, such as Fantasia on Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair, which features Jeff Vickers and Kyle Leve on alto saxophone, and Kitty Colman on flute. I hope that you will enjoy the variety of music that this concert provides, and I thank you for supporting the Band and attending our concert. From all of us in the Community Band of Brevard, we wish for you a very happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you again at our March 15, 2015 concert, “Duty, Honor, Country: A Tribute To Our Armed Forces.” David E. Scarborough Chairman, The Community Band of Brevard

Overture to a Winter Festival (James Curnow) Overture to a Winter Festival is a bright and energetic concert overture based on traditional Winter and Christmas themes. If you listen closely, you will hear fanfares and traditional carols. As excitement builds toward the Winter holidays, the music also builds to herald the beginning of a very exciting musical festival to follow.

Overture to a Winter Celebration (Arr. James M. Stephenson) This flashy overture (originally commissioned by the USAF Band of Liberty, Captain David A. Alpar, Commander and Conductor) captures the holiday spirit and unleashes it all over again with fresh harmonies and punctuating rhythms. Whether through the contrapuntal Il Est Né, Le Divin Enfant, the organic and explosive Pat-A-Pan, or the spiky Good King Wenceslas, this medley is intended to fill the air with Christmas joy for players and audiences alike.

Prelude on a Hymn of Praise (James Curnow) Based on Conrad Kocher’s (1838) majestic hymn tune Dix, this brief prelude features a pastorale setting of two verses. A graceful original melody based on the hymn tune is intertwined with the tune, creating a peaceful interpretation of the words of this hymn.

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Johann Sebastian Bach) Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is based on a famous melody by Johann Schöp. This ever-popular chorale occurs at the end of Bach's Cantata No. 147-Be Thou Cheerful, O My Spirit. Undoubtedly, the Bach name is the greatest in the history of music. The Bach family provided the world with seven generations of musicians between 1560 and 1800. Johann Sebastian Bach was a member of the 4th generation and, with approximately 200 musical ancestors, could reasonably be expected to have some degree of musical talent. Indeed, Bach's father taught him to play violin at a young age. By the time he was 10 years old, both of his parents were dead. After the death of his parents, Bach was cared for by his older brother, an organist who studied with Pachelbel. The older brother taught Bach some keyboard basics, but was so jealous of his rapid progress that Johann Sebastian had to secretly pursue self-instruction. By age 15, Bach was free from his brother's domination, and he involved himself with full-time study of music. At age 18 he accepted a position as an organist but devoted most of his time to composition. With two wives he sired a total of 20 children, several of whom became musicians of note. In 1723, Bach became cantor and music director of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, a position he held until his death.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (Clement Moor/Arr. Newell H. Long) Written 180 years ago by a theologian and biblical scholar, there are few who do not know Clement Clark Moore’s take of the mysterious Christmas Eve visitor. This beloved Christmas poem is given the ultimate treatment with the addition of this remarkable orchestration. This piece includes numerous solos and masterful scoring to provide a most fitting framework for this treasured poem.

Nabucco Overture (Giuseppe Verdi/Arr. Franco Cesarini) The opera Nabuccodonosor (in short: Nabucco), composed in 1842, was so successful, that the composer Giuseppe Verdi (1831-1901) was overwhelmed from that moment on, with commissions for new operas. In the case of Nabucco, Verdi didn’t at first want to compose an overture at all, and it was due to the insistence of his brother-in-law that the overture actually got written. The famous hymn-like melody of the slave chorus forms the middle section of the overture. And it is due to this striking theme that the overture has enjoyed unprecendented popularity.

A Christmas Carol Fantasy (Arr. Takashi Hoshide) This festive and joyful arrangement brings the spirit of the holiday season to musical life. Takashi Hoshide skillfully weaves such seasonal favorites as O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World, The First Noel, Deck the Halls, Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, O Tannenbaum, and O Little Town of Bethlehem, into a beautiful tapestry of sound.

Fantasia for Christmas (Elliot Del Borgo) This piece is a marvelous fantasia on the familiar Ukranian Bell Carol, one of the most enchanting of all holiday melodies. From its quiet opening through its grand and sweeping cascades of sound, this very familiar seasonal carol experiences a complete and powerful transformation. The use of brilliant metal percussion complements the massive peaks of sound from the winds.

Fantasia (on Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair) (Mark Camphouse) Most folk songs tell a story and provide the listener with a lyrical expression of a mood through various images and symbols. “Black is the Color” possesses an abundance of those qualities. It has always been a special folk song to Camphouse as some of his earliest recollections of singing while in elementary school were of this wonderfully evocative song. In his Fantasia, he has incorporated two versions of Black is the Color: one of English origin and the other more characteristically American (Appalachian) in flavor. While tempting for a composer to commemorate the Centennial of any organization through a customary fanfare-like work, Camphouse felt that something more intimate and

Program Notes — Winter Concert (cont.) lyrical, a celebration through the use of folk song, might prove more effective and unique for the Asheboro City Schools Centennial.

The Eighth Candle (Steve Reisteter) Alluding to the story of Hanukkah, this work begins with an extended hymn-like section followed by an exciting dance of celebration. The feast commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian-Greek tyrant Antiochus over 2,180 years ago. Legend has it that after the battles were won there was only enough oil for the ceremonial lights to last for one day, yet by some miracle the oil lasted for eight days. Hanukkah is celebrated by the family in the home, rather than in the synagogue. In modern times candles are lit, one for each day of the holiday, prayers are recited, then the feast and merrymaking begin. Steve Reisteter is a contemporary American musician and composer from the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. from www.palatineconcertband.org (Palatine Concert Band)

A Christmas Festival (Leroy Anderson) In A Christmas Festival Anderson includes the following familiar carols: Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Good King Wenceslas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, The First Nowell, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, and O Come, All Ye Faithful.

A Stars and Stripes for Christmas (John Philip Sousa/Robert E. Foster) Jingle Bells, Hallelujah Chorus, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, and Angels We Have Heard On High are intertwined with The Stars And Stripes Forever in such an ingenious way, every time the melody changes you have to laugh! We think even John Philip Sousa himself would have enjoyed this, and we guarantee that you will too.
