CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON
Sunday Bulletin – 22nd December 2019
4th Sunday in Advent
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services.
There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites,
Christmas is upon us and today we light the fourth Advent candle. In two days’ time we light the Christ candle which will be lit firstly at midnight on Tuesday and then on Wednesday.
This morning we will be looking at the role the shepherds played in the Christmas drama. My experience of this has been enriched enormously having read Norah Lofts’ novel entitled “How far to Bethlehem”. No doubt she uses poetic license, but she adds various human factors of the Christmas drama. It is worth a read.
Tonight is our wonderful Carols and Lessons service at 7 pm. We welcome Nigel Weeks and the Nelson Brass Band along with Lesley Bandy’s team of dancers. Thank you to our supper team so that the evening finishes on a wonderful high. The choir has been working very diligently in preparation for these grand occasion services.
It was wonderful to be part of the bible reading on the Cathedral steps last Sat-urday. Apparently at 3 pm as the passage in Acts regarding Pentecost was read, there was a fire in the bush nearby the steps. The fire brigade was called so it added to some wonderful drama. It was Sean and the Gideons who orchestrated the New Testament reading.
Congratulations to Mary and Peter Toll, Arthur and Margaret Middleton and Bruce and Sally Astridge as they celebrate 60 years of marriage. May they all have a fantastic celebration.
My plan is to keep the Cathedral open all night on New Year’s eve and to even have a barbeque going so people can have a bit of solid with any liquid they might have downed!! It is an appropriate occasion to come and spend time in the Cathedral as we pray in the New Year and give God thanks for the previous year.
Don’t forget the flower festival from Feb.13th to Feb.16th here in the Cathedral. There may be some folk today who may offer to present a vase of flowers in memory of a loved one which they will arrange with much love and care and passion. So far we have about 30 folk making various floral arrangements. I am looking forward to seeing the floral carpet especially created for the occasion by Rosemary Bygate and the AAW.
We had a goodly number at the volunteer’s barbeque at the Deanery last Thursday.

HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE: Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or
associated symptoms are advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the wafer
or using the “Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit juice al-
ternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an
important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety
requirements. 2
We have a wonderful band of volunteers who keep this Cathedral going day by day by day. Thank you all so much for exercising your God given ministries. It was lovely to have a choir celebration at Una and Hamish Hilton’s place on Friday night. It has been wonderful to watch the growth especially of the junior chorale.
Have a great weekend and Christmas week.

Isaiah 7:10-16
10 Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz,
saying, 11 Ask a sign of the LORD your
God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as
heaven. 12 But Ahaz said, I will not
ask, and I will not put the LORD to the
test. 13 Then Isaiah said: “Hear then,
O house of David! Is it too little for you
to weary mortals, that you weary my
God also? 14 Therefore the Lord
himself will give you a sign. Look, the
young woman is with child and shall
bear a son, and shall name him
Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and
honey by the time he knows how to
refuse the evil and choose the
good. 16 For before the child knows
how to refuse the evil and choose the
good, the land before whose two kings
you are in dread will be deserted.

The Sentence and Collects for the 4th Sunday in Advent
Sentence When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So, they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. Luke 2:15, 16
Collect Son of God, Child of Mary, born in a stable yet worshipped by the shepherds, be born in us this day that through us the world may know the wonder of Your love. Amen.

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ,
called to be an apostle, set apart for
the gospel of God, 2 which he
promised beforehand through his
prophets in the holy scriptures, 3 the
gospel concerning his Son, who was
descended from David according to
the flesh 4 and was declared to be Son
of God with power according to the
spirit of holiness by resurrection from
the dead, Jesus Christ our
Lord, 5 through whom we have
received grace and apostleship to
bring about the obedience of faith
among all the Gentiles for the sake of
his name, 6 including yourselves who
are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all God’s beloved in Rome, who
are called to be saints: Grace to you
and peace from God our Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 In that region there were shepherds
living in the fields, keeping watch over
their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of
the Lord stood before them, and the
glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were terrified. 10 But the
angel said to them, “Do not be afraid;
for see—I am bringing you good news
of great joy for all the people: 11 to you
is born this day in the city of David a
Saviour, who is the Messiah, the
Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you
will find a child wrapped in bands of
cloth and lying in a manger.” 13 And
suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host,
praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to
God in the highest heaven, and on
earth peace among those whom he
favours!” 15 When the angels had left
them and gone into heaven, the
shepherds said to one another, “Let
us go now to Bethlehem and see this
thing that has taken place, which the
Lord has made known to us.” 16 So
they went with haste and found Mary
and Joseph, and the child lying in the
manger. 17 When they saw this, they
made known what had been told them
about this child; 18 and all who heard it
were amazed at what the shepherds
told them. 19 But Mary treasured all
these words and pondered them in
her heart. 20 The shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all they
had heard and seen, as it had been
told them.
