Fundamentals of Fire SafetyFundamentals of Fire SafetyFundamentals of Fire Safety (AARP Bulletin – April 2016)

—Make sure you’ve got ionization and photoelectric alarms on every floor, including the basement. When the alarm chirps, replace the battery. —If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may need an alarm that flashes or vibrates to alert you that some-thing is amiss. —They can lower your utility bills, but they’re also a prime cause of home fires. Buy a new model that turns off automatically if it tips over or gets overheated. —Problems with electric blankets and heating pads tend to occur when they’re more than 10 years old. Re-place if they have charred spots, they have frayed or cracked electrical cords, or they’re a decade or more old. —Older homes may not be equipped to handle today’s stash of electronics. Overburdened systems can spark fires. Replace, don’t repair, damaged electrical cords. —Faulty fireplaces and wood stoves are prime hazards. Have a trained professional inspect your system, espe-cially if it’s been a while. Generators should also be checked, ideally every year. —Have an escape plan and practice it. Any plan should have two ways out of every room; make sure windows and doors open easily. Remember: stay low and go. —Smoking-related fires cause the most fire deaths in the U.S. It’s best not to smoke inside your house, but fires can start outside too. Dampen butts and ashes before throwing them away. —Battery-charged appliances, paper and cloth towels, and dryer lint.

Volunteers are needed to host Coffee Hour following the service on Sundays. In August, there is only one service at 9:00 a.m. Coffee hour will be held after the service. Cookies and juice are all that’s needed. Ask a friend to help and sign up in Wagner Hall this Sunday. Diocesan Newsletter With hurricane season upon us, the Diocese of Virginia’s weekly email communication, The e-Communique, included a link with information on how to prepare your home for a hurricane. If you are not already receiving the e-Communique, and would like more informa-tion on this, as well as events around the diocese, go to www.thediocese.net and look under Quick Links to sign up. For those who may not have internet access, copies of the hurricane preparedness sheets are available in Wagner Hall and the parish office.

Rector’s Discretionary Fund On the first Sunday of each month, the loose offering, that is, gifts exclusive of payments toward a member’s annual pledge, is desig-nated for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. Gifts to the fund may be made at anytime by writing a check to Calvary Episcopal Church and designating in the memo line “Rector’s Discretionary Fund.”

Forward Day by Day The new Forward Day by Day booklets for August—November 2016 are available in the Tract Rack at the back of the church, in Wag-ner Hall and Weber Hall. There is a limited number of large print for those who’d prefer one. Please help yourself!

Dear Calvary Congregation, News in the press concerning an escalation of fight-ing in South Sudan has been unsettling. Several of you have asked if our sister parish has been af-fected. Yes to a limited extent. I am including re-cent correspondence from Seth describing his or-deal. I have been in conversation with Seth concerning opportunities to educate youth beyond primary school. Discussions have centered on sending some of their youth to other locations with opportunities beyond primary school. They would become role models for others with the understanding that they would return to Manikakara and train others for at least one year. Those conversations are ongoing and Seth addresses some of my questions. I ask you to continue praying daily for the safety of our Christian brothers and sister at St. Paul Parish.

Frank Baxter, Chairman Calvary Mission Committee

Dear brother in Christ Frank, Warm greetings from the Christians of St. Paul Par-ish to all our brothers and Sisters at Calvary Church in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Many thanks for your usual concern about us here. This time we have both good news to tell you as well as bad. The good news is we are safe and our area remain peaceful and have started our unit prayer occasions across the Archdeaconry as usual. We also have an opportunity this time by the bishop who has just informed us to get two of our youth members to get prepared to go to Nairobi Kenya for studies (Diploma course for two years in Church mission and professional studies) this will have great positive impact to our Church and the society we have tried to assist them to have national certifi-cates and passports. These two youth members are Moses Bati Elia and Tameko Isaiah Severio their sponsorship is guaranteed but they will face slight challenges of transport fees and pocket money and other requirement all these can cost 1,000 USD. For this real we can call for prayers and small help from our friends hence it is encouraging our youth to look forward for bright future.

Some of the discouraging news includes the inci-dent which erupted in the capital Juba between the riffle forces which has lead to lose of our fellow brethren lives and forced other people to flew to other location for their safety. Another news is that part of the building of our Church St. Paul parish had crack and collapsed due to heavy rain which is some how a set back and may require effort to raise some funds for ma-terials like cement and bricks so as to reconstruct the site which has problem I will have a picture and send to you to see. Lastly I personally fell into ambush last week as I was traveling from Ibba to Yambio to create bank account for our Parish my mobile phones the Lap-top computer which was sent to us by friends from Calvary and motorbike I was riding were all col-lected by criminals who pretend to be from the re-bel group but later they left me free and didn't do harm to by body now am back to Manikakara and am safe. Anyway these are some stories which we may all pray for especially the situation in our Country to get back to normal and we have stability. Really we are very happy for you all as you pray for us. Our youth both boys and girls as long as gender is concern are willing to go for further edu-cation if there is any support. There are various studies and trainings which they can go for and return home in fact to help their people. According to research I have done it is better to go to coun-tries like Uganda and Kenya which are peaceful and mostly the expense is 2,000 USD for one stu-dent to complete a course. If there is any opportu-nity from your side kindly let's make it a success. We all remain faithful to God for the Love you have for us and thank the Lord for being protective to all of us. Wish you all good time as we continue praying for each others.

Thanks Brother in Christ

Seth
