Pig Roast Fundraiser to benefit 5 year old’s Leukemia battle Five year old Ava Raasch, was diagnosed with Pre-B acute

lymphoma leukemia on June 28, 2010. Local residents are joining together to throw a pig roast fundraiser in an effort to raise funds to build Ava her dream princess castle playhouse.

Ava lives in Juneau with her parents, Mike, Kari and brother Kegan. Ava has spent many months in the ICU and on the Hematology Oncology Treatment Floor at Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee. While receiving treatment she continues to undergo chemotherapy and procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, spinal taps, blood and platelet transfusions and many other treat-ments. Ava has a suppressed immune system and has struggled through her last phase of treatment called maintenance. During this last phase she has been treated for; Cryptosporidium, ring worm, shingles and chickenpox, many trips to the E.R. for fever and other illnesses. Ava has been in treatment for over 2 years and hopefully will have her last treatment this September 2012.

Since Ava had spent her early childhood years at The Pun’kin Patch Academy located in Juneau, Chris Kamrath, owner, initi-ated a plan to make Ava’s dream come true. “We felt it was only fitting to help Ava as she battles this terrible disease” said Chris Kamrath, owner. Since Ava’s wish is to have a Princess Castle of her own, Kamrath collaborated with friend, Glen Halliday, from Kids Crooked House to make her dream come true. “Kids Crooked House stepped up and donated the plans for the princess castle” said Kamrath “now all we need are the materials to build it”. With the help of many Pun’kin Patch parents, including Ryan and Kari Justmann with their building expertise, pig donation and time, the Raasch family, local business owners and friends, a pig roast fund-raiser has been planned to buy the building supplies for the castle. “It feels great to have Pun’kin Patch staff, families and friends come together for such an important reason,” said Kamrath.

Event details: Pig Roast Fundraiser to benefit Ava Raasch at the Juneau Community Center (500 Lincoln Dr. Juneau) on August 19 from 11am – 2pm. Join us for a pig roast, face painting, crazy hair and other kids activities in addition to a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the “Anything for Ava” fund to purchase the materials for her dream princess castle playhouse.

Contact Chris Kamrath from Pun’kin Patch Academy at 386-4700 or email at [email protected] for informa-tion about the event or to donate to the fund.

Kettle Moraine Symphony announces new seasonThe Kettle Moraine Symphony’s newly announced four-

concert 2012-2013 season features a landmark concert at Washington County’s most well-known landmark, Holy Hill.

The KMS, under the direction of Conductor Paul N. Thorgaard, will present, as its featured selection, Mozart’s Requiem, K.626, with the Moraine Chorus, directed by Dr. Peter Gibeau of the University of Wisconsin-Washington County. The concert will be presented at 3:00pm Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at Holy Hill in Hubertus.

Built in 1926 on the highest peak in the Kettle Moraine, the neo-Romanesque church was named a basilica in 2006. Its lofty setting and wooded grounds have made Holy Hill a place of beau-ty, peace and renewal for people from all over the world.

Requiem Mass in D minor was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna in 1791, commissioned anonymously by an eccentric count in memory of his wife. The composition was unfinished at Mozart’s death later that year, and the source of its completion has been surrounded by myth and controversy. The work has been performed by some of the world’s greatest conduc-tors and appears in modern films, notably Amadeus.

Tickets for Mozart’s Requiem at Holy Hill are included in the four-concert season ticket package, at $70 for adults, $60 for seniors. Season tickets may be ordered through the Kettle Moraine Symphony, PO Box 52, West Bend, WI 53095 or by calling 262-334-3469 for more information. Individual concert tickets are also available at $18 each for adults, $15 for seniors and students.

The season opens with a flourish, with Showpieces for Orchestra Sunday, September 23, 2012, with powerful classical pieces that have stood the test of time for music lovers of all genres. They include Franz Liszt’s Les Presludes, Modest Moussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and Berlioz’ Hungarian March among others. The opener will be presented at 2:30pm at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West Bend.

For the second year, a KMS concert will be saluting area U.S. armed forces. America Coast to Coast, featuring music by American composers, with a Salute to Veterans will be presented Sunday, November 18 at 2:30pm at the West Bend High School auditorium, 1305 E. Decorah Road. The concert features beloved favorites from American composers, patriotic and military selec-tions. All area veterans are invited.

The Kettle Moraine Symphony will return to Our Savior’s Sunday, May 19, at 2:30pm, presenting “From the New World,” Symphony No. 9, music of Antonin Dvorak, and will feature a performance by the senior winner of the Washington County Concerto Competition.

For more information about the tickets and the Kettle Moraine Symphony, visit kmsymphony.org.

United, United Way and Friends of Abused Families make a differenceWritten by Karin Westerlund, Community Impact Coordinator

Domestic violence and abuse does not just affect the woman, it also can negatively impact children even if their father never lays a hand on them. It is frightening to leave an abusive situation, par-ticularly when your husband threatens to “hunt you down” if you ever tried to leave and take his children from him. In Washington County we are fortunate to have a resource like Friends of Abused Families who can provide counseling and a safe place to stay.

With a great amount of support from the staff at Friends, one woman made arrangements to leave her home, take physical cus-tody of her children, and be safely housed at the emergency shelter for two months while divorce papers were served to her abusive husband. Because Friends helped her build the strength and cour-age to leave an abusive relationship, this woman went back to school and earned her bachelor degree, met and married a wonder-ful man, and has two healthy, happy, athletically active sons.

Your support of the United Way of Washington County pro-vides funding to Friends of Abused Families’ Emergency Shelter and 24-Hour Crisis Line, a program that makes a difference to abused women and children in Washington County.

When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. By giving to the United Way of Washington County, you sup-port 30 programs offered by 20 United Way partner agencies that provide services to Washington County residents which improves lives. To learn about how to LIVE UNITED through advocating, volunteering and giving to United Way of Washington County, visit its website at www.unitedwayofwashingtoncounty.org.

Moraine Park ranked as one of top 10 percent in the countryHighlighting the critical importance of improving student suc-

cess in America’s community colleges, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program has named Moraine Park Technical College as one of the nation’s 120 top community colleges for the second year in a row.

The Aspen Institute identified the 120 community colleges – 10 percent of all institutions – using a quantitative formula that assesses performance and improvement in four areas based on publicly available data from the National Center for Education Statistics’ Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and the U.S. Census Bureau: graduation rates, degrees awarded, student reten-tion rates, and equity in student outcomes. A full list of the 120 community colleges is available at aspenccprize.org.

“Moraine Park is honored to have been selected as one of the top 10 percent of community colleges in the country. We are grateful for the support we received from national leaders in business, education and labor that recognized Moraine Park as a nominee for the nation’s top community college prize,” said Dr. Sheila Ruhland, Moraine Park president.

Some seven million students – youth and adult learners – enroll in America’s nearly 1,200 public and private community colleges every year. “The success of our nation’s community colleges is more important than ever before,” said Aspen Institute College Excellence Program Executive Director Josh Wyner, who announced the names of the 120 top community colleges at the annual convention of the American Association of Community Colleges in Orlando, Florida. “At a time when a college degree is essential to entering the middle class, community colleges like Moraine Park offer the most prom-ising path to education and employment for literally millions of Americans.”

Moraine Park was established in 1912, and is one of 16 techni-cal college districts that make up the Wisconsin Technical College System. With campuses in Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend, Moraine Park offers more than 100 associate of applied sci-ence degrees, technical diplomas, apprenticeships and certificates delivered in a variety of formats — classroom, online and blended. Training and technical assistance for businesses is also offered.
