When Christ your life appears,

then you too will appear with him in glory.

-- Colossians 3:4

REJOICE AND BE GLAD "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad" (Psalm 118:24). Let us remember that these words of today's responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that poverty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us rejoice this day and be glad! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

Happy Easter to all of you! My first celebration of Sunday Eucharist at this parish was last Easter. The year has gone swiftly by. I am deeply grateful to the Bishop for assigning me as pastor to this vital community with a 180-year history going back to 1837. I have valued the opportunity to meet many

parishioners personally. I look forward to connecting with more of you who consider St. Vincent de Paul parish your spiritual home. Our current mission statement, proclaimed several years ago, includes the following statement: St. Vincent parish is an urban Roman Catholic community whose people are d iverse, multigenerational and family oriented. As the oldest parish in the Akron area, our tradition is rich and long in serving the spiritual, educational, physical, and social needs of all those who are a part of our community. Living our gospel values we reach out to those who are our neighbors. During the next several weeks we will offer brief reflections at our weekend Masses. These will give us a deeper understanding of what it means for us to be a parish in our times. We will explore how best, as a community and as individuals, to live our mission daily. Based upon these insights, we will focus upon better understanding the role of the Parish Pastoral Council, which is the leadership body of our Catholic Christian community. Whether you worship with us on a regular basis or occasionally or you are a visitor today, we are glad you are among us. Please consider being with us weekly – your presence and input matters. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]

HAPPY EASTER! On behalf of the rectory staff we wish all of you a very Blessed Easter Season. The office will be closed tomorrow, Easter Monday.

WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH

Our parish’s Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults celebrated the conclusion of the Period of Purification and Enlightenment at the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 15. The following catechumens were welcomed into Full Communion of the Catholic Church by receiving the three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation.

The following candidates have also completed the Period of Purification and Enlightenment, made a Profession of Faith, received the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation, and were received into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church.

On Sunday, April 23, we continue the R.C.I.A. sessions with a Period of Mystagogia or a time when the neophytes participate in the Eucharistic celebration at Sunday Masses. It is a time of embracing a deeper understanding of the mysteries of baptism, confirmation and holy Eucharist as they continue to celebrate their faith and conversion. This Period will last until Pentecost Sunday, June 4.

Let us continue to pray for each other as we ALL continue on our journey of faith and conversion.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

Easter is a time for families to gather for a special meal and to worship together at Church. Home rituals can also make this feast the most

important faith event of the year. Make an effort this year to bring Easter into your home. Try special decorations, a home Easter candle, a special meal and prayer together, sing “Alleluia” or “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” each day of Easter week to proclaim the Risen Lord!

CATHOLIC RADIO

EASTER MUSIC ON LIVING BREAD RADIO Most radio stations play Christmas music, but what about Easter?! Tune in to the Living Bread Radio Network (AM 1060 in Canton, Akron and Cleveland) (94.5 FM in

the Canton Vicinity) during Holy Week and celebrate with the beautiful hymns of the Church. Music will air each day at 3pm beginning on Palm Sunday with non-stop music on Easter Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Find a complete schedule online at Livingbread-radio.com.

STREET EVANGELIZATION TRAINING Ever wanted to share your Catholic faith with others, but didn’t know how to get the conversation started? Come learn how! St. Paul Street Evangelization provides a non-confrontational avenue for you to share Jesus Christ and the truth and beauty of the Catholic Faith with a hungry culture. We have developed a practical method for breaking the ice and asking some simple questions to quickly determine where a person is in their faith journey. This method provides you with a road map of how the conversation will go and how to plant seeds by sharing your own personal experiences to help the person move to the next step.

Basic Evangelization Training will be held from 9am to 5pm at St. Francis de Sales Parish on May 13, 2017. Space is limited. Sign up today! Register by going to www.streetevangelization.com and clicking our link under Upcoming

Workshops or by scanning this QR code. Registration closes April 29. Additional information may be obtained by giving Mike Powers a call at 330-618-7688, or email him at [email protected].

THE HOLY LAND A program with Fr. Dave!

Fr. Dave Halaiko is a licensed guide for tours in Israel. A program of Holy Land pictures and Scripture lessons is being offered here at St. Vincent’s on Tuesday, April 18, and Tuesday, April 25, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Scullen Room. The first week is an introduction to the land of Jesus, his early years, and his Galilean ministry. The second week takes us to Jerusalem, Holy Week, Easter, and the spread of the Church into the Roman Empire.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

THANK YOU FROM ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AUXILIARY

Our mission to feed those who need a helping hand is being accomplished only because of your thoughtfulness and generosity. We are so grateful for all of your 'gifts' - those who receive food are grateful also ! Blessings to all and have a HAPPY EASTER!

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY The Social Justice Ministry of St. Sebastian, St. Vincent, and St. Bernard churches invite you to the continued study of Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation, "Amoris Laetitia-On Love in the Family"-Chapter 4. The text can be found on line by typing in the title. We will meet after St. Vincent's 8:30 a.m. Mass Sunday, April 23, in St. Vincent's Parish rectory.
