“And up jumped Spring…”Dear Friends,

In the two months since we were appointed CPFJ’s Executive Directors, much has taken place. While tending to office details on a daily basis, we have held many meetings with various individuals, organizations, made numerous phone calls and funding appeals, sent thousands of letters seeking new members and membership renewals, organized our newsletter, The Vibe, and finalized plans for our upcoming Spring Concert Series. We are in the midst of organizing the CPFJ Jazz Festival in June, the Youth Jazz Camp, and should have a complete report to you in our April newsletter. Our Board of Directors, committee members, and volunteers are working hard to continue the tradition of bringing the finest in jazz to Central Pennsylvania. Our efforts are paying off and the response from all of you has been overwhelmingly positive:

• We have gained 60 new or renewing members in just the last month and a half. Heartfelt thanks to all of you, and also to those who responded to our “End of Year” appeal, with your charitable contributions. Your kindness and generosity make a big difference!

• Our Spring Concert Series, an exciting line-up of renowned jazz artists, has been made possible through a very generous grant from the Shearer Family Fund through R. Scott Shearer, and kicks off with the legendary Cyrus Chestnut at the Ware Center in Lancaster on March 18th!

• We are greatly appreciative of receiving, once again, a generous grant from the Olewine Family Trust to fund our annual Youth Jazz Camp at Messiah College, this year from June 13-15, under the direction of CPFJ Board members, Dr. William Stowman and Tim Warfield. Some students will still be in need of scholarships and anyone willing to provide scholarships for students please contact us at our office as soon as possible.

• We are grateful to the PA Council on the Arts for their very generous grants, placing us in a much better financial position for the coming year. We also wish to express our gratitude to the Cultural Enrichment Fund for their ongoing funding and support.

• Thank you to Amy Hall who has kindly offered to contribute her talents each month by providing the graphics for The Vibe! She will be working in tandem with our wonderful editor, Paul Haidet.

• We had a stellar turnout for our Jam Session at the Allen Theatre in MJ’s Café in Annville on, of all days, Super Bowl Sunday, February 5th from 6-9pm! Twenty musicians participated and we had a packed house. Go Jazz fans!!

Again, please tell friends, family and fellow jazz enthusiasts to join CPFJ, attend monthly concerts, support area venues featuring local artists and purchase their CD’s. We need to remain vigilant in our efforts to keep CPFJ thriving as a long-time producer of some of the finest jazz in the United States. If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering, please contact us. Thanks to all of you who continue to support and sustain CPFJ and the art of jazz. We would not exist without you. Warm regards, Andrea and Steve Rudolph Executive Directors2

Kim Thompson GroupApril 22nd CPFJ Concert

Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey

World renowned drummer Kimberly “KIM” Thompson was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She has taught & performed internationally in over 33 countries. As a 2003 graduate of Manhattan School of Music, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance & Composition. The New York jazz scene inspired her and she had many performances with Wallace Roney, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Stern, Jason Moran, Kenny Barron & Rufus Reid. Her diverse career also includes work with her current boss – Beyonce Knowles, as well as Kanye West, George Michael and Richard Bona. Her popularity and percussion prowess has landed her endorsements from YAMAHA drums, ZILDJIAN cymbals, and VATER sticks. Of her spiritual approach to jazz Kim says ““Jazz music is just you being you, and you just loving life, and you loving God, and God loving you back.” Performing in Kim’s group is one of the rising jazz guitar stars – Mike Moreno. Originally from Houston, Texas, Mike began studying music at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school that is renowned for its musical alumni,

including Jason Moran, Robert Glasper & Beyonce. Mike moved to New York City, attending the New School University with the highest scholarship the school had ever given to a guitar player. While working in NYC he impressed many jazz luminaries and was hired to play with the Joshua

Redman Elastic Band, Nicholas Payton Quartet, Terence Blanchard Quintet, Greg Osby 4, Wynton Marsalis and the JALC Orchestra, Jeff “Tain” Watts Quintet, Kenny Garrett Quintet, and Ravi Coltrane Quartet. Mike has released his debut CD “BETWEEN THE LINES” on World Culture Music and more recently has recorded his follow up record for the renowned Jazz Label - Criss Cross Records.

We hope that you all come out to hear this inventive and passionate jazz ensemble!

Cyrus Chestnut Soul FoodDivision One/Atlantic

Originally from Baltimore, Cyrus Chestnut is hard to pin down, and that’s what makes him so great. Originating in the church (he played publicly before the age of 9) and progressing through formal education first at the Peabody Institute and then at Berklee

College of Music in Boston, one can hear a myriad of styles and traditions weaving through his music. He has described his playing as “telling stories”, and the stories on this 2001 CD take the listener through a kaleidoscope of emotions and styles. There’s solo reverence (Swing Low Sweet Chariot), super cool (Cerebral Thoughts), nouveau New Orleans (Brother Hawkey Hawk), and down home groovin’ (Wellllll!), among others. Every track is unique, and the various combinations of solo, trio, quartet, and quintet keep the interest high and the toes tappin’. The lineup includes a who’s who of modern players, including Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Stefon Harris, Marcus Printup, Wycliff Gordon, Gary Bartz, and James Carter. All collections of short stories should sound this good. – Paul Haidet

Tommy Flanagan’s Super Jazz Trio Condado BeachJazz Row

Tommy Flanagan was sure one tasty pianist. One of the jazz greats originally from Detroit (he is in the company of Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, and Thad and

Elvin Jones), he arrived in New York in 1956 at the age of 26, and quickly established himself as one of the “go to” pianists for club and recording dates. That’s him you hear on Sonny Rollins’ “Saxophone Colossus”, John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”, and a host of other landmark albums throughout the history of jazz. In the mid ‘70s, he began to record a series of trio albums that have become must have’s for aficionados and students of jazz piano. This CD, released in 2009, contains material from a session recorded with bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Joe Chambers in 1978, as well as some gems never released on CD, including a lovely reading of “My One and Only Love” with guitarist Jim Hall, and five duet tracks with bassist Keter Betts revisiting a number of Bud Powell standards. The sound on this CD is excellent (particularly in the bass end), and the playing will keep me coming back again and again. – Paul Haidet

Track Listing: Pent-Up House, Condado Beach, Let’s Call This, So Sorry Please (trio version), Ballad, Milestones, My One and Only Love, Strictly Confidential, Dance of the Infidels, Bouncing with Bud, I’ll Keep Loving You, So Sorry Please (duet version)

“Stuff We Like” is The Vibe’s music review column. Unlike typical columns that look at only new recordings and give both thumbs up or thumb down, we are instead taking a positive spin, sharing the stuff we really like and not wasting your time with stuff we don’t. We see all recordings through the history of jazz as game for the column. Over the coming months you’ll find reviews of all shapes and styles of jazz from all eras. We will also be including the designation “core recording” for those masterpieces that, in our opinion, belong in the collections of all jazz lovers. If you are new to jazz, we think that you will find these “core recordings” particularly enticing. Enjoy!
