WELCOME TO ALL ATHLETES, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS IN SEASON 2018/2019

The 2018/2019 season promises to be as exciting as other previous seasons.

The past season saw many fantastic achievements from many of our athletes, including region, state

and national participation as well as a huge number of personal bests.

For those athletes returning to the Centre, we hope that you once again enjoy all the benefits that

Little Athletics can offer. To new athletes, we hope that you enjoy to experience at Sunbury little

athletes, develop new friendships, achieve your personal best in a safe, friendly and family

environment.

Once again, we are aiming for maximum athlete participation in all events, both local and

Regional. Opportunities for athletes to participate in regional events for relays, multi's, track & field

and cross country events, along with nominated State Championship days are listed in the

competition Program. The Committee is eager to ensure that we provide positive experiences for all

families involved in the Centre. So please don't hesitate to get involved and make suggestions to

improve our Centre.

We thank you for becoming a part of the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre in season 2018/2019.

Good luck and remember to have fun!

HEALTHY FOOD CHOICE POLICY The Centre/Region is aware that healthy eating is a vital part of good health. We recognize that lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, non-insulin dependent diabetes and obesity are all associated with the food we eat..

We acknowledge that healthy eating can have an impact on the lives of our members, and that the provision of healthy foods will contribute to better health for all. Enjoying a variety of foods from the different food groups is the key to healthy eating.

The Centre/Region will ensure that a variety of healthy food choices are available for all its activities. This applies to all meetings, competitions, functions and events and to all members, officials, players, volunteers, spectators, visitors and any others taking part in activities.

The following strategies have been adopted to ensure that a variety of healthy food choices are available at all Centre/Region activities.

1. The Centre/Region canteen (where applicable) will provide a variety of healthy food choices.

2. Healthy food choices will be available at all Centre/Region events and functions.

3. The enjoyment of healthy eating and the role of food in relation to health will be promoted at Centre/Region activities and in Centre/Region publications.

4. Healthy food choices will be displayed more prominently than other foods.

5. Healthy food choices will be priced competitively.

6. The variety of confectionery, potato chips, soft drinks and ice creams will be limited. 7. The Centre/Region will attempt to introduce at least two new healthy food choices to the Centre/Region, each season.

SMOKEFREE POLICY The Centre/Region is aware that smoking endangers health and believes that all Little Athletics venues and functions should be SmokeFree. In an open park the venue is defined as “the area inside an imaginary boundary 50 metres from the outside perimeter of the circular track”.

The following strategies have been adopted to promote a SmokeFree environment:

1. Cigarettes shall not be sold at any venue used by the Centre/Region.

2. Executive members, coaches and officials shall not smoke in view of the public or athletes during the lead up to and conduct of

Little Athletics events. 3. All Centre/Region meetings and functions shall be smoke-free.

4. All areas within the Centre/Region will be SmokeFree, including: the clubrooms, canteen, changing room, toilet blocks,

spectator areas, and competing areas. 5. The Centre/Region will place no smoking signs in prominent positions and remove ashtrays from all no smoking areas.

6. The Centre/Region will ensure that smokers have a place outside the venue or out of public view, where they can smoke, and

provide them with ashtrays/bins. 7. Reference will be made to the SmokeFree policy in Centre/Region publications.

8. Regular announcements will be made to ensure that members and visitors are aware of the Centre’s SmokeFree policy. Signs

provided by the Association will be placed in the venue. 9. All visitors will be required to observe this policy.

Non-compliance with the policy will be handled by an explanation of the Centre’s/Region’s SmokeFree policy to the person, including the identification of areas in which smoking is allowed. In the case of continued non-compliance with the policy, Centre/Region officials will use their direction as to the steps to be taken, which may include asking the person to leave the premises or function.

POLICY REGARDING EXERCISE IN EXTREME HEAT TEMPERATURES Sunbury Little Athletics Committee adopted as policy the following LAV guidelines for conducting Little Athletics in extreme heat conditions.

General

Children and adolescents are covered simultaneously by the recommendations in these guidelines.

It is recommended that if a large increase in temperature is likely to occur, parents and officials should take extra care to ensure athletes are sufficiently hydrated and shade is provided.

It is recommended that greater care be taken of athletes who are not fit or who are overweight, when exercising in high temperatures.

Education

All athletes should be educated on the importance of sun safety and how to be sun smart. This should be conducted at the beginning of the hot weather season, however, if this is untimely for Centres then it should be conducted at a more appropriate time.

Attire

All athletes should be wearing sun safe attire at competition days and whilst exposed to the sun (except when competing), hats or caps should also be worn.

All Board/Executive members, staff members, officials and volunteers must be seen setting a sun smart example. During competitions they are encouraged to wear collared shirts, hats and where appropriate sunglasses.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be provided and located in and around the competition arena. In doing so we are ensuring it is as convenient as possible for athletes, staff, officials and volunteers to use.

The sunscreen must be of the highest quality and meet all Australian standards.

Shade

Shade should be provided at all field events, marshalling and finish areas. It should also be provided in other areas where participants, staff, officials and volunteers will be waiting for long periods of time unprotected from the sun.

Public Announcements

It is recommended that during competition, public announcements be regularly made reminding those at the event to keep drinking water, apply sunscreen and remain in the shade wherever possible.

Fluids

It is recommended that athletes, staff, officials and volunteers drink at least 7-8ml of fluid per Kg of body mass to diminish the risk of heat illness (about 500 ml for a 65 kg person).

Children can stave off dehydration during 3 hours of exercise in 35°C heat if enough fluid is consumed.

Fluid should begin to be consumed at least two hours before exercising to promote adequate hydration and allow time for excretion of excess water.

There should be number of water stations in and around the competition arena. They should be located at all field events, marshalling areas and the finish line.

Page 16: SUNBURY LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE · Page | 2 SUNBURY LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE KEY CONTACTS SEASON 2018-2019 PRESIDENT BERNADETTE BURNS 0433 328 564 babowden1@hotmail.com VICE PRESIDENT

Page | 16

The water supplied should be cooler than the ambient temperature, as this will aid in the cooling process.

In addition to water, diluted sports drinks, cordial and fruit juices should also be made available. Not only will this make the fluids more palatable to the younger participants but it will also be beneficial for replacing fluids, energy and electrolytes lost during exercise. It will delay the onset of exercise-induced exhaustion and hence aid in the prevention of heat stroke.

Additional water should also be provided so as to allow participants to douse themselves and thereby assisting in the cooling process. E.g. spray bottles, hoses and buckets etc.

Postponement/Cancellation

It is recommended that parents and officials use caution if athletes are exercising in ambient temperatures above 35°C for an extended period of time (more than 1 hour).

When children are exercising in the heat parents and officials must also pay close attention to athletes doing intermittent events (jumps & throws) as well as continuous events.

It is recommended that each competition venue have the necessary equipment to record ambient temperatures throughout the competition.

It is recommended that events be called off if it is forecast ambient temperature is likely to rise above 37°C.

On the day of competition it is recommended the ambient temperature be recorded at 15-minute intervals at the same point on the track each time.

It is recommended that if the temperature is over the cutoff for two (2) consecutive measurements that no new event should be called until the temperature drops below the cutoff OR competition should be ceased until the temperature drops below the cutoff.

Consideration should also be given to postponing field events that span a considerable time.

COMPETITION DETAILS

Normal Centre competition is held Saturday mornings at the Eric Boardman Reserve, Mitchells Lane, Sunbury.

All children should be out in the high jump area, ready to participate in the competition warm-up at 8.15am. The warm-up sessions are conducted prior to any competition.

During the season we hold occasional "twilight meetings" that start at 5.30pm. These meetings are listed in the Centre's calendar of events listed in the front of this book.

On wet days a decision will be made by Officials setting up that morning as to whether we continue or cancel, you should check out the web site for the latest information at

http://www.sunburylac.org.au or alternatively ring Bernadette Burns on 0433328564

for information from 8.15am onwards.

On very hot days or days of inclement weather the Chief of Officials will consult with the committee and may decide to shorten or change the program of the day. We will try to have athletes all doing an equal amount of events for points scoring purposes.

PARENT HELP ROSTER

The success of Little Athletics relies heavily on parent participation.

For the 2018/2019 season we are asking that all families assist in a least 4 events across the course of a month. Parents are asked to ensure their names are recorded on the results sheet of the event that they assist with.

No event will run until we have the required parent helpers to assist with the event. As we all know “Many hands make light work”

All children are encouraged to return to their families upon completion of an event until their next event is called. So please ensure your children know where you are at all times.

COMMUNICATION

Website, Emails, Briefings, Newsletters, Noticeboards & Local Papers

It is important that we are able to "stay in touch" with our member families. To do this we try to communicate in as many "modes" as possible including:

From time to time we will hold briefings at the Centre, usually before competition starts.

The Centre receives many flyers and information sheets with details of special events, Open Days, etc. These are available from the Clubrooms, Team App on our Website and Facebook page.

Periodically we will send out emails to members. If you change your email address please advise our Registrar, Deborah Watson ([email protected])

Finally, we keep up to date useful information on our website http://www.sunburylac.org.au

ATHLETE and PARENT COACH / OFFICIALS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

COACHING AT SUNBURY LAC

In 2018/19, the SLAC will be implementing a comprehensive development program for all of our athletes.

Weekly training will be available for all of Sunbury's little athletes, with specialist training on other nights depending on athlete demand. Progressive coaching activities on competition days, as well as special events throughout the season will also be provided. Training will start from October 2018 from 5.30pm and continue every Wednesday during the season Please see website for official start date or Team App.

Once again, our U6 and U7 athletes will be participating in the ‘On Track' program, both during competition and in training. ‘On Track' is designed to increase every athlete's skill development in sport, and to create a fun filled, non-competitive environment for this to occur.

Please refer the web site http://www.sunburylac.org.au for details of when training and coaching

events are to be scheduled.

OTHER ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

LAV runs special coaching clinics for athletes throughout the season including multi event clinics, walk clinics and activities for specific age groups. This includes the Junior Development Squad (JDS). Our coaches can provide more details on these opportunities. Please see the LAV Calender for JDS Dates

U12-U16 Athletes Only

The Junior Development Squad (JDS) gives U12 – U16 athletes an opportunity to develop additional

skills and improve technical competencies through participation in coaching and training sessions with

some of Victoria’s leading coaches. Training with other keen and enthusiastic squad members is both

fun and motivational and helps develop new friendships based on an enjoyment of athletics. The

emphasis on learning new athletic skills and improving existing ones is in a friendly and supportive

environment.

To join JDS, athletes must achieve the qualifying standard in their current age group of the season.

Athletes must achieve one standard on two separate occasions or two different standards, once. This

ensures that the performances show a consistency and not just a once off.

The JDS information pack contains the calendar, qualifying criteria and standards. By going to the

PARENT COACH / OFFICIAL DEVELOPMENT

We encourage any parents who would like to get involved in coaching to attend a LAV Introduction to Coaching Course. The centre will pay the cost of attending this course for parents who are willing to get involved in coaching or helping us run the program on Saturdays. Please let any committee member know if you are interested.

LAV and the Australian Track and Field Coaching Association (ATFCA) also run a structured program of courses for parents who wish to learn more about officiating.

Up to date information about officiating or coaching courses run by LAV on our website, or talk to our coaches or Chief of Officials.

RELAY PROGRAM

Relays provide an opportunity for athletes to participate in team events and to learn relay skills. Relays allow athletes to form lasting friendships and develop a sense of teamwork. Athletes experience the enjoyment of competing in teams and cheering on club mates. Sunbury LAC has a strong history in relays with many teams qualifying for the State Relay Championships and even medalling at State Level.

RELAY EVENTS There are two Relay Events in the Little Athletics Calendar Northern Metro Region Relay Championships, usually in Late October or November each year and State Relay Championships held in December. Please refer to the Competition Program for Dates and Locations of these events

Relays are open to athletes in the U/9 to U/15 age groups only. Athletes can compete in a maximum of three (3) team events The following events are offered:

Girls and Boys 4x100, 4x200, Medley (2 x 100, 1 x 200, 1x400) in all age groups Mixed Sex (2 x boys and 2 x girls from the same age group) - 4x100, 4x200 Mixed Age Medley U/9 –U/11 (1xU/9, 1 xU/10, 2xU/11) Mixed Age Medley U/12 –U/13 (2xU/12, 2xU/13) Mixed Age Medley U/14-U/15 (2xU/14, 2xU/15)

RELAY NOMINATION PROCESS

If you wish your child to compete in any of the upcoming relay events, please complete the Relay Team Nomination Form. Each athlete can be nominated in a maximum of 3 events. In some age groups we have limited numbers and do not have enough athletes to make up a team. If you nominate and this is the case there is always the option of running up an age group to form a team. If an athlete is nominated we will endeavour to find them a run. Please note that we cannot run a successful relay program without parent involvement.

If your child participates in a Relay competition, parents are required to do a duty as part of

Sunbury’s duty commitment.

If you nominate your child for relays, they must be available for both Region and State

Relays, in the event that the team qualifies.

Entry fees will be fixed by LAVic,.

TEAM MANAGER

The Sunbury Team Manager and committee are responsible for selecting the teams after nominations have been received.

Relay teams shall be selected using the following criteria:

To select teams with the best potential for progression to State Championships, with ultimately

the ability to medal in the final.

The selection is based on the following criteria:

Athletes performances over relay distances (100, 200 and 400)

Athletes proficiency in relay race technique

Attitude and being a ‘team’ member

Attendance at training.

The role of the Team Manager is to oversee all the teams and assist with training, order of runners, entry forms for competition and overall organisation on Relay Championship Days. It is a time consuming job and the Team Manager cannot take responsibility for each individual team. Therefore we require an Age group coach/manager. You will be responsible for organising training for your group and managing them on the competition days. The Team Manager will be on hand to provide support where needed. You do not need experience or skills in relays. The Team manager will be able to conduct an initial training session and then each team can train when it suits all team members. The first training session will be on a nominated Wednesday night, between 5.30 and 6.30pm. If you wish to nominate for Age Group Coach/Manager for any particular age group, please complete the relevant section as part of your child’s relay nomination form.

Entry forms will be available from the clubrooms and website.

Closing date for entries is 2 weeks before the event.

Parents of competing athletes will be required to assist with officiating on a roster basis at both Region and State Championships.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Our Code of behaviour exists for a very good reason - to ensure that we achieve our goals of providing a fun, family and friendly environment for athletes and parents alike. Any breaches of this code are taken very seriously and acted upon.

For OFFICIALS

Compliment all participants on their efforts.

Be consistent, objective and courteous in calling all infractions.

Condemn unsporting behaviour and promote respect for all opponents.

Ensure that the “spirit of the game” for children is not lost by using

common sense and not over-emphasising errors.

Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are

appropriate to the age and ability of the participants.

Publicly encourage rule changes, which will reinforce the principles of

participation for fun and enjoyment.

Ensure that your behaviour is consistent with the principles of good sporting behaviour. Actions speak louder than words.

Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed of sound

officiating principles and the principles of growth and development of children.

Hold a current Working with Children Check as required by LAVic.

Avoid use of inappropriate language.

For ATHLETES

Play by the rules.

Never argue with an official. If you disagree, ask your Team or Age Manager to deal with the matter.

Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, coaches, parents or

other athletes, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in our sport.

Work equally hard for yourself and/or your Centre/Club. Your Centre/Club’s performance will benefit.

Be a good sport. Applaud all good results whether they are by your Centre/Club, opponent or the other Centre/Club.

Treat all athletes, as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere

with, bully or take unfair advantage of another athlete.

Co-operate with officials, coaches, club mates and other participants.

Without them there would be no competition.

Participate in Little Athletics for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and coaches.

Avoid use of inappropriate language.

For COACHES Be reasonable in your demands on young athlete’s time, energy and

enthusiasm.

Teach athletes the rules of the sport are mutual agreements, which no one should evade or break.

Whenever possible, group athletes to give a reasonable chance of success.

Avoid over-coaching the better performing athletes, the “just average”

athletes need and deserve equal time.

Ensure any physical contact with athletes is appropriate to the situation and necessary for the athlete’s skills development.

Avoid situations with your athletes that could be construed as compromising.

Remember that children participate for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only part of their enjoyment. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing an event.

Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the athletes.

Take into consideration the maturity level of the children when scheduling and determining the length of training times and competition.

Coaches should never solicit, whether overtly or covertly, or by actively

recruiting athletes who are already being coached to join their squad.

Develop respect for the ability of opponents as well as for the judgement

of officials and coaches.

Follow the advice of a physician when determining when an injured athlete is ready to recommence training or competition.

Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed of sound coaching

principles and the principles of growth and development of children.

Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour, by not harassing athletes, other

coaches or officials, smoking on the arena or being intoxicated

Not publicly criticise or disagree with the work of other coaches. Hold a current Working with Children Check

Avoid use of inappropriate language.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR cont.

For PARENTS

Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing, do not force him or her.

Focus upon the child’s efforts rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the children in setting realistic goals related to his/her

own ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.

Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each event is accepted without undue disappointment.

Encourage children to always participate according to the rules.

Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing an Event.

Remember children are involved in Little Athletics for their enjoyment, not yours.

If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the

appropriate channels rather than questioning the official’s judgement and

honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.

Support all efforts to remove all verbal and physical abuse at Little Athletics

activities.

Recognise the value and importance of being a volunteer official and/or coach. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities

for the children and deserve your support.

Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour, by not harassing athletes,

parents, coaches or officials, smoking on the arena or being intoxicated.

Avoid use of bad language.

For SPECTATORS

Remember that children participate in Little Athletics activities for fun. They are not participating for the entertainment of spectators, nor are they miniature professionals.

Applaud good performances and efforts from each athlete. Congratulate all

participants upon their performance regardless of the event outcome.

Respect the officials’ decisions. If there is a disagreement, follow the

appropriate procedure in order to question the decision and teach the children to do likewise.

Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a

competition. Positive comments are motivational.

Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches,

officials or athletes.

Show respect for each participant. Without them there would be no events.

Encourage athletes to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.

Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour, by not harassing athletes, parents, coaches or officials, smoking on the arena or being intoxicated.

Avoid use of inappropriate language.

RACE WALKING

DEFINITION

Race walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground, so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg shall be straightened (ie. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until it passes under the body in the vertical upright position.

CAUTIONS, REPORTS & DISQUALIFICATIONS

A judge may verbally caution an athlete twice, once for contact and once for knees. However, once a judge has reported the athlete for an infringement the judge may not apply a caution. No cautions are allowed in the last lap of an event. When cautioning an athlete, the judge should call the athlete's number first. The term caution must be used. A judge who determines that an athlete's mode of progression does not comply with the definition gives a report. An Under 9 and Under 10 athlete is addressed by the number and the term report or reported must be used along with the reason for the report. For Under 11-16 athletes all reports are non-verbal.

No of reports needed for disqualification depends on the number of judges as follows:

The distance is measured at the point where the tape crosses the inner edge of the ring to the nearest centimetre.

REWARD AND RECOGNITION PROGRAM Our reward and recognition program is designed to highlight our emphasis on athletes doing their best, persisting, and participating in all events. This emphasis is consistent with LAV Policy. We also recognise achievements such as records, season best performances, participation at Regional and State events as well as achievements at school events. Our committee constantly reviews this program to ensure we are promoting Little Athletics values. Our reward and recognition program includes:

Personal Best (PB) listing on event sheets and "real time" recognition.

PB recognition on event "tickets".

Announcements / rewards for achievement of PB's.

End of season "Most Improved Athlete" award (see below).

Recognition of achievements in announcements and newsletters.

Record certificates.

End of season PB certificates

End of season "Age Group Champion" awards for participation and performance (see below).

End of season awards:

Age Group Awards These awards recognise participation and performance by athletes, subject to the eligibility criteria below. Athletes are awarded points for each event they participate in (see opposite page). The more events athletes participate in, and the better their performances, the more points accumulated. Trophies are awarded to the 3 athletes who have accumulated the most points in each age / gender group. Junior Boy / Girl Trophy U6 - U9 Intermediate Boy / Girl Trophy U10 - U12 Senior Boy / Girl Trophy U13 - U16 These awards recognise participation and performance by athletes and are awarded to the athletes who accumulate the most points across the age groups indicated. Participation Recognition Trophy All athletes who meet our eligibility criteria will receive a trophy recognising their participation in Little Athletics for the season. They will also receive a certificate listing their PB's in all events for the summer season. Most Improved Athlete During the 2004-2005 season Andrew and Sally Dick donated funds for a Most Improved Perpetual Trophy. The criteria for the most improved boy and girl will be determined firstly by the number of personal bests achieved and secondly they will not have been awarded a 1 st, 2nd or 3rd trophy in their age group. Most Dedicated Athlete During the 2009-2010 season, Les McLean donated a perpetual trophy for the Most Dedicated athlete during the track & field season. The criteria for the most dedicated athlete is the athlete who competes in the most number of events during the season, but does not win a 1 st, 2nd or 3rd in their age group. Eligibility for End of Season Awards To be eligible for consideration in the selection of the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre's end of season awards, an athlete must participate in at least 50% plus 1 of the normal Centre meetings conducted during the Track & Field season from the date of the athlete becoming a registered, financial member. Athletes must be financial members to receive a trophy.

SUNBURY LITTLE ATHLETICS POINTS SYSTEM

SLAC has developed a points system, based on what is often referred to as the ‘frewin tables', that recognizes the individual performances of each athlete. How do the points work? Throughout the track and field season, each athlete receives points for each event they participate in, based on the standard of their performances. At the end of the track and field season, points gained for all events each athlete has competed in are tallied up, providing each athlete with an aggregate score for the season. These aggregate scores are then used to determine the track and field season Age Group Awards, and the season Junior Boy and Girl Trophies and the Senior Boy and Girl Trophies. The Centre's point system is based on 60 points equaling the Centre Record, carried over from the previous season for that particular event. Points are aligned to equal increments above and below the Centre Record. The following is only a small sample of the overall table, for the 100m sprint:

Under 7 Under 8 Under 9 Under 10 Under 11

16.00 16.59 15.60 16.22 14.46 14.78 13.50 14.41 13.13 13.40
