January and February mark an exciting time for us in our preschool and prek classes. Even though we have used words, letters, and writing in our classes all year long, during the next couple months we will especially emphasizing LETTERS and NUMBERS. We will be reading A,B,C books, reading signs, singing alphabet songs, writing our names, making la-bels for the classroom, making books, and visiting the library. Of course, we will also read several stories each day, as we always do.

This is an especially good time to talk to your preschooler about letters and words and how important they are to us. Point out street signs you pass. Call attention to the labels on food boxes and notice words in your daily environment. Words are all around us. As adults we often take them for granted, but to a preschooler or kindergartener, words are a

new and strange thing.

Most of the preschool children can now recognize their own names, and some can identify their friends’ names. The five year olds are starting to read all of the other children’s names and many other signs and posters in the room. They may label pictures they draw, or ask for the letters needed to make a sign. They are in the early stages of

beginning reading.

Children learn the value of reading through many happy experienc-es with books. They find that books give them pleasure and infor-mation. Their language grows through being read to. They begin to tell stories themselves—sometimes using puppets or toys. They learn that pictures have meaning and that they are able to use pic-tures to help tell a story. In these ways, the children are getting ready to read themselves

What a joy it is to see the reading and writing accomplishments of our older students in K-3rd grade! Check out their bulletin boards! The kindergarteners are writing words and beginning to write sen-tences, while the first graders are writing stories and math story problems, our second and third graders are reading everything they can get their hands on, and are learning to do research both in books and online. Stop by to read some of the stories they have written. Observing our students learning to make sense of print, is a delight!

Did you know that there are 2,029 Lutheran (LCMS) Schools in the US (including preschools, ele-mentary schools and high schools)? More than 200,000 students attend these schools. The LCMS also has 10 universities and 2 seminaries. A team of 26,600 educators teach in Lutheran Schools.

During this week we will be celebrating with 2,000+ other schools, just how awesome it is to at-tend a Lutheran School! Our theme this year is “IT’S STILL ALL ABOUT JESUS!” We have sev-eral special events planned for that week:

Sunday, Jan. 21st—Join us for Sunday Worship at 10:45 a.m. Our 1st-3rd Grade Choir sing some of their favorite songs, serve as greeters, candle lighters, ushers, and scripture readers. Families are invited to join us!

During the school week, we will focus on a Bible Truth each day. Come to school dressed in the color of the day: Monday: BLACK— “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

Tuesday: RED— “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Wednesday: WHITE— “Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” (Psalm 51:7)

Thursday: GREEN— “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)

Friday: GOLD/YELLOW— Be faithful until death and I will give you a crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
