Healey Exhaust Notes Page 1 September 2020 Summit 2020 Letter by Donald Margeson Healey Exhaust Notes September 2020 Greetings fellow Healey friends, It's been a tough time scheduling events this year. The pandemic has been a 'spoiler'. Notwithstanding, Peter and Jud have done a great job setting up for the anticipated Summit this year in Newport, RI, but alas it's now postponed till September 2021. It will still be a great event so be sure to reserve yourselves for it. Thanks for your good work gents. Also want to thank Rick Neville again for stepping in to handle club planning and business while yours truly was working hard to win the battle with my lymphoma issue. It's in remission and I feel great! And of course, Linda Hakala with her always attention to detail and handling club finances. We've had some great weather this summer so truly hope you've made time for getting out and about with your car on some of our fine New England roads. Covid-19 has certainly made it difficult for anything in our world. The virus is not to be challenged with any frivolous behavior, especially for seniors like us. "Social distancing" is the watchword, for sure. But still, maybe you've made it out to dinner, or seen some countryside with a drive touring about by yourselves or with other "LBC" friends. Or, perhaps a car show (they've been very scarce this season). And, of course, some work to spiff up the car, or horrors - to repair it. Well, while the weather has been kind, it was indeed a hot July and August. Our cars do not like heat - makes them run even hotter, eh! We like the 'breeze' with the top down, but a hot breeze some- times is not too pleasant. We are now coming into the nice weather for drives. All I can say is - get out and hit the road. Go out to lunch or a light dinner, or for an ice cream, a picnic, a scenic drive, or just to hear the "vrrrrooomm" of the exhaust/muffler. And to get that smile and occasional wave from a passer-by. As a matter of fact, while it was not with the AHC of NE, Helen and I did have the pleasure of a 'covered bridge' tour with the BCNH club recently. I also belong to that club and they also are an active and fun bunch like us.. We went west from New Hampton, NH on Route 3 and then north along the Connecticut River valley area on Route 10 and then into the White Mountains region to find covered bridges. A delightful drive with 17 - "LBC" cars attending. Am thinking I need to set up something along that theme as well. Perhaps a 'day-drive' to the Owl's Head Transportation Museum near Rockland, ME which is quite good, or even make it an overnight trip with a nice seafood dinner rolled into the schedule/venue too. Another idea that could be rolled into the same trip is to the Maine Botanical Gardens (www.mainegardens.org) next spring/early summer, if the pandemic is not too difficult then. The season is getting short with only September and October left for us. It's been a difficult year for events with the pandemic lurking. And while it likely will continue to be for next year too, perhaps we can figure a way to make something work with social distancing and still have fun. Anyway, if these thoughts tickle your fancy, let me know. Let’s keep our car spirits up and get out and drive or classic as much as possible. Happy Fall, and be safe on the roads Best, Prez Donald Margeson,

Rallye for a Cure

See you there!

Linda and Bill Wright,

Rallye Masters

Join us Saturday, September 12th, for our 8th Annual “Rallye for a Cure!” This year’s Rallye will start at our new host, New Country BMW in Hartford, and will culminate with parade laps and lunch at Lime Rock Park. Please spread the word by sharing this information and REGISTER today! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeH4zLe_bdpWE4PEQaNifBBQPLV92DzoWvyeadYtRlHIg-YMg/viewform

The best parts about the Rallye— the route and creative clues, parade laps on the track, and the good feeling that comes from sup-porting a great cause— can be enjoyed while physically distanced, and we are committed to making all parts of the Rallye safe from start to finish!

For example, our Drivers’ Club meeting will be sent via video in advance of the Rallye, and the Awards will be presented on Zoom at 7 pm that night. More details forthcoming, but rest as-sured, we will keep our Rallye family safe.

40th Annual British Motorcar Gathering and Picnic at Wickham Park, Manchester CT

Sunday, September 13th, 2020 at 10:30 AM

The CT Triumph Register is pleased to announce that the 40th Annual British Mo-torcar Gathering and Picnic at Wickham Park on Sunday September 13th is moving forward. Wickham Park has approved our plan for limiting social exposure by parking cars 10-15 feet apart and eliminating raffles, classes, judging, trophies, and food/drink offerings.

Please also note that the start time is 10:30AM which is a little bit later than in prior years.

Anyone planning on attending should continue to check here on the website https://ctriumph.wordpress.com/ for the latest updates, particularly the morning of the event. A weather-related cancellation would be posted here on the home page.

It is everyone’s personal responsibility to bring a mask and wear it when closer than 6 feet of others. And please do not attend if you are ill or have a fever.

We hope for great weather so that folks can make the drive out to Wickham Park and enjoy some British car camaraderie.

2019 Charitable Contribution to The Jimmy Fund By Craig Hess

I’m happy to report that in the midst of this stressful year, the AHC of NE has delivered its donation for the club’s 2019 charity, The Jimmy Fund. For anyone who is not familiar with The Jimmy Fund, it is the fundraising arm of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). I was very pleased when the AHC of NE selected The Jimmy Fund for its charity in 2019, since I have a personal connection. I am a cancer survivor and my grandson Andrew (pictured above with Wally during his treatment) is also a survivor. I can attest that all DFCI’s patients are tremendously thankful for DFCI’s ground-breaking research and expert compassionate treatment and support. This year’s donation was delayed beyond the normal May/June delivery, which traditionally has been tied to an auction at the annual AHC-NE Summit for a special opportunity provided by the Canada’s Quebec Chapter of the Austin Healey Club. The winning bidder is hosted to an unforgettable Canadian Grand Prix weekend with the special privilege of participating in the Canadian Grand Prix Driver’s Parade, which the Quebec Chapter of the Austin Healey Club has had the honor of hosting for the past 20 years. A portion of the winning bid for this very special experience (which is not collected until the Grand Prix organizers approve the running of the Grand Prix) is then graciously provided by the Quebec Chapter of the AHC for the AHC-NE’s designated charity. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Canadian Grand Prix was at first postponed in June and then cancelled in July. Once the Grand Prix was cancelled the AHC-NE was able to commit the funds that had been previously donated for The Jimmy Fund donation. This has been an exceptionally tough year for The Jimmy Fund, with many of their fundraising events cancelled or forced to be run virtually. This has reduced the normal level of donations received. I’m extremely thankful for the generosity of our club members who through “pass the hat” efforts at club meetings and donations from club fundraising events, raised $5,000 for The Jimmy Fund. In addition, I’m thrilled to report that The Jimmy Fund has an anonymous donor who will be matching our $5,000 donation. So, with this donor’s match, our donation will do $10,000’s worth of good. Since the COVID-19 restrictions have eliminated the photo-op for the presentation of the check this year, this write up will have to do.

The Jimmy Fund/DFCI Thanks You Great Job Everyone!

Craig Hess

Nuts & Bolts Corner Subjects Covered during Recent

Technical Conference Calls

QUESTION 1: Bleeding the master cylinder This caller reports that his clutch master cylinder is leaking and he ordered a replacement from Moss Motors. What is involved with bleeding the master cylinder once it is installed?

ADVICE: The technical team advises the caller to bleed the master cylinder on the bench, prior to installation. Take a small container of brake fluid, push the plunger in and then dribble the brake fluid in by hand. You will have to repeat this procedure 4-5 times, until it squirts out at the other end. The little rubber plugs that come with the master cylinder can then be put in, and then you can install the master cylinder in your car. Next, hook up the clutch line and re-bleed the master cylinder. This procedure also applies to Sprites. It is always better to pre-bleed it, otherwise you may get an air bubble in the line which does not come out by pressing the clutch pedal. If the master cylinder is already installed, the best thing is to pressurize the reservoir with a pres-sure bleeder (available from a car part store), and that will push the brake fluid into the master cylinder.

Different types of brake fluid were also discussed. A silicone brake fluid will leave you a softer brake pedal. The advisory team favors dot 3 or dot 4 brake fluid. Finally, for those members considering purchasing a master cylinder: Pegasus offers both good quality and pricing. Another good source is the Bugeye Guy for Sprites. QUESTION 2: Tachometer stuck at 2000 rpm on a 100 BN1 This member had his tachometer rebuilt approximately 15 months ago, because it was stuck at 2000 rpm. It has been working fine until a few weeks ago. It seems to work fine in all gears, ex-cept overdrive, where it doesn’t want to go much higher than 2000 rpm. ADVICE: Check to see if the core is in the correct position—Nisonger recommends that it sticks out 7/16”. Participants on the call reported readings from slightly over 2000rpm to 2300 rpm in overdrive at a speed of 60mph. The caller will need to take a few more readings at different speeds and check the installation of the unit. Lastly, MOMA in Albuquerque has been very helpful to another caller with a similar issue.

QUESTION 3: How can we reduce cockpit heat in the summer What is the best way to reduce the heat in the cockpit in the summer. Will any of the add-on devices cause an increase in engine temperature? ADVICE: Pull up the bonnet and use a flashlight to see if there is light coming through into the firewall and foot well. Seal up any cracks and holes to reduce hot air traveling into the cockpit. You can also install insulation (Dynamat) under the carpet and under the transmission tunnel. Dynamat is a thin layer of self-stick foam on one side and shiny aluminum on the other side.

Healey Exhaust Notes Page 10 September

Nuts & Bolts Corner Subject Covered during recent

Technical Conference Calls

QUESTION 4: Hooking up a pair of driving lights This caller would like to know where he can hook up a pair of driving lights. He would like to have them on all the time like daytime driving lights as a safety feature and shut off when you turn off the key. ADVICE: Install a relay under the bonnet and run the wire in through a toggle switch. If you do want them on all the time, then run it through the relay and ignition. Another option is to tap it off the fuse box and jump to the relay to the driving lights. This way you won’t put extra amperage load to the ignition switch. Pull the power for the relay directly from the battery and the power for the lights can come from the brown wire from the fuse box. QUESTION 5: 1959 Bugeye keeps stalling This caller has a 1959 Bugeye. When he starts the car on a warm day, the car will constantly stall, even with the choke fully out. This continues until the car hits 160 degrees. The car has a 948 with a Weber carburetor. ADVICE: Until the Weber carburetors are warm at approx. 160-170 degrees, they will cause the car to stall. Other carburetors are more reliable. One of the technical advisors has SU HS-2 carburetors in his car and no problems. SU-carburetors are better. If you prefer to stay with the 948’s, then change to HS-1. However, the caller would like to avoid having to spend a lot of money for a car-buretor change. Another technical advisor thought that the caller was probably over-jetting by having the choke fully out and putting too much fuel into the car. A good mechanic can make the proper adjust-ments.

QUESTION 6: Screeching brakes on a BN1 This member reported that when he drives straight down a road, the car goes great. However, when navigating through a turn, sometimes he hears a screeching sound coming from his front brakes. When he removed the drum, he found a scoring line where the shoes are rub-bing against the drum. The only thing he can think that could be the cause of this is the fact that his reproduction shoes are a bit thicker than the originals, perhaps ½mm. ADVICE: The advise is to remove the shoes and machine them a tiny bit smaller to match the width of the metal shoe. If the shoe is shinier where it has been rubbed, then look at the steady post to make sure it sits properly and the brake shoe is not being kicked out. The little felt donut stops the shoe from squealing.

Your First HealeY ….

Another great find by Rick Neville : “FAKE NEWS”

Healey Heavy Hauler - Jud Perkins got his first Healey (1964 BJ-8) in college. Upon graduation he drove from Columbus, Ohio to Los Angeles for graduate school with every worldly possession he owned. These pictures were taken upon arrival in LA, the car as driven and then the stuff laid out.

Healeys on the Green at Mystic Seaport by Ted Stanton On August 15th, eight Healeys met at the upper parking lot to attend the Antique Engine Show at the Mystic Seaport. After a bit of chatting, we queued up according to the age of the car and crossed the road to make a grand entrance into the Seaport. On the Green, we joined Mike Goldblatt’s Florida-green 100-6 BN4. In attendance were: Bob & Gayle Selvidio in their 1962 BT7, Herb Williamson & friend Brian Haelston in Herb’s 1954 BN1, Donna Cunard in her beautiful 1968 BJ8, Nick & Gail Thompson-Allen in their 1962 BT7, Jud Perkins & Pat Duncan in Jud’s 1965 BJ8, Ted & Judi Stanton in their BN1, Mike Goldblatt with his 100-6 BN4 and Dutcha Slieker-Hersant in her 1961 BT7. We were visited by member Emanuel Markis, who came to compare the three different shades of Healey Blue from his BT7 with the Healeys at the show in order to determine which shade he would use to repaint his car. We spent the day strolling through the wonderful show with some rare antique marine engines, catching up with each other and answering questions from the public. As usual, our Healeys drew a lot of interest and questions from the Seaport visitors, in particular from the very young ones. Many of them got to sit in a Healey and have their picture taken by Mom or Dad. After all, we have to start building interest with the very young ones, in order to have future drivers taking care of our beautiful classic automobiles. Hopefully, we’ll do this next year without Covid19 hanging over our heads.

CONTACT INFORMATION

The Veterans Miracle Center (VMC) of Albany, NY https://www.vmcalbany.org/ was chosen as the Austin-Healey Club of New England’s charity for 2020 at our teleconference on April 18th. The VMC will be using our donation to purchase day-to-day supplies for veterans and active duty service members and families in need along with beds for the homeless, who will be transitioning into apartment living. Since we have no events at present where we can pass the hat, we’re taking the unusual step of asking for donations to be mailed directly to Linda Hakala, our club’s treasurer. Any money col-lected through these mailed donations as well as those collected at future events will be donated directly to the VMC. Please give generously, to help those who have served and continue to serve our country. Mail your check, made out to Austin-Healey Club of New England, di-rectly to Linda Hakala, 17 Bittersweet Ln, Hancock, NH 03449. Make sure you note on the check it is for the Veterans Miracle Center
