News & UpdatesThe Elizabethtown Fair - Aug. 22-27

The Elizabethtown Fair will soon be underway! This fair offers animal, agricultural, competitive and commercial exhibits plus a petting zoo, free entertainment, contests for all ages, rides and great fair food!

Did you know that the Elizabethtown Fair is one of 109 Pennsylvania State Fairs?Each August, the Elizabethtown Fair provides an opportunity for the showcasing of agriculture in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. This is also a time that local civic organizations and church groups use the Fair as their main fund raiser for the year. Other organizations and local businesses use this time to promote themselves.

We encourage those who win contest entries to please submit your name and category for the September Village Living to bhemsch@masonicvillages.org. Look for further info in the Premium Book.

The exhibitor information and tentative schedule for 2016 are now available on their website at etownfair.org.

Thursday, August 4Opera Lancaster Lemonade Concert SeriesMusic That Inspires: Brenton MegeePick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 9 p.m.This very popular local singer, now a tenor in the graduate program at West Chester University, will transport you through time with pieces by great composers and then touch your heart with life changing songs of faith! The concert is located at the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. A free-will offering will take place during intermission. The concert scheduled for 7 p.m.

Saturday, August 6Lancaster British Brass Band at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, LancasterPick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 9 p.m.Lancaster British Brass Band follows the path first laid down in the smoky mill and mining towns of mid-nineteenth century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed instrumentation of 28 players and one conductor, the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners bent on “morale and spiritual uplift.” The unique sound quality of Lancaster Brass band is due to its being composed entirely of brass winds and percussion instruments. The sound of Lancaster British Brass band has been compared to one big, magnificent pipe organ.” The concert scheduled for 7 p.m.

Wednesday, August 10New Holland Summer Concert SeriesPolka QuadsPick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 10 p.m.Let’s Polka! John Salov leads this three piece group through standards such as “Cheese and Crackers Polka,” The Kamnik Polks” and the incomparable “Blue Skirt Waltz”. John is joined on stage by bass player Vinny Horoscock and drummer/vocalist Mark Dubrovec as they delight the audience with their “Cleveland Style” of polka. Note: This is an outdoor concert. If the weather is inclement the concert will be held in the Garden Spot Village Chapel. Concert is scheduled from 7-9 p.m.

Concert is located at the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. A free-will offering will take place at intermission. Concert scheduled for 7 p.m.

Thursday, August 11Ricky Nelson RememberedSponsored by Jim and Marlene ResslerMt. Gretna PlayhousePick up: 6:15 - 6:45 p.m.Return: 10:30 p.m.“Ricky Nelson Remembered” is a unique multi media entertainment event featuring the live music of Ricky Nelson’s hit songs (including “Hello Mary Lou”, “Travelin’ Man”, “Garden Party”) performed by Ricky’s own twin sons Matthew & Gunnar and includes never before seen big screen video footage of the Nelson family with interviews from celebrities influenced by Ricky Nelson. The show appeals to a wide audience and multiple generations and celebrates the life of America’s original ‘Teen Idol’. This concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. Twenty tickets, donated by Jim and Marlene Ressler, will be given away in a lottery system.

Monday, August 15Tour of Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, Lititz

Pick up: 8:30 a.m. Clubhouse; 8:45 a.m. FMCCReturn: 2:30 p.m.Cost per person: $4.50 (payable at Sturgis)Celebrate 150 years of American pretzel baking. Founded in 1861, the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery is the first commercial pretzel bakery in America. Help us celebrate our 150th anniversary this year! Tour the original bakery, get a hands-on-lesson in pretzel twisting, and taste the results of 150 years of pretzel baking heritage. Cost is $4.50 per person and you may pay at Sturgis. The tour is scheduled for 10 a.m. After the tour, a lunch stop will be made at Lititz Family Cupboard. In addition to their regular menu, a lunch buffet is also available. Cost for senior buffet is $8.35.

Thursday, August 18Opera Lancaster Lemonade Concert SeriesBreak From the Blue CollarPick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 9 p.m.Making a distinct mark in the world of barbershop and a cappella music by mixing fresh interpretations of barbershop classics with the exciting sounds of rock & roll. The result is an entertainment experience that can’t be beat. With Zach Bailey, Benjamin Hallowell, Tyler Hart, and Shaun Ressler. This concert is located at the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. A free-will offering will take place at intermission. Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Friday, August 19Barnstormers Baseball Game

Pick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 10 p.m.Cost per person: $18*Come cheer on the Lancaster Barnstormers as they take on the York Revolution. Fireworks along with special guest appearance by Jose Canseco at tonight’s game. You will also receive a free Team Card Set Giveaway. Game scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sunday, August 21Faith United Methodist Church in Lititz presents Weaver BelieversPick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 9 p.m.The Weaver Believer Survival Revival Family Band sings and plays a unique mixture of bluegrass, southern gospel and country music. A free-will offering will take place at intermission. Concert scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tuesday, August 23Elizabethtown Fair

Pick up: 5-5:30 p.m.Return: 8 p.m.Each year the Elizabethtown Fair showcases agriculture in Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Many civic organizations and church groups use the fair as their principle fund raiser for the year. It is also an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to promote themselves. A wide variety of delicious fair food is also available.

Pick up: 5:30 - 6 p.m.Return: 8:45 p.m.Fire in the Glenn (Celtic) stage two sponsored by Masonic Village is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. For those interested in driving over to the fair grounds, earlier in the day Kyle and Kelly Magic and Illusions on stage two is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Friday, August 26Elizabethtown Fair - Day Trip

Pick up: 1:30 - 2 p.m.Return: 4 p.m.Take the opportunity to visit the craft exhibits located in the Brethren Church located by the Fair Grounds. Several of our Masonic Village residents have entered their craft items. It’s also a good time to walk around the Fair grounds and check out the midway since the crowds are pretty slim during the day. A few food vendors are available.

Monday, August 29Knoebels Grove Amusement ParkElysburg, PA

Pick up: 8 a.m. Clubhouse; 8:15 a.m. FMCCReturn: 4 p.m.Knoebels was born on July 4, 1926 with the crystal pool and a carousel. Since then, it has remained a place where families can go for some good, old fashioned fun without breaking the bank. Throughout the years, we’ve continued to add brand new attractions and classic rides of days gone by. Plan to join us during our 90th year and discover for yourself why so many have made Knoebels a family tradition. No charge for admission, you can pay-per-ride.

Thursday, September 1Reading Fightin’ Phils Baseball GameFirst Energy Stadium in ReadingPick up: 4:30 – 5 p.m.Return: 10 p.m.Cost: $14Located in Reading. Come out and cheer on the Reading Fightin Phils as they take on the Portland Seadogs. This is the last game of the their regular season. The Fightin’ Phils are currently in first place so they will most likely be heading to the play offs. It will be Fan Appreciation Night. A lot of free prizes, giveaways and Klunker Cars. Wednesday, September 28Rainbow Comedy Playhouse“Is There Life After 50?”

Pick up: 10 - 10:30 a.m.Return: 4:30 p.m.Cost per person: $48*Three couples, all past fifty, have been friends forever. Once a year they get together for a mini vacation and to catch up with their lives. This year, the ladies have chosen a health spa for their destination; what a fun time. Ooops, they haven’t told the husbands yet! Please RSVP by Aug. 31.

Masonic Village Travel Club

All residents are invited to join the Masonic Village Travel Club. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 27, in the Keystone Room at 10 a.m. Annual dues are $5.

Trips planned for 2016 and 2017 include:

• Homestead in Virginia from December 5-7, 2016

• Southern Caribbean cruise from February 13-25, 2017

Glenn Miller, One-Man-BandTuesday, August 2 at 7 p.m.Keystone RoomGlenn performs well over 350 shows each year. The arsenal of instruments that Glenn plays includehybrid custom accordions, trombone, trumpets, harmonicas, flugelhorn, baritone, ukulele, keyboardand more! As a vocalist, his ability to sing harmonylive with himself is unique. The sound he creates isequivalent to a 14-piece band. His style of music ranges from the big bands to jazz to rock-n-roll.

Kate McCutchan, Pianist Saturday, August 6 at 1 p.m.Grand Lodge Hall Assembly RoomKate McCutchan will entertain you with her beautiful playing and graceful singing. A recurring performer at Masonic Village, she has been teaching piano for the last 20 years, and performing just as long. In addition to teaching and performing, she is the Music Director for Unity Church of Harrisburg since 1992.

JCM 50’s and 60’s BandMonday, August 8 at 6 p.m.Grand Lodge Hall VerandaThe JCM BAND from the Harrisburg area plays all 50’s and 60’s music. They have been around since 2011, and have had success playing songs from your favorite memories back when things were simpler and people had a great time going to dances and sock hops. This is an evening outdoor concert on the veranda of the Grand Lodge Hall building (overlooking the formal gardens) in the Village Green Area beginning at 6 p.m. with music and fun on through till 7:30 p.m. Join us for an evening designed to get your toes a tapping and your knees a rockin’! You’ll feel like you traveled back in time to a simpler era. Oldies garb is optional.

New Holland Band Concert Sunday, August 14 at 3 p.m.Brossman BallroomThe New Holland Band, consisting of fifes and drums, was formed in 1829 as part of a regional milita unit. The band is made up of a diverse group

of professionals, semi-professionals and student musicians. Under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Laudermilch. Assistant Music Director is Leon Hillard.

Rizzetta’s Tones Saturday, August 20 at 7 p.m.Brossman BallroomThe name Rizzetta’s Tones is in honor of Sam Rizzetta – who was one of the largest moving forces in bringing the hammer dulcimer back from extinction in the early 1900s to its former 1000+ year glory. With a varied repertoire, the majority of the music is new to audiences and includes music from many countries of the world plus many original compositions. Band members include Linda Lohr on silver flute, high whistle, hand percussion, and vocals; Amanda Wells on guitar, harmonica, and vocals; Randy Kochel on hammer dulcimer, Greek bouzouki, Irish button accordion, guitar, varied other instruments and vocals; and Bill Stine on hammer dulcimer, whistles from low to high and vocals.

Masonic Village Art Studio & Gallery The Masonic Village Art Studio and Gallery will be featuring during August a display of photography by Bette Wenrich, who resides in McKee 1. She displayed some of her work at Show and Tell, so if you saw it you know it is quite impressive. Our featured Art Association artist during August is the Pen and Ink work of Wes Landis, who resides in Sycamore North. Please come and support your fellow residents. The posted hours of the Gallery are 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, but if you see the door open please come in.

Make it a point to stop in and enjoy all the different types of art on display from both the residents and employees of Masonic Village. Looking forward to seeing you.

Temple Avenue Jazz Garden Concert Monday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Formal GardensCome out to the Formal Gardens and enjoy our third outdoor concert summer, featuring the fresh talent of Temple Avenue Jazz. You may bring your own blanket or lawn chair or choose one of the seats provided. We’ll add a cool beverage, then sit back, relax and enjoy an evening out with friends, music and fun! There is bus transportation, veranda seating as an available option, and the bad weather alternate location is the Deike Auditorium.

Temple Avenue is a young jazz quintet that features the dynamic vocalist Chelsea Reed. The group, consisting mostly of graduates from Temple University’s prestigious jazz program, brings a fresh, creative and energetic approach to their repertoire of classic favorites and little-known gems.

Ray Laubenstein’s 50’s & 60’s Dance Night Saturday, August 27, 7-9 p.m.Brossman BallroomCome out for a fun night of dancing or simply listening. Ray will be playing songs previously requested by residents, including favorite 50’s and 60’s tunes. Light refreshments along with Ray’s famous rice pudding will be served! Tomato Salad with Edamame Succotash Ingredients:3 Tablespoons olive oil¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)2 cups frozen soybeans (edamame), thawed2 cups fresh or frozen whole kernel corn, thawed3 lbs. heirloom tomatoes, cored and sliced ¼ inch thick¾ cup chopped sweet red pepper ½ cup sliced green onion 2 Tablespoons snipped fresh mint

2 Tablespoons lemon juice ½ teaspoon salt, divided2 Tablespoons snipped fresh flat-leaf Italian parsley ¼ teaspoon ground black pepperDirections:Heat oil and crushed red pepper in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 1 minute. Add edamame, corn and sweet red pepper. Cook and stir for 4 minutes. Add green onion; cook and stir for 3-4 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add lemon juice, parsley, mint and ¼ teaspoon salt. Stir to combine; remove from heat. Arrange tomato slices on salad plates or platter. Sprinkle with remaining ¼ teaspoon salt. Spoon warm vegetables over tomatoes.
