Thank you so much for being a part of this special library event!
president, board of directorsLISA BORCHERT
executive directorRICHARD C. MILLER, III
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank everyone for their generous support. This has been a year like
no other, but with your help, and the hard work and innovation of our amazing library sta, I am confident we will rise
to the challenges before us today.
Andrew Carnegie once said, “A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a
never failing spring in the desert.” Together, we will continue to be that oasis in our community. The place we connect,
not only to information and resources, but to each other. While our current circumstances demand that we redefine how
we ‘connect’, we will continue to use our resources and creativity to ensure that we continue this mission. As Rick’s
message outlines, we are well on our way.
We are truly grateful for your willingness to share your time, talent, and treasure with us. While this very event shows
our ability to adapt, we look forward to “sea-ing” you, in person, again next year.
“Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with that there is.”
-Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea
For nine years, I have wrien a message to welcome and thank aendees at our annual Gala. While it is always a
struggle to come up with new ways to say “thank you,” this year’s task is a dierent sort of challenge. We are all well
aware that our world continues to struggle with a pandemic that has greatly altered the way we live, work, and relax.
The marvelous evening, that our volunteers work so hard to create, will not take place this year. Even so, the Osterhout
Free Library will still benefit thanks to the creativity and generosity of so many people.
A few months ago, library programs were halted and in-person service was virtually eliminated. Our library was
fortunate to have a strong online presence that allowed us to continue serving the community during even the darkest
days. We oered virtual reading and learning material. Our resources were devoted to increasing online information.
We adapted our programs to hold a massive online countywide summer reading series, teens participated in virtual
treasure hunts, and adults were able to learn new skills with online learning opportunities. Early on, we began to oer
pickup service for books, answering research questions over the phone, and having appointments for public access
computers. Today, our library is open for in-person service. The way we serve the public may be dierent and you may
see changes inside the library to help foster a healthier environment, but seeing parents and children walking through
our doors gives us a new hope.
This evening may not take place in the seing that normally accompanies our Gala, but there is still much to be grateful
for. Most of us will weather the storm and return to a more normal way of life. Our downtowns will thrive with activity,
schools will open to students, and libraries will once again welcome children to storytimes. Until that day, please accept
my thanks for supporting the Osterhout Free Library. I look forward to personally greeting you next year at the library Gala.
annual campaign chairsTHE BORLAND FAMILY
The Borland Family are all partners in the community general practice law firm Borland and Borland LLP. They
are longtime residents of downtown Wilkes-Barre. As such, they have had front row seats to the benefits the
Osterhout Free Library has for the city and broader community. From childhood bus rides to the library to pick
up books before a banana split at Woolworths, to aer school aernoons studying and researching before ice
cream at Boscov’s, the library has been part of their lives. As coaches for the Meyers Speech and Debate team,
they have seen how giving students access to information that opens their eyes and broadens their world changes
their future. As Valley Santa volunteers, the Borlands have seen that one of the greatest gis you can give a child
is a book. In addition to their community involvement, the Borlands spend their free time traveling and being
die-hard fans of the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Lakers, and all locations of the Penguins.
The Osterhout Free Library is particularly important in a world in which the opportunities for students to learn,
research, or just learn the joy of reading are becoming limited as schools eliminate their libraries. The library has
had a tremendous impact on the lives of the Borland family and they are proud to support that important
tradition in our community.

evergreen honoreesDR. THOMAS & VANESSA BOTZMAN
Tom and Vanessa Botzman became an integral part of the fabric of our community upon their arrival in Northeastern
Pennsylvania from Maryland seven years ago. Although they have returned to Ohio, where they have deep family ties, they
accomplished much during their time in our area.
Vanessa began her career as a registered nurse in 1979 and worked for many years as a hospital sta nurse in Ohio. Upon
their move to Maryland, Vanessa volunteered for St Mary’s County Public Schools and was a Leonardtown Elementary
School volunteer of the year. She then volunteered and subsequently worked as an AmeriCorps Volunteer for St. Mary’s
County Department of Aging Meals on Wheels agency. Vanessa served for six years as a school nurse for three Catholic
elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Washington.
During her time in our area, Vanessa shared her talent caring for others in Northeastern Pennsylvania as a substitute driver,
board member, and secretary for Meals on Wheels of Wyoming Valley. Vanessa also served as a registered nurse volunteer at
the Care and Concern Clinic at St. John the Evangelist Church in Piston, as a board member for the Osterhout Free Library,
and at the Catherine McAuley House in Plymouth. She was also a member of Misericordia University’s Friends of the Mary
Kintz Bevevino Library in addition to aending and participating in various events on campus.
Prior to coming to Misericordia, Dr. Botzman served as vice president for business and finance at St. Mary’s College of
Maryland, where he was also professor of economics. Dr. Botzman previously served for 15 years on the faculty at Mount
Union College (now the University of Mount Union) in Ohio. As of July 1, 2020, he assumed the role of President there,
returning to his Ohio roots.
Earlier in his career, he was a visiting professor and Fulbright Scholar at the University of the Americas in Mexico City,
Mexico, teaching there four times from 1992 through 1996. He was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow
in 2002. Dr. Botzman worked in private industry prior to becoming a faculty member and is the inventor of 12 U.S. patents.
Dr. Botzman ocially became the 13th president of Misericordia University on July 1, 2013. During his tenure, the university
undertook its largest fundraising campaign in history, Now for Tomorrow, raising over $36 million to date. Now for Tomor-
row is funding a large portion of the ongoing construction of the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Science Center, slated to be
fully completed in late Spring of 2021. It will be the university’s largest academic building.
Other notable accomplishments at Misericordia during the last seven years include increasing the Ruth Mahews Bourger
Women with Children program from ten to sixteen families, with a scheduled increase to twenty families in August 2020.
Misericordia also renovated two academic buildings and acquired the adjacent Payne Printery building for future use by
student life and academics. Athletics added men’s volleyball, and, in 2019, an intercollegiate e-sports program began.
Tom has served on the boards of the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, the Boy Scouts Northeastern Pennsylvania
Council, the Back Mountain Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce. He was active in
the higher education field beyond our area, recently serving as the lead president of the Conference for Mercy Higher
Education as well as chair of the president’s council with the Middle Atlantic Conference. He was a member of the board for
the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania and continues to serve on the tax policy commit-
tee for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
evergreen honoreesDR. THOMAS & VANESSA BOTZMAN
We are proud to honor Dr. Thomas and Vanessa Botzman as our third annual Osterhout Free Library
Evergreen honorees. We chose a lovely glass Evergreen Tree for it’s symbolic meaning.
Evergreens, by their nature, remain green and functional for many growing seasons.
According to Merriam Webster, something evergreen means retaining freshness or interest;
continually relevant; not limited in applicability to a particular event or date.
The evergreen tree represents longevity and virtue, strength, stoicism, invincibility, determination
and revitalization. These are all qualities aributed to Vanessa and Tom Botzman; and, we could
not think of anything that was more symbolic to honor Vanessa and Tom Botzman for their
steadfast and loyal support to the Osterhout Free Library and so many other fine institutions
throughout our community. We will miss the Botzmans daily presence in our community,
but they will always be welcomed home here in the Wyoming Valley.
