New Retention Standards and

Academic Probation

Effective Fall 2010,

new Retention Standards and Academic Probation requirements

as outlined in the table below will be used in determining students’ Academic

Standing at the University.

At the end of the Fall 2010 academic semester, academic status will be based

on the quality hours attempted and the required cumulative GPA described in

the appropriate category listed in the above table.

The current practices listed below will continue:

Students' academic standing will be printed on their academic transcripts and

grade reports at the end of each semester.

One of four academic standing categories will be recorded, Good Standing,

Probation, Suspension, or Readmitted on Probation/Suspension Appeal.

Categories Quality Hours Attempted Required Cumulative GPA

One

0-15 hours attempted Not less than 1.5 cumulative GPA

Two

16-30 hours attempted Not less than 1.7 cumulative GPA

Three

31-45 hours attempted Not less than 1.8 cumulative GPA

Four

46-59 hours attempted Not less than 1.9 cumulative GPA

Five

60 and above hours attempted Not less than 2.0 cumulative GPA

6

Former Students who were not enrolled

during the previous semester must

complete an application for readmission.

All New Students including part-time

students must complete their admission

credentials and be accepted for admission.

The following websites will give you more

detailed information on admission

requirements, application deadlines, and

contact information for admissions staff:

Undergraduate Admissions

Graduate Admissions

Academic Advisement is offered to each

student at Tennessee State University.

Advisement is required for all new freshman

and new transfer students before

registration.

Students must contact the department of

their major for advisement. However,

students who have not declared a major,

those enrolled in two (2) or more

basic/developmental courses, transient

students, and ―special‖ students receive

advisement through the Advisement

Center, located in the Learning Resource

Center (LRC).

Class listings on the Web are accurate as of

the time you view them. Click on the

Banner Services tab in myTSU and select

the Student tab, Registration menu. Click on Look Up Classes and select the

desired term. Select at least one subject

to search for course sections. If you

know the course number, you may enter it

in the ―Course Number‖ field (e.g., 1010).

To select all subjects, select the first

subject, hold down the shift key, and select

last subject—all subjects will be selected.

Select an attribute to search across all

subject areas, then select Class Search.

For best results, leave remaining fields at

their default settings and click Class

Search. You may register for a displayed

class by placing a checkmark in the box to

the left of the class, scrolling to the bottom

of the screen, and clicking Register.

If a class requires a corequisite (e.g. BIOL

1110 and 1111), click on the Display

Corequisites link at the bottom of the

Look Up Classes or Add or Drop page.

The labs or other corequisites are listed

immediately below the lecture/class to

which they correspond. Write down the

CRN for both the lecture and lab section.

Go back to the Add or Drop page and

enter both CRNs at the same time to

register. If you do not enter both at the

same time, yow will receive a Corequisite

Error message.

If you are not a student yet, you may view

available courses by clicking here.

Bursar's Office Website

Students must pay fees and confirm

enrollment in order to secure courses for

which they have registered.

Access myTSU and follow the instructions

listed here in order to pay fees and confirm

enrollment.

The Bursar’s Office website publishes

important and updated information

concerning tuition, fees, payment, and

confirmation. Please be sure to check the

site regularly.

AUDITING

All requests to change from credit to audit

or audit to credit must be processed on or

before the last day to add a class.

Students who wish to audit a course must

contact the Records Office at

[email protected].

Audits may not be used to meet degree

requirements, and the audit fee is the

same as the credit fee.

CHANGE OF MAJORS

Change of Major forms may be found at

www.tnstate.edu/records. Students must

contact the department of the new major

and complete and submit the form. The

new department will assign a new adviser

to the student, and the student must

submit the signed Change of Major form

to the Records Office.

CHANGE OF NAME OR ADDRESS

Students should immediately update

addresses or other information if they

move or information changes. To review

and correct addresses, phone numbers,

email addresses, and emergency contacts,

login to myTSU and select the Banner

Services tab, and click the Personal

Information tab.

Students may only change permanent

addresses within the Records Office

because the permanent address serves

several purposes and must be monitored.

For example, residency (in-state or out-

of-state) is monitored in conjunction with

permanent address. Requests to update

the permanent address must be made in

the Records Office, Floyd-Payne Campus

Center, Suite 305.

Name changes are processed in the

Records Office. It is the student’s

responsibility to inform instructors and/or

advisers of name changes that occur

during the semester.

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to attend each

class for which they are registered and

should not attend classes for which they

are not officially registered.

Though some faculty may not check

attendance in a conventional manner,

attendance is expected, and absence or

nonparticipation is recorded and will have

an effect on receipt or repayment of

various financial aid and scholarships.

CLASS CANCELLATION

The University reserves the right to cancel

classes due to low enrollment. RODP

courses are cancelled or adjusted at the

discretion of the Tennessee Board of

Regents. It may be necessary for

modifications to be made in locations and

teachers listed for courses.

CLASS CANCELLATION DUE TO WEATHER

To determine if classes are cancelled,

students should listen to area radio and

television stations and access the

University homepage at www.tnstate.edu. CONFIDENTIALITY OF STUDENT RECORDS

In compliance with the Family Educational

Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and

Tennessee State University’s policy on the

Disclosure of Educational Records, a

student may grant the University the right

to release confidential information such as

grades, academic progress reports, class

attendance records, financial aid,

disciplinary actions, and financial account

information, to

parent(s)/guardians(s)/spouse by

completing the ―Student Release of

Confidential Information Form‖ provided

at www.tnstate.edu/records.

Tennessee State University may disclose

Directory Information without prior written

consent unless the student completes and

returns to the Records Office the Request

to Prevent Disclosure of Directory

Information Form. Tennessee State

University designates the following items

General

Information

11

as Directory Information: student name,

address, telephone listing, institutional

electronic mail address, photograph(s),

videotape/digital image(s), date and place

of birth, major field of study,

classification, participation in officially

recognized activities and sports, weight

and height of members of athletic teams,

dates of attendance, degree(s), honors

and academic awards received, and the

most recent previous educational agency

or institution attended by the student.

FERPA does allow the University to

disclose certain records, without consent

to the following parties or under the

following conditions: School officials with

legitimate educational interest; Other

schools to which a student is transferring;

Specified officials for audit or evaluation

purposes; Appropriate parties in

connection with financial aid to a student;

Organizations conducting certain studies

for or on behalf of the school; Accrediting

organizations; To comply with a judicial

order or lawfully issued subpoena;

Appropriate officials in cases of health and

safety emergencies; and state and local

authorities, within a juvenile justice

system, pursuant to specific state law.

Please visit www.tnstate.edu/records for a

full explanation of these policies.

COMPASS/ACT/SAT COURSE PLACEMENT

Students who are placed into courses

based on the COMPASS Test, an academic

placement test, or ACT/SAT scores must

enroll in and complete the designated

courses in sequence. Tennessee Board of

Regents policy prohibits students from

dropping ACT/COMPASS prescribed

courses except under extenuating

circumstances and with the approval of

the Director of Academic Enrichment.

Additional information can be obtained by

calling (615) 963-5521 or accessing the

academic Enrichment web page at

http://www.tnstate.edu/AEAO.

COURSE LOADS

Twelve semester hours constitutes full-

time status for undergraduate students for

the Fall and Spring semesters, while full-

time for graduate students is 9 hours.

Course loads of 18 hours in the Fall and

Spring and 12 hours in the Summer are

permitted without special approval for

undergraduate students in good academic

standing. A three-hour overload may be

approved during the Fall and Spring for

sophomores, juniors and seniors with

cumulative grade point averages of 3.0

and above. A three-hour overload is

permitted for graduating seniors (those

who are certified by their advisers as

prospective graduates for the current

semester—not just senior classification).

The maximum course load for any

undergraduate student during the Fall and

Spring is 21 hours, including courses

being taken at TSU and any other

institution. All overloads must be

approved prior to the student enrolling in

the course. The maximum course load for

undergraduate students for summer (at

TSU and other institutions) is 15 hours in

regular sessions (6 Summer 1, 6 Summer

II, 3 Full) combined. The three-hour

overload may be approved for

sophomores, juniors and seniors with

cumulative degree averages of 3.0 and

above and for prospective summer

graduates.

COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM

Degree level courses are numbered from

1000 to 8999. Undergraduate courses are

numbered from 1000 to 4999. Courses,

which are primarily master’s level, are

5000 and 6000. Doctoral level courses

are 7000 and 8000. Developmental

courses numbered 0700-0899 may not be

used for degree purposes. These courses

do satisfy requirements for financial aid.

COURSE PREREQUISITES AND RESTRICTIONS

Some courses require specific course

prerequisites or have other registration

controls which require that students have

specific majors, classification, candidacy,

etc., before registration can occur. Check

12

the current catalog for prerequisite or

other requirements. If you have met the

requirements and still receive a

registration error message, please contact

the academic department of the course

and/or major adviser. Courses that are

considered ―co-requisites‖ require

registration for both sections at the same

time in the same transaction.

COURSE/SUBJECT ABBREVIATIONS

Alphabetic listings of course/subject

abbreviations are included on page 7 of

this guide.

COURSE/UNIVERSITY WITHDRAWALS

All class withdrawals must be

processed via myTSU with the

following exceptions:

Student Athletes must complete and

submit a withdrawal form to the Records

Office. The form must be signed by the

athlete’s adviser.

Students withdrawing from developmental

studies courses must complete and submit

a withdrawal form to the Records Office.

The form must be signed by a

developmental studies adviser.

Students withdrawing from all courses

(University Withdrawal) must report to the

Counseling Center, complete the

necessary forms, and submit the signed

form(s) to the Records Office.

DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES

The Office of Disabled Student Services

seeks to coordinate university-wide

services available to students with current

medical/psychological disabilities.

Services range from providing physical

accommodations on campus to helping

students with learning disabilities succeed

in classroom activities. For additional

information, contact the Office of Disabled

Students at (615) 963-7400. DISTANCE EDUCATION

Distance Education at Tennessee State

University allows the Institution to extend

its resources in the areas of instruction

and service to citizens within the state of

Tennessee and to persons around the

world. Classes are offered through

various technological delivery systems

including video independent study,

interactive video instruction, TSU Online,

and the Regents Online Degree Program

(RODP). All distance education classes

are planned and conducted in accordance

with the academic requirements and

regulations of participating academic

colleges and schools. TSU online courses

are designated in the course schedule as

section 98 and RODP courses are

designated in the course schedule as

section R50. Students enrolled in a TSU

Online or RODP course are required to

attend a face-to-face orientation or

complete an orientation module online.

For additional information, go to myTSU

and click the Distance Education tab.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

For information about applying for

federal/state financial aid (including loans,

grants, work-study, etc.), deadlines for

financial aid applications, financial aid

satisfactory academic progress, the

federal financial aid return policy, and

general financial aid information, visit the

Office of Financial Aid by clicking the link.

For scholarship information and criteria for

incoming freshmen, currently enrolled

students, transfer students, and others,

please visit www.tnstate.edu/scholarships.

GRADES AND ACADEMIC STANDING

Students may view their grades and

academic standing online each semester

by selecting the appropriate option on

myTSU. Students may also request a

transcript for a complete record of grades.

Grades and academic standing for the

current term and the two previous terms

are displayed. No student may view

grades on myTSU until all debts or

obligations owed to TSU have been

satisfied.

It is the student’s responsibility to be

aware of grades and academic standing.

Academic standing could be good

standing, probation, or suspension. An

13

email is sent to the student’s myTSU

email account if he/she is placed on

probation or suspension, but a student

should always check his/her academic

standing via myTSU after each semester.

If a student is placed on probation, the

student must attain a 2.00 GPA in the

next term or increase the cumulative GPA

to one of the following retention

standards:

0-15 hours

attempted

Not less than 1.5

cumulative GPA

16-30 hours

attempted

Not less than 1.7

cumulative GPA

31-45 hours

attempted

Not less than 1.8

cumulative GPA

46-59 hours

attempted

Not less than 1.9

cumulative GPA

60 and above hours

attempted

Not less than 2.0

cumulative GPA and

satisfactory

completion of all

developmental or

remedial courses

A student on academic probation who

does not meet either the current term

GPA or cumulative GPA listed above

during the next term enrolled will be

suspended.

If a transfer student is admitted on

probation or has been previously

suspended from another school, then the

above standard must be met.

Students previously suspended are not

eligible for probationary status.

If a student is suspended, any future

registration is deleted and the student

cannot attend TSU for the length of the

suspension. A student can appeal a

suspension. Students should also be

aware of the difference between a

financial aid suspension due to

unsatisfactory progress and an academic

suspension based on grades and GPA. A

financial aid suspension means the

student can still attend TSU; however, the

student will not receive financial aid. An

academic suspension means the student

cannot attend TSU for the length of the

suspension even if eligible for financial

aid. These are two different suspensions,

and there are two different appeal

processes that are independent of each

other.

HEPATITIS B AND MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS INFORMATION

The state of Tennessee mandates that

each public or private postsecondary

institution in the state provide information

concerning hepatitis B and meningococcal

meningitis to all students entering the

institution for the first time. New students

must acknowledge they have read this

information before they can register for

classes. This information and

acknowledgment statement are

automatically displayed when new

students register for classes on myTSU. If

students are under the age of 18, a parent

or legal guardian must sign the form.

Please click this link to access the

Meningococcal Meningitis and Hepatitis

B/Immunization Health History form.

HIGH SCHOOL DEFICIENCIES

Students admitted to Tennessee State

University with high school unit

deficiencies will be required to remove

these deficiencies by earning credit in one

or more of the courses listed at this site.

College courses taken to address course

deficiencies in high school preparation and

to meet minimum university admission

requirements may be used concurrently to

satisfy certain general education

requirements with the exception of foreign

language.

More detailed information on High School

Deficiencies may be found by clicking this

link.

HOLDS

All holds must be cleared before

registration. Holds are placed on student

accounts if money is owed to the

university, certain advisement is required,

14

admissions requirements or testing has

not been completed, etc. Access myTSU

to determine which department has placed

a hold on your record. Clear the hold(s)

and resume registration. Holds will

prevent adds and drops.

ID CARD

All students, faculty and staff are required

to have a TSU issued ID card in their

possession while on campus. Students

must obtain an ID card once they have

registered for their first semester of

classes.

The TSU ID card is used as a ―debit card,‖

and all financial aid refunds are deposited

into an account assigned to the card.

Students may use the card in

washer/dryers in the residence halls, and

those who have purchased meal plans

may use the card in the cafeteria.

Cards are also used to check out materials

in the University library. The TSU ID card

webpage provides detailed information on

card use. The ID Center is located in

McCord Hall, Room 20.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The information Technology Help Desk is

available when school is in session by

phone 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. M-F, and

accepts walk-in requests from 7:30 a.m. –

4:30 p.m. M-F.

Experienced personnel are available to

assist students with password resets,

myTSU login issues, dormitory network

problems (e.g. cable television, wireless

and non-wireless computer connections,

etc), and computer issues within

University Computer Labs. The Help Desk

does not assist with non-university related

technology issues.

The Help Desk is located in McCord Hall,

Room 20 and may be contacted by calling

963-7777.

MAJORS

Students who have not determined a

major upon their matriculation into the

University are assisted in selecting a
