Each day, campers will learn English riding and participate in horse science activities including grooming, care of the horse, and barn maintenance. Campers are assigned a horse with individual skill level in mind. Quiet, dependable horses are chosen for more inexperience riders; more responsive horses are chosen for more advanced riders.

** Campers are required to wear boots, helmets, and long pants while grooming and riding. Helmets are provided by Hantesa. Boots are also available. **

For inexperienced riders, basic riding skills such as stopping, starting, and guiding a horse are taught. Campers with more advanced skills will work on higher level skills like posting, trotting, and cantering. Jumping lessons are available for the most advanced riders. Campers learn to care for their assigned horse as well as recognize some of its unique behavior characteristics. Riding lessons depend on day to day weather conditions.

Campers also participate in swimming and other traditional summer camp activities that make this camp a unique and fun way to spend summer days. A swim suit and towel should be brought every day.

Staff reserve the right to remove a rider from the horse if either is in danger. Camp Hantesa provides trained horses and trained staff for our riding programs.

Come to learn how to craft a pottery bowl, participate in a digital photography scavenger hunt, write for the Camp Hantesa newsletter, and make a tye-dye shirt (be sure to bring a white shirt!). There will be many opportunities for the campers to explore their creative self.

July 21-27: WOHA Week (Grades 1-12) “We welcome you to Hantesa, we’re mightly glad you’re here.” WOHA Week features long time Camp Hantesa traditions, some dating all the way back to our founding in 1919. We will sing traditional camp songs, learn camp stories, and of course, there will be many traditional Hantesa activities to participate in. Come to learn our traditions and make memories and new traditions of your own for Hantesa’s next 94 years.

July 7-13, July 14-20, July 21-27: Herman’s Ranch (Grades 4-12) If horses are your passion, you have to try Herman’s Ranch. No special experience or equipment is necessary. Campers spend an hour and a half each day in English style riding lessons (weather permitting) honing riding skills at any level. Beginners learn the basics such as starting, stopping, and guiding their horse. More experienced riders work on posting, trotting, cantering, and even jumping for advanced riders. The Leadership Challenge/Buckaroo program can be the first step. During this two week overnight camp session, campers begin to define themselves as leaders at camp and in life. Activities include team challenges, studying mentoring styles, developing citizenship through service learning, and interacting as role models with younger campers.

Similarly, Buckaroos begin working on their leadership and horsemanship skills. Along with learning to be a leader and learning to give back to camp, Buckaroos spend time at Herman’s Ranch, developing their teaching abilities and horse knowledge as well as increasing their riding skills.

Typical apprenticeships are two summers in length. Apprentices and Wranglers build on leadership, communication and program delivery skills. Lessons and live-in studies in units across camp allow apprentices to learn directly from our exceptional staff the responsibilities of role modeling and caring for our campers. Wranglers participate in the same activities as apprentices, however they conduct their live-ins at Herman’s Ranch.

July 28-August 3: Canoe Outpost (Grades 7-12) The canoe outpost trip is an amazing opportunity to take your love of the outdoors to the next level. Canoe trippers will be shuttled to one of Iowa’s premiere canoeing locations to start a 4-day, 3-night canoe and camping trip. Trippers will canoe during the day and camp along the water at night. This trip will incorporate skills in canoeing such as: different paddle strokes, portaging, canoe safety, and overall canoe technique. Campers will also have the opportunity to broaden camping skills such as: packing and planning for a long trip, fire building, outdoor cooking, and much more. This trip is bound to be an unforgettable experience!
