The 2012-13 School Year in Photos These pictures give a glimpse of life at Crefeld. Whether it be eating pies during Pi Day festivities, attending the all school field trip in Center City, seeing the final score of the student/staff basketball game, or participating in spring trips, a student’s time at Crefeld is quite extraordinary.

Alumni NewsMandy Siegel ’09 Earlier this year, Mandy was training two male coatis (think South American version of a raccoon) to stand up on their back legs on command. Having the coatis trained to do this is handy because it allows keepers to visually inspect their undersides and front limbs to check for any lumps or cuts to make sure they are healthy. Training such as this is a valuable tool in zoos because when animals can preform simple tasks such as this on command, it reduces the amount of times they have to be anesthetized for simple health checks and procedures. Also, for intelligent, inquisitive animals such as coatis, it serves as a great form of cognitive enrichment.  As you can see in the photo, Mandy was successful and the coati that she worked with stood up and touched the target stick.

Jenny Kanevsky ’82 is living and working in Austin, Texas with her husband and two sons. She is the author of one novel, Chosen Quarry, and is currently working on another. Check out her blog which focuses on topics like motherhood, marriage, women’s issues and comedy.

Liz Salter ’05 is the Volunteer Coordinator for Carpenter’s Shelter, the largest homeless shelter in Northern Virginia. Carpenter’s Shelter serves over 1,000 homeless and formerly homeless children and adults each year. Their mission is to support the homeless to achieve sustainable independence through shelter, guidance, education and advocacy. Great work, Liz!

In Memory of Zo EdwardsIt is with great sadness that we note the passing of Zo Edwards, Crefeld’s Business Manager from 2003 to 2011. Zo retired in 2011 with a plan to move to her much beloved Orlando, Florida with her youngest son, Chris. She was able to fulfill that dream, but was shortly thereafter diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor which cut short her life and much deserved retirement. A single parent herself to three children, Zo was a tireless advocate for single parents who sacrificed greatly to send their children to Crefeld. She arranged individualized payment plans, forged relationships with parents, and brought their personal stories to the financial aid committee meetings. We are accepting donations made in Zo’s honor to support financial aid for current and new Crefeld families. Please contact the development office to pledge a gift at 215-242-5545.

Alumni let us know what you’re up to. You can send us updates through the website.

From the Development Office:

Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program

Do you own a business? The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) allows business owners to take a credit against PA taxes for up to 90% of the amount donated to Crefeld.

EITC contributions support The Crefeld School's scholarship program, which offsets the cost of education for members of our diverse student body who would otherwise not be able to attend Crefeld.

Who qualifies? Anyone who pays: Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax; Title Insurance Companies Shares Tax; Insurance Premiums Tax; Mutual Thrift Institution Tax; Personal Income Tax of S Corporation Shareholders; or Personal Income Tax of Partnership Partners. Typically, these taxes are paid by Corporations, Partnerships, LLCs, Banks, Insurance Companies, Title Companies, and Mutual Thrift Companies. Partnerships can split a gift among several EITC-approved nonprofits.

Now is the time to think about participating. Talk to your tax preparer about this program. They can guide you through the process. For more information, please visit www.newpa.com/eitc or call the Crefeld Development Office at 215-242-5545.

8836 Crefeld Street Philadelphia, PA 19118

Last year, 15 Crefeld students benefitted from scholarships provided, in part, by the EITC program!
