K evin Lewis lived in the residential pro- gram at Northern Home for Children in the mid 1990’s. In his address to the children and families assembled at the Annual Children’s Awards Ceremony on June 16th, Kevin described a childhood absent of strong parental influence and wrought with challenges and obstacles to overcome. While at Northern Home, Kevin attended Roxborough High School. This past March, Kevin successfully completed the rig- orous training curriculum and was inducted as an officer in the Philadelphia Police Force. Standing proudly in his crisp blue uniform, Kevin spoke from his heart, encouraging the children assembled to work hard, to sur- round themselves with positive people and to stay out of trouble. The Annual Children’s Awards Ceremony recognizes children from all of Northern Home’s programs who have demonstrated improvement and excellence in areas including academics, socialization, athletics, and attendance in school. In addi- tion, graduates from either middle school or high school are also recognized for this important milestone in their young lives. Shortly prior to his graduating from the Police Academy, Kevin reconnected with Northern Home for Children, where three of the staff members who made a significant impact on him during his stay, are still staff members of the agency. Kevin Weber (pictured with Officer Lewis), Northern Home’s Director of Recreation and Volunteer Activities has been with Northern Home for over 25 years. Mr. Weber remarked that even as a small child, Kevin Lewis demon- strated a special spark that the staff worked to grow strong. Northern Home’s President and CEO was the Director of Behavioral Health when Kevin lived on the campus. He remembers Kevin fondly and welcomed him back to Northern Home with open arms. Sonja McQuillar, Director of Health Information Services has maintained com- munication with Officer Lewis over the past 10 years since he left the agency. Ms. McQuillar was the Administrative Supervisor during Kevin’s stay here at Northern Home. Kevin often came to her office to visit and talk to her about issues and concerns he was facing. Kevin always had a vision and a dream of becoming a responsible adult. Everyone at Northern Home for Children congratulates Kevin Lewis on his recent accomplishments and looks forward to his serving as a mentor for the young men and women currently engaged in Northern Home’s various programs.
