Writing
I have been so impressed with the writing you have been sending in - keep it
up! You are all such fantastic writers and I'm so glad you are still practising this
skill!
You all know that in Year 5, we focus on improving our writing! When you
complete one of these tasks, write a draft version, then edit and improve it for
your final version! You can create your own WILF or use the one on this page
(below the tasks). Do it as if it’s just our normal English lessons!
Task 1: Letter writing – This week, I would like it if you could write a letter to
your future self. It is up to you how far in the future - maybe one year, maybe
ten! Your letter should include a little bit of information about the world we are
currently living in and how you feel about it. You should also write down what
your hopes for the future are. You don't have to send examples of this task if
you don't want to, but if you can, find an envelope and write your name on it,
with the date you want to reopen the letter. Keep it somewhere safe and only
reopen it on the intended date.
Task 2: Creative writing: Story Starter. Each week we will give you a different
starter – all you have to do is finish the story! I’m so excited to see what
different stories you come up with! There are no rules with this, be as creative
as you like – but don’t forget about the WILF! Have a good think about what
makes a piece of writing excellent. This week’s starter…
Three of us. We were the only ones left, the only ones to make it to the
island.
WILF (What I’m
Looking For) Examples/Explanations
Fronted
adverbials
Use these at the start of your sentences to give more information. E.g.
• One sunny day,
• Later that afternoon,
• As I was running,
• When the moon was bright,
2A sentences
2 adjectives come before the noun
• The white, fluffy cat
• The beautiful, talented dancer
Sandwich
Sentences
Put extra information in the middle of your sentence using brackets.
• The old lady (who lived by herself) was feeling particularly lonely today.
Metaphors/Similes
Use these to compare objects/people to things they are not.
• She was as fast as a racing car.
• The snow was a blanket on the grass.
3ed openers,
Use 3 words that end with and “ed” to start your sentence.
• Abandoned, terrified and exhausted, I knocked on the old, rickety door.
Here are some examples of our poems, film narratives and "finish the story". A
big well done to Luke, Sean, Lewis and Faridah!
Reading
Everyone in the juniors should now have a login for Reading Plus. Please see the
guide some of our Year 6 children have made if you are struggling to log on.
Reading-Plus-Guide-for-Northcote-Parents
Task 1: Reading speed and questioning: Make sure you are reading daily on your
Reading Plus. If you have any problems or questions about Reading Plus - email
me anytime!
Although we cannot go out to different places, reading can transport us to
wherever our imagination takes us.
Task 2: Reading for pleasure: Can you create a storyboard for part of a book
you have read this week? You may want to use resources from the following
websites:
https://comicsclub.blog/blank-comics-pages/
https://comicsclub.blog/comics-worksheets/
A great poster of Gangster Granny from
Lucie!
Maths:
This week’s focus: multiplication and division mental strategies
Remember, as always these two resources are great with to help with our
multiplication tables. You can use tt rockstars and hit the button to help with
your times tables.

Multiplication warm up
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z36tyrd/articles/zwghk2p
This week in maths to carry on warming up, we are going to start by doubling
these numbers.
• Double 10 = 20
• Double 20 =
• Double 30 =
• Double 40 =
• Double 32 =
• Double 25 =
• Double 36 =
• Double 45 =
• Double 61 =
• Double 73 =
Now we are going to multiply by 4 mentally by doubling twice.
1a) 10 x 4 = 40 (Double 10 is 20. Double 20 is 40)
2a) 20 x 4 =
3a) 30 x 4 =
4a) 40 x 4 =
5a) 32 x 4 =
6a) 25 x 4 =
7a) 36 x 4 =
8a) 45 x 4 =
9a) 61 x 4 =
10a) 73 x 4 =
Task 2
To divide by 4, we halve and halve again.
Have a go at these
1. 80 ÷ 4 = 20
2. 40 ÷ 4 =
3. 60 ÷ 4 =
4. 64 ÷ 4 =
5. 84 ÷ 4 =
6. 52 ÷ 4 =
7. 68÷ 4 =
8. 120 ÷ 4 =
9. 220 ÷ 4 =
10. 500 ÷ 4 =
Challenge: work out the answers to 50÷ 4, 74 ÷ 4 and 146 ÷ 4.
What do you notice?
Task 3
A quick way to multiply by 25 is to multiply by 100 and then divide by 4. Let’s
have a look.
• 32 x 25 = 800
32 x 100 = 3200. We’ve made our answer 4 times bigger. Now we divide
this by 4.
3200 ÷ 4 = 800.
• 16 x 25 = 400
16 x 100 = 1600. We’ve made our answer 4 times bigger. Now we divide this by
4.
1600 ÷ 4 = 400.
Try these:
• 24 x 25 =
• 28 x 25 =
• 44 x 25 =
• 52 x 25 =
• 34 x 25 =
• 72 x 25 =
Task 4
Multiplying by 9. A quick way to multiply by 9 is to use our knowledge of
multiplying by 10. Let’s take a look
• 38 x 9 = 342
38 x 10 = 380. Now we need to subtract 38 as our original question was
9 lots of 38.
380 – 38 = 342.
• 49 x 9 =
49 x 10 = 490. Now we need to subtract 49 as our original question was 9
lots of 49.
490 – 49 = 441.
Now try these.
• 56 x 9 =
• 47 x 9 =
• 66 x 9 =
• 89 x 9 =
• 92 x 9 =
• 71 x 9 =
Science: earth, sun and moon
During the summer term, we are learning all about the earth, sun and moon.
By now, we should know all about the planets that orbit the sun. The correct
order is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Task 1:
Read the planet fact cards about and find out the differences between days on
the different planets.
Planets Fact Cards and the Sun
Task 2:
Look at the following graph about 6 of the planets and length of days. Can you
complete your own graph to show how long a day is on these 6 planets:
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune.
Why can’t we include Mercury and Venus on this graph?
Task 3:
Write a short paragraph describing your perfect day on earth. Remember you
only have 24 hours!
Humanities: History
This term, we would be starting to learn about the Mayans – the Mayans were an
Ancient Civilisation who lived in Central America. If you have been enjoying some
chocolate Easter eggs over the past few weeks – you can thank the Mayans
because they invented chocolate! There are lots of interesting things about the
Mayans and we can still learn about them together!
Week Three – How did the Mayans dress? What the Mayans wore, depended
on their position in society. They also used masks for different purposes.
Research into what the Mayans wore and why. Then create a poster of drawings
and explanations – you could even design your own Mayan mask!

PE
This week’s focus: communicating, collaborating and comparing
I hope everybody has been able to exercise during this time.
Task 1: Continue with your workouts that your whole family can enjoy. Think
about how Joe Wicks gets everybody your family moving. Plan your activity on a
piece of paper and then challenge them to complete it. Enjoy it and have fun!
https://m.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
Task 2: In one minute, do as many ‘take stops’ as you can. In addition to this,
teach a member of your family to master this skill. Evaluate the performance
and suggest ways that you can improve. Record how many you get and see if you
can improve daily.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vkFlgOi4diQ
Task 3: Create a fun game that you can play at home during lockdown. You can
use items that you have at home, such as: toilet rolls, rolled up socks, baskets
and paper cups. Share videos of your game including rules and send them to us
to put on the twitter page for other children to watch and play at home.
Remember to keep dancing!
Oti Mabuse is showing us how to do dance moves. Have a go at these moves!

Computing
This week’s focus - searching for useful websites.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv63d2p/articles/zt9thyc
Have a look at this guide about the best way to search on the internet. We use
the internet at school and during home learning, you have been using it to help
you with your work.
Task – using your searching skills, find three websites that you would
recommend for our topics of the Maya civilisation and earth, sun and
moon. Remember you can use dk find out as one of your websites, as we know
this has got reliable and trustworthy information.
Spanish
We will be revisiting topics that we have already done in Spanish.
Our Spanish teacher has sent us a video for some questions for you to
try. Have a go!

?usp=drive_web
This week’s focus: What is in your house? Que hay en tu casa?
Can you draw the rooms on your house and label them in Spanish. Then you can
have a go at completing the sheet.
PSHE
This week’s focus: VE Day.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749
Have a look at the newsround website and the information below to find out
more about VE Day.
Following the announcement, huge crowds, with people dressed in red, white and
blue gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London. They cheered as King
George VI and his family, including Princess Elizabeth (the current queen) and
Princess Margaret, came out onto the balcony to greet everybody. Princess
Elizabeth and her sister were allowed to leave the palace and celebrate with
crowds outside, although they had to do it secretly! The future Queen
described it as "one of the most memorable nights of my life". As 2020 marks
the 75th Anniversary of VE Day with most of us inside our homes in lockdown,
many are finding creative ways to celebrate online! With virtual street parties,
decorating homes, dressing up and baking. People are also commemorating the
event with a two minute silence.
Task 1 – Read the poem by Jack Woods, a 12 year old evacuee. Can you write a
similar poem about the events and perform it in front of your family?
Jack Woods
Task 2 – you may have been drawing rainbows to thank the NHS and placing
them in your windows. Can you draw an image of a soldier for VE Day?
RE
This week’s focus: Spirited Arts
We have a chance to enter a competition that you can complete at home. I hope
you had chance to sketch some of the art pieces last week. This week we are
going to look at some poems. Look at these examples. The first one is about
Jesus on the cross. Can you attempt to write your own poem using these titles
or create a poem of your own about Jesus or God?

Music
This week’s focus: draw a portrait and write a musical memory.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/ten-pieces-at-home/zjy3382
Have a look at this website and and find out about how to draw a picture and
link it to a piece of music about someone you love, just like Elgar did. CBBC’s
Naomi Wilkinson will guide you through the process on the website. We’d love
to see your finished artwork. As always, you can send them to my email or
tweet them to the Northcote twitter page.
