The diverse range of specialisms were showcased from fashion to theatrical costume, textiles for fashion and interiors, graphic design, advertising, conceptual and abstract art, installations, sculpture and painting, illustrations and 3D products made from glass, wire, wood, metal and ceramics, photography, animation, multi media and film. Summer Show 2012 It was a celebration of the achievements of our talented committed students. They were able to show their families, friends and guests around the exhibition. Catwalk Show In March, the college hosted its fourth catwalk show, celebrating the work of students on the A level Textiles and BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design programmes. Inspired by a wide range of themes from surfaces in natural forms and issues of recycling to the urban environment and New York city, students had created individual and unusual garments, accessories and body based pieces utilising traditional and non traditional textiles. The show was extremely successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. We were also pleased to be raising money for Moldovan Orphanages and at the end of the evening had raised several hundred pounds for the charity through ticket sales and donations. Students from across college volunteered to act as models and were treated to a hair and makeup session by MC2 in Stockton Heath. Rafal came to Priestley College from Sir Thomas Boteler High School; he enrolled onto the BTEC Extended Diploma in Graphic Design and made a significant amount of progress in all aspects of the course; even more remarkable if we take into consideration that English is his second language.

He acquired an excellent technical ability with industry standard graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and has also developed online presence in the form of galleries of his work.

Alongside his peers, this year Rafal worked on a number of live assignments; all started with an introduction from an industry professional; he and other students liaised with the clients throughout the design process and formally presented the final work. This included a new awareness campaign for the Liverpool Biennial; the production of artwork for digital media and animation company Studio Liddell; the task of producing a visual concept and page layout designs for Editor of Professional Image-Maker Magazine. Alongside of this, he was personally chosen to develop an awareness campaign to promote the cross-Warrington bursary for the Children & Young People’s Services.

WHEN O2 needed young designers to create some stylish awards they knew who to call. Priestley students were set the task earlier this year to create trophies for O2’s Think Big awards. They spent five months designing and making the trophies out of various materials including metal, wood, clay and Perspex. Andrea Marren, Priestley’s Curriculum Manager for Art and Design, said: “Originally O2 wanted eight trophies, but ended up taking 15 because they couldn’t decide which ones they liked best. They are going to use the others for staff prizes.”

Think Big is a scheme for people aged 13 to 25 who want to help make things better in their local community. O2 offers financial support to projects deemed worthy and are rewarding the best Halton-based ideas at a ceremony held at their Preston Brook headquarters. Carmel Convery, Operations Manager at O2, said: “We wanted young people to design awards for young people.

“Priestley’s students were amazing and the teachers were so open, which meant the whole experience was lovely.”Art and Design students – led by Tutor Gary Jones – were allowed to be as creative as they liked in designing the awards.Their main challenge was making them look good, but also robust enough to withstand being presented and moved around. O2 offered written feedback to students about each design and the team was so impressed they want Priestley students to design the trophies again next year. Andrea added: “This project got the students used to working to a deadline and to a brief put forward by clients. It was a great experience for them and we’d like to thank O2 for giving us the opportunity.”

Andrew Stratford has been an outstanding student throughout the 2 years he has spent at Priestley College, studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design and GCSE English. He came to Priestley College from Newman High School, in Latchford. During the second year he specialised in Illustration & Photography and has produced work to a very good standard.

Andrew has been an essential member in helping with College open evenings; in escorting prospective students around the new Art block as well as giving information about Art & Design courses. Andrew has been successful in gaining a place on the Foundation Diploma in Art & design at Priestley College where he will develop his skills further and aim to progress onto Higher Education. This year Andrew won the Attendance Prize which recognises an attendance of 95% and above, he has also won a Super Star certificate for commitment and development.

During her first year Laura-Beth studied AS English Literature, AS Textiles and the Extended Diploma in Art & Design. Laura achieved very good grades in her first year and chose to continue with Textiles to A2 and her Extended Diploma Textiles/Fashion pathway in year 2.

Laura was initially interested in Textile Design for interiors but as she gained more confidence developed her passion for using fabrics into fashion (costume design). Laura not only gained confidence in her second year but her authentic commitment, determination and skill advanced to a very high level. After extensive research Laura decided to apply for Fashion Design with promotion. Laura’s prolific work rate, her passion and enthusiasm went from strength to strength – resulting in an excellent profile of grades D* D* D* a place at Leeds College of Art & Design to study fashion promotion and one of the most highly developed and original Final Major project exhibitions every displayed at Priestley College.Laura also gained a grade A in her A level Textiles. She has found time to help at the Catwalk Show as a Department Representative on Open Evenings and at meetings.

Kathleen made fantastic progress in the second year of her BTEC Extended Diploma Art & Design course. She chose to follow a Fine Art pathway to extend her skill base in a range of media and to develop her work on a more conceptual level. She always approaches her work with absolute dedication and enthusiasm, challenging herself to get the best out of every opportunity. Knowing that she wanted to progress on to a 3D design course at university, she stretched herself by selecting quite complex 3D casting processes throughout her final project, becoming competent and capable in using them. Kathleen has progressed on to the Three Dimensional Design degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Since starting at Priestley in 2010, Charlotte impressed tutors with her enthusiasm and motivation. In her first year at Priestley, Charlotte studied five subjects including both AS textiles and AS Photography and continued four of those subjects to A2. A very creative individual, Charlotte consistently produced work of an exceptionally high standard in A level textiles, achieving an A in AS textiles.

Charlotte had previously been a student at Lymm High School. Although she did not know many people when she started at the college, Charlotte quickly settled into college life, forming many firm friendships throughout her time at Priestley, particularly within her subject classes. Having decided to study for a degree in Fashion Buying and Merchandising, she applied and accepted a place at the London College of Fashion. She found the interviews challenging but received very positive feedback with one university tutor telling her that she had given the best interview seen in seven years.
