GORSUCH SUMMER SESSION IN PADUA, ITALY JULY 22 – AUGUST 2, 2019 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS The National Security Institute at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School is hosting its second annual overseas summer program in Padua, Italy. The program will take place July 22 – August 2, 2019 and will feature courses taught by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch of the United States Supreme Court and Professor Jamil N. Jaer. Students will learn about the historical roots and the modern application of the separation of powers in the national security context in two courses awarding a total of 2 credits: Interbranch Conicts in National Security: War, Intelligence, and Negotiations Separation of Powers Both courses will be team taught by Justice Gorsuch and Professor Jaer. The separation of powers course will examine the philosophical doctrines underlying the American approach to our system of governance, the constitutional pedigree of the separation of powers, and the understanding of such separation by the framers, as well the application of separation of powers principles in the modern era, including in the administrative state and national security contexts. The interbranch conicts course will analyze three-to-four case studies of conicts between Congress and the President in national security, including disputes over war-making, surveillance and other counterterrorism eorts, and international agreements. Estimated non-tuition costs are approximately $3,360, which includes the cost of round-trip airfare, transportation to and from the airport, daily meals, and single-occupancy lodging. In addition, tuition costs are $1,796.5 (in-state) or $2,895.6 (out-of-state). Discretionary travel, lodging, shopping, and other incidental expenses are not included. Enrollment is open to Scalia Law �rst- and second-year students in both the full-time and evening programs, as well as third-year eveningstudents. The program is capped at 25 students, who will be admitted on a merit basis. NSI is also able to provide a number of merit-basedscholarships to help students with tuition assistance, as well as to supplement travel and other expenses.
