WILL THIS COST MY PROGRAM ANYTHING?

The food and delivery are free. All that is required is prompt return of a weekly paperwork.

WHAT PAPERWORK IS INVOLVED?

NDS requires that you keep track of the number of meals delivered to your program, how many children were in

attendance & how many children ate each day. NDS staff will pick up these reports from your location the following week.

WHAT COOKING IS INVOLVED?

None. All meals are delivered “ready to eat.” No preparation is required. Breakfast and snack items are served according

to the menu. Lunch arrives in its own box along with a carton of milk (one per child).

DOES MY PROGRAM NEED KITCHEN EQUIPMENT?

If you serve lunch and snack, you do not need any equipment. Ice can be delivered to keep these meals cold. If you serve breakfast, you will need enough refrigeration to hold the cold items overnight. Sites without refrigeration should have

coolers to keep the meals cold.

THE MENU OFFERS DELI SANDWICHES. DO ANY OF THEM CONTAIN PORK?

No. All sandwiches with deli meats are made from non-pork products (turkey, beef or chicken).

WHAT DO I DO IF A CHILD DOESN’T LIKE AN ITEM?

If a child doesn’t like an item in his or her meal, unopened packages can be placed on a “share table” for another child to

eat.

HOW DO THE MEALS GET TO MY PROGRAM?

Delivery trucks will bring the meals to your program’s location everyday before lunchtime. Each day you will receive lunch

and snack for today or lunch for today and breakfast for tomorrow.

MOST FEDERAL PROGRAMS HAVE OVERSIGHT. WHAT CAN I EXPECT WITH THIS PROGRAM?

Monitors from NDS will visit your program during your meal service at least once during the summer and will return as needed. In addition, the County Health Department, the USDA, or the PA Department of Education may visit your program. All of these monitors are looking at your summer meal service and the environment in which the children are

eating.

MY PROGRAM SERVES MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY DISABLED YOUNG ADULTS WHO ARE OVER 18. CAN MY PROGRAM RECEIVE MEALS?

Yes, your program can receive meals for mentally and physically disabled young adults who are still enrolled in school. They may be served meals until they are 21 years old. NDS needs to be notified in advance if you are serving disabled

young adults.

DOES MY PROGRAM HAVE TO BE AN “OFFICIAL CAMP OR DAY CARE?”

No, but it does have to be located in an official setting (i.e. church, fire hall, community room, a designated outdoor area,

etc.). Many summer food service programs are located in non-traditional settings, such as WIC offices, libraries, apartment and townhouse community rooms, Family Service Centers, convents, environmental centers, Welfare to Work Programs, colleges, or theaters. Some programs are started by community leaders - like ladies auxiliary groups or block captains - who see children in need and take action by setting up tot lots or play areas that provide meals.

MY PROGRAM IS HELD IN THE EVENING, CAN WE RECEIVE MEALS?

Yes, we can provide meals to evening programs. Supper is the same meal as lunch. Sites that

receive supper may also receive snacks if time permits.

MY PROGRAM HAS A SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAM, CAN WE RECEIVE MEALS FOR IT?

NDS sponsors several other child nutrition programs during the school year that your program may be able to access. Meals are available for free or at a reduced price for child care centers and schools. For after school enrichment programs, NDS can provide snack, hot supper or cold supper at no cost for all enrolled children at eligible locations. Please contact NDS for more information about these

exciting opportunities.

WHAT HISTORY DOES NDS HAVE SERVING THE COMMUNITY?

NDS is an office of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Catholic Human Services. NDS has served the community’s food needs for over 40 years partnering with Catholic and non-Catholic programs alike. In fiscal year 2014 NDS helped community groups serve over seven million meals in our child nutrition programs and collected the equivalent of over two million meals through the Community Food Program. In the summer of 2014, more than 400 programs participated in the NDS Summer Meals for Children Program, serving nearly

800,000 meals. NDS also plays an active role in anti-hunger activities in the community.
