Introduction

This pack contains tasks to be completed over the summer break. There are tasks to help you to consolidate your Year 10 learning, and pre-learning tasks to support you to get a much-needed head-start in Year 11.

Completing these tasks will help you to feel more prepared, and therefore more confident, in September.

We want you to enjoy the summer but also not forget all the hard work you have completed in Year 10.

You should pass any completed work to your new subject teachers in the first week back. Your reward will be feeling better and stronger in lessons.

Maths

What key learning do I need to revise?

In school since we returned, we have been targeting skills which are worth the most marks on your GCSE paper next summer. If you can master these skills, which you will have seen over the past few weeks, you will start in September ready to have success next summer. Each skill is linked to a Bitesize page, but you also have Mathswatch that you can use to revise each topic. Just search for the key word on the Videos page.

How can I get a head-start?

Once you have mastered the key skills, you need to spot the skills in a range of GCSE questions. Unfortunately, if you cannot spot what the question is asking you to do, you cannot get the marks, even if you are really confident on a given topic. To help you with this, we have produced a number of “Walking Talking Mocks” which are available on the Maths section of the VLE. These work as follows. You load up the exam paper, and you load up the video which corresponds to the exam paper. Either Mr Caine or Miss Simons, will talk you through exactly how to answer every question on the paper… only they will do it with slightly different numbers to the ones that you see! Once you have watched them do the question, try it yourself, and check your answer and working out against the mark scheme. If you want to do extra practice papers independently, use www.onmaths.com

Drama

What key learning do I need to revise?

When you return to Drama in Year 11, it’s really important that you have spent some time re-capping the work we completed during Year 10. To help you do this there are several lessons and resources on the VLE to support you.

1. An Inspector Calls

To start with, you should aim to watch all of the online video lessons that teach you how to approach your examination. There are several exam papers saved in the ‘Summer Learning’ folder on the VLE that will help you to practice the skills you learn in each video. Remember, even when you have done one or two, each paper is different, and you should keep practicing your skills to get to know the play and improve your marks.

You should also aim to design a set for your production, costumes for each character and consider lighting, sound and props. The video lessons share lots of ideas, so make notes on anything you like, just be sure to adapt them to fit your own performance.

2. Section B – Theatre Review Task

You can use the Login details that have been shared with you to access the online National Theatre Collection – here I would advise that you watch the performances outlined below and attempt the review questions, saved on the VLE, for each one.

Recommended performances:

- Treasure Island - Romeo and Juliet - Macbeth

How can I get a head start?

1. Start by familiarising yourself with your Component 2 set text- this will have been shared with you already- you should read the text and ensure you are confident with the plot, characters and themes of the play.

2. Consider the words, ‘Fairytale and Imagination’- what do they mean to you? Complete some research into these words, find images, video clips, songs, poetry or other forms of communicating your understanding about these ideas. You might like to create a mood board or poster to reflect your findings.

the power point need to be completed.

2. To complete flash card/table on warm and cool down key components and benefits, their

function and an example of how it would be performed in a session This will help with recall on

knowledge for longer answer questions - Plan your own session warm up, cool down and main

body of work with activities for your chosen practical sport.

Examples- Key components -i.e.

• pulse raising, i.e. exercises that slowly increase heart rate and body temperature • mobility, i.e. exercises that take the joints through their full range of movement (ROM) • dynamic movements (e.g. change of speed and direction) • stretching (e.g. developmental stretches, dynamic stretches linked to sport – ‘open and close the gate’ groin walk) • skill rehearsal phase, i.e. rehearsing common movement patterns and skills which will be used in the activity • Conditioned game linking to aim of session • Cool down - Pulse lowering, i.e. exercises which gradually lower heart rate and reduce temperature • Stretching

3. To learn/ revise how bad posture can cause injury, the injuries and their signs and symptoms and

how it effects activity. Use the table format to help with recall and think back to practical sessions

a) Media coverage

b) Social acceptability

c) Success of professional tennis players

4. Futsal is a version of football, played mainly indoors between teams of five players. A

smaller. Less bouncy ball is used than in association football. Games are in two 30 minute

halves. Give three reasons why Futsal might be growing in popularity in the UK

Reason 1 –

Reason 2 –

Reason 3 –

5. Complete the potential barriers for the following person

Gareth Eaton

DOB 01-03-86

Family – lives with girlfriend, no children

Lifestyle info – unemployed, wants to take part in ‘urban’ activities rather than traditional

sports.

Potential barriers (using PEE statements)

How can I get a head-start?

You should now start to watch the recorded lessons for the Unit RO52 on the VLE

You need to create a document on the following;

• 10 rules and regulations for a Badminton

• 10 rules and regulations for a team sport e.g Football, Rugby, Basketball.

Dance

What key learning do I need to complete?

All pupils have started their component 1 assessment - a research journal, based on three dance works. All

pupils should have this document which they should be adding to. Resources on each dance work are

available on the VLE.

Dance works:

Ghost dances – Christopher Bruce, Emancipation of Expressionism – H20 Sandy and A Linha Curve –

Itzik Galili

What should be included in the research journal?

1. Pupils should have completed the overview of each dance work – which consists of a write up and

picture of the dance work.

2. Research each choreographers back ground, influences and described the dance styles they use and

provide examples from the dance works. 3. Analyse the costumes, lighting and set design for each dance work and stated how they contribute

to the over work providing examples from sections of each work. E.g adds colour, creates flow,

demonstrates social status, geographical setting. 4. Complete a tick / cross sheets of the purpose of each dance work.

How can I get a head-start?

Pupils should start to complete next section of the assessment.

Pupils need to brainstorm on the following points below, (these notes are evidence towards their

assessment):

• What is the role of a dancer?

• What are the responsibilities’ of a dancer?

• What is the role of a choreographer?

• What responsibilities does a choreographer have?

Once they have completed the brainstorm, they need to apply the information into an extended style question, giving examples from the 3 dance works. Using the PEE format to answer the above.

Example:

When a choreographer is creating a dance work, they have to know how to select and explore

movement ideas and be able to identify if movements don’t compliment the original theme/

stimulus. They need to demonstrate motivation, positivity and endurance to enable dancers to stay

positive and engaged within the piece. When Kenrick was choreographing Emancipation of

Expressionism he allowed his dancers to choreograph sections and he selected the movement

phrases he liked the most. This allowed the dancers to express themselves, demonstrating their skill

level and allowing them to display creatively. We see this in section 2 –Growth and struggle.
