Valby Summer Jazz 2012 presents an exclusive selection of the best European and American jazz names as well as late-night concerts with famous Danish rappers, DJ’s and jazz musicians.

The festival has within a few years established itself as one of Northern Europe’s most distinguished jazz festivals with concerts of the highest international level. Musicians meet in unique and completely new ensembles with the aim to re-invent jazz and the way jazz emerges with other artistic genres.

The virtuous saxophonist and composer Benjamin Koppel (DK) and the prominent piano player Kenny Werner (US) are music directors of Valby Summer Jazz.

A tribute concert celebrating Anders Koppel’s 50 years of amazing musicianship performing the highly acclaimed album “Everything is Subject to Change” (2012) live. The founding tone of the music is poetic and deep and portraits a man full of life experience – a true master of the Hammond organ’s versatility. Koppel-Andersen-Koppel have worked together for 20 years and here they collaborate with master pianist Kenny Werner.

Koppel-Andersen-Koppel have released the following CDs, “Kakophonia” (1999) and “Katalogue” (2003) on Cowbell Music as well as “Everything is Subject to Change” (2012).

A rare live performance of the 2008 recording “The Poetic Principle” featuring Czech bass icon Miroslav Vitous (co-founder of the legendary fusion group Weather Report) in a combined original and new band constellation.

Kenny Werner’s collaboration with Benjamin Koppel goes back to when Werner heard the melodic and intense album inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s essay “The Poetic Principle”. According to Werner it was “the best jazz album I’ve heard in a decade.” Now he joins the group on stage performing the music, which the Danish music magazine Gaffa voted “one of the top five best Danish albums of the year.”

Tomorrow’s jazz star, the 25 year old American guitarist Julian Lage is already performing regularly with legends such as Gary Burton and was recently on stage at the Blue Note in New York with Jim Hall.

At Valby Summer Jazz Lage teams up with Kenny Werner, Benjamin Koppel, master percussionst Mantilla Tupac and solo cellist at the Danish National Symphony Orchestra Henrik Dam Thomsen. Together they explore the borderland between jazz and classical music.

Brian Blade is one of the world´s most renowned jazz drummers. He used to be a regular member of Herbie Hancock’s band and has performed with Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Wayne Shorter, Seal, Bill Frisell and Emmylou Harris to name a few. Together with his permanent ensemble, “The Fellowship Band”, he has released three highly acclaimed albums.

Marie Carmen Koppel, soul queen of Denmark, presents the repertoire from her American CD, Brooklyn Jazz Session (2011). Having mastered soul and gospel for more than 20 years, she turned to jazz in 2010 and went to New York with her own lyrics and music composed by her brother Benjamin Koppel, Kenny Werner and Chris Potter, and recorded a milestone in her already amazing career. The 84-year-old Lee Konitz is one of the most distinguished representatives of postwar modern jazz, “cool jazz”. His alto sax can be heard on the release “Birth of The Cool” from 1949 by Miles Davis.

This year Valby Summer Jazz has set up a true summit meeting between the cool Konitz and the playful Koppel; instrumental colleagues exploring and developing jazz across generations. They are well supported by Kenny Werner, Scott Colley and Johnathan Blake.

Kenny Werner presents an all star team with four young jazz stars: Avishai Cohen, trumpeter and one of the most important voices on the New York jazz scene and winner of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.

Omer Avital, bassist, equally virtuous on guitar – a true poet on his double bass.

Johnathan Blake, one of the most in-demand and successful young American drummers and a permanent band member with legends like Kenny Barron and Tom Harrell’s groups.

And to complete the setup, the Danish musician, composer and saxophone virtuoso Benjamin Koppel, who has 40 CDs to his name and recently was appointed Knight of the Arts of the French Republic.
