This poignant comedy which won the 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy is now revived by theatre veter-ans of comedy: DUCKbrothers Producktions. Three French veterans live in a home for old soldiers and pass their time grumbling, dreaming about young women and arguing over whether a statue of a dog is alive. “One of the great theatrical innovators of our time” (The Telegraph), Heiner Goebbels is one of the world’s most sought after composers and creative artists. Drawing inspiration from everyday pop motifs, the expansiveness of orchestral music and utilising unusual and invented instruments, Walden creates a unique sound world befitting texts by 19th century writer Henry David Thoreau, creating an hour-long work full of evocative sound, theatre, and rich imagery.

Walden is part of the UK-wide London 2012 Festival (the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad), which runs from 21 June to 9 September and features leading artists from around the world.

The Destroyers

A collection of rogues and misfits from the Birmingham Conservatoire, conceived in 2006 at the legendary Balkan Basement jam sessions in Moseley. The Destroyers quickly burst free from the confines of the ‘Balkan Brass’ genre and emerged as an anarchic orchestra of blaz-ing passion and breathtaking originality. Front-ed by songwriter/beat-poet Paul Murphy they tell modern tales of acute relevance - tales of love, death, humour, chaos and catastrophe.

mac birmingham will be alive with films, talks, music and performances throughout the day, that amplify Henry Thoreau’s aim to ‘live deep and suck out all the marrow of life’. His message of simple living and self-sufficiency inspired the ecology movement.

Join us for a trail style performance where children under 10 and their families will rediscover the public spaces of mac birmingham and natural surroundings of Cannon Hill Park. Using storytelling, performance and play they will meet a host of terribly topsy turvy fairytale characters, who will enlist their help in an adventure through magical woodland, both ordinary and extraordinary. Places are limited on the trails so you’re advised to book in advance!

mac birmingham presents a major solo exhibition of animated works by London-based sculptor Tom Price. With an interest in the minutiae of body language and facial expression, Price crafts and animates a series of clay models which are projected as colossal blinking heads gazing directly past the viewer.

The exhibition features an accompanyingpublication available to purchase from Sales and Information. Join us at a publication launch event on Tuesday 27 May, 6-8pm. Refreshments provided.

Set in a white, digitally animated environment, I Infinite is an interactive installation inspired by the digital world’s quest to re-create life: graphic patterns slice through the space, glowing cubes fracture into a myriad of miniscule squares and pools of light hover in the air like oil on water.

An immersive dance experience in which the audience is free to roam. The captivating imagery and refined movement draw you within centimetres of our performer who moves between robotic isolation and liquid fluidity. KOSUGE1-16: THE PLAYMAKERS

For their first UK exhibition, Japanese artists, KOSUGE1-16 will create a playful installation at mac birmingham, leading from the ground floor to the first floor gallery space. This family friendly work will draw on mac birmingham’s history as both an arts and sports centre, and as a theatre for experimental puppetry. Part sculpture, part puppet THE PLAYMAKERS will be produced with local children to present an artwork activated by its audience.

KOSUGE1-16 is comprised of artists Chishino Kurumada and Takashi Tsuchiya. They will be in residence throughout June during which time they will work with local children to make components of the exhibition.

Birmingham artist, Mahtab Hussain, has spent three years photo-graphing his own community, exploring the important relationship between identity and masculinity.
