Summer Food 4 Kids Sponsored by
The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri
A program of the Missouri Dept. of Health & Senior Services
What is SFSP? (aka Summer Food 4
Kids)• The SFSP is a summer lunch program that is
sponsored by The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, and funded by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
• Intended for children 18 and under• Lunch sites are eligible for this program by being:
– A school attendance areas that serve at least 50% of their students on the Free & Reduced Lunch program.
– A low income area, determined by Census information
• Lunches are served free to all attendees.
Who can eat at a Food 4 Kids lunch site?
• Any child 18 and under.– Children do not need to be
accompanied by an adult to attend.– Adults may eat for free at the end of
the meal service, if there are leftover meals.
When & where will lunches be served?
• Food 4 Kids will serve lunches from July 6- Aug 14.
• Meal Service times are from noon- 1:00, Monday- Friday. – Bear Creek Park – Oakland Park- Shelter #3 – Indian Hills Park – Fire Station #1 – Again Street ParkLunch may not be served before noon and not after 1:00.
Timeline- Set Up
– A TFB staff person will deliver meals/supplies to lunch sites and act as the site supervisor.
– The following items will be delivered to each site…
• 2 coolers of cold lunch items (sandwiches, milk)
• Boxes of dry lunch items (apples, granola bars, napkins, etc)
• Sandwich board, meal count sheets, hand sanitizer, bleach wipes for tables, thermometers, etc
• Activities for kids (balls, crayons, games, etc)Volunteers may arrive at the sites between 11:30-12:00.
Setting Up Your Site
• Site Supervisors will hang F4K banners with bungee cords at each park shelter in a visible location.
• Coolers/boxes of dry goods will be set out on tables.
• Activity tote will be available for kids to use.– Volunteers should be engaging in these
activities with the children.• Volunteer sign-in sheet/pen set out
– Please be sure to sign in & out!• Meal Count sheet/pen ready to go.• Cooler temps recorded right before
noon.
Daily Operations
• Volunteers must ensure that cold lunch items are eaten on site. This is a program requirement.– Sandwiches, milk & cut produce
must be eaten on site.– Uncut, whole fruit/veggies and
snacks may be taken home.– A non-perishable food policy will be
posted at each site on a sign board.
Meal Pattern Guidelines
• In order for meals to meet the State’s guidelines, volunteers must serve each child:– A sandwich AND at least one of the
following…• Milk• One variety of produce (out of the 2 varieties
offered)
– Children may take all of these components if they like. The sandwich and one other nutritious item is the minimum requirement.
• All available meals will consist of:– A sandwich- meets the grain and meat/meat
alternative components.– 2 types of fruit/veggie- meets the fruit/veg
component– 1 carton of milk- meets the dairy component
Meal pattern guidelines continued….
• Snacks are considered “extras” and are not taken into consideration when meeting the Meal Pattern guideline.
• PBJ & bread will be available for children that can not eat ham due to religious reasons only.
• Children may have a 2nd meal if they like.
– 2nd meals will also be counted on the meal count sheet.
What to do with Leftovers?
• After all children have eaten…– Adults that come with children can
eat on site and be counted on the meal count sheet.
– After adults eat, remaining leftover meals will be donated to Central Pantry.
Daily Paperwork
• Meal Count Sheets– Meals must be tallied on the Meal Count Sheet as they are
served to each child.
– A sandwich AND one other nutritious item must be served for a meal to be counted.
• If a child takes an additional item (like an apple or granola bar), but not a full meal, do not count it.
– Parents that eat may be counted under the “Non-Program Adult” section of the meal count sheet.
– Site Supervisors will be responsible for filling out meal count sheets.
Items to be posted daily
• Each site will have a sandwich board with attached items that must be displayed daily…– Dated Menu– Non-discriminatory Statement- Civil Rights
• We do not discriminate towards any person regardless of age, race, gender, culture, etc

Food 4 Kids Non-Perishable Food Policy
All perishable food items MUST be eaten at the specified feeding site. This
includes meat & cheese sandwiches, milk and any other item that may risk
sickness if not held & eaten at a proper temperature.
The Food Bank will allow non-perishable items to be taken from the site for consumption at home. This includes
shelf stable fruit, cookies, granola bars, other snacks, etc.

Volunteer Training
• Volunteers may taken online training or be trained on-site by a Site Supervisor. – Everyone handling meals or counting
meals MUST be trained.– All trained volunteers must sign
documentation that they have been trained.
– Signed training sheets must be kept on site.
Timeline- Clean Up
• Meal Service will end at 1:00 sharp.• All volunteers must sign in/out.• Banner and all supplies will be returned to
TFB daily.• Count leftover meals. Site supervisor will
return meals to TFB for donation to Central Pantry.
Incentives!!!
– Each site will have a plastic tote full of activities that the kids can play with after they eat.
• Volunteers are encouraged to use these items to interact with the kids.
– Each site will have 80 pool passes to hand out.
• TFB staff will stop by all the sites regularly throughout the length of the program to pass out pool passes.
Site Monitoring
• Each site will be monitored by TFB staff during the 1st & 4th weeks of operation.
• Each site will also be monitored by:– MDHSS, who will also audit the program
– Boone County Health Department, for food safety standards
– Monitorings will be unannounced ahead of time
– Monitors will determine if all program guidelines are being met
Special Conditions
• National Weather Service Heat Advisory– IF the NWS issues a heat advisory, kids
can pick up a meal for themselves and take it home.
• This is only permissible IF the NWS issues an advisory for that day.
• Children can not take additional meals with them.
– Site supervisor must stay for entire hour.• Inclement Weather
– Sites may close for the day due to severe weather. A “Closed” sign must be posted.
Promote your site!!
• Volunteers may bring their kids to eat lunch
• Invite children from your groups, friends, neighbors, churches, etc to attend
• Talk us up on your social media sites
