Academy of Engineering

Rockets and Robotics – Mr. Chestnut This exciting hands-on engineering class uses engineering simulations. Students will learn the basics of engineering and simple machines. Students will be introduced to the concepts of pulleys, levers, gears and more. From this foundation, students move on to compound machines and motorized vehicles and robotic creations. Students also get a chance to put their new knowledge to work creating their own mechanized designs. Students will creatively solve challenges using concepts learned in class. Last, but not least, you will get the chance to become inventors. Light and sound sensors, pulleys, wheels, levers, and gears are all at your command.

Race Engineering—Mr. Kahan You can look at a lot of life’s challenges as an optimization problem. One is too little. One is too much. One is just right. Sound familiar? Goldilocks encountered the same scenario so these challenges are often called Goldilocks problems. After the students become certified as radio controlled (RC) racecar drivers and mechanics, students will learn that the best way to find the ‘just right’ is through mathematical modeling. Seriously!

There are over 14 million ways to set up these 1:10 scale racecars. Through multiple investigation activities, we’ll finish with an understanding of how to choose a good, even a great set up, from these 14 million options. We will then use the RC cars to find out just how ‘fast’ is fast.

Food Engineering—Mr. Stires Are you sick of hearing, “Don’t play with your food?” Well, for one week you will get to explore how scientists and engineers play with food to create new items. Extract the DNA from plants. Sacrifice a gummy bear in the name of science. Learn about aquapon-ics and much more! Come and join us and learn how the science of food can be fascinating!
